Today I started the Grim Reaper prompt from the October challenge that I posted on my discord. I used references from the amazing Max Grecke as inspiration for the rendering. But as I started rendering I noticed how horrible this drawing was coming together. I would think I must trust the process and kept going but the anatomy of my base drawing was not strong, I did not block out the colours – I used my typical method of loosely sketching in the colours before layering on top. I soon found out that this technique was definitely not the right one for the look I was going for. I got really frustrated and gave up so I started a simpler portrait drawing in black-and-white to study how Max applies colour to create really unique lighting scenarios, volume, caricature, and mood. I think this black and white drawing is so far successful and I feel like I’m already learning a lot from doing it. I hope that after this drawing I can restart the Grim Reaper prompt and create something closer to my vision.
Have you ever started a drawing and realized you needed to go back to basics before tackling a new technique?
