Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE ep.5 | REACTION!!!

The Manon storyline was really interesting to me because I feel like she was used as a marketing tactic. If I’m honest, the only reason I know about Katseye is because my TikTok fyp was FILLED with vids about the Manon drama and different think pieces. A lot of reality/competition shows in the west are packed with drama and fights and I think the show understood that in order to gain the public’s attention, they would need something like that. I mean, this whole episode was practically dedicated to Manon, and this (a long with the next episode) one was probably the most talked about part of the show. I’ve also heard that people don’t think that Manon should’ve been put in the group because she’s not as talented as the other members/other contestants were better dancers and vocalist. I have a few thoughts on that. 1. It’s interesting that people think this when some of the most popular people in kpop are the visuals (not the main vocalists or main dancers) (ex: cha eun woo….pls don’t kill me I love him). Those visuals are the ones who bring a lot of attention to their group. 2. Personality matters. I know that this show lowkey glossed over the girl’s personality (they had a lot of material to cover so I get it), but they had to know which girls could make some viral moments. I hate to say it y’all….but Manon is funnyyyyy…the Manon-Lara combo is undefeated. Like, she’s recreated vines and she’s good at doing lives, so the producers had to recognize that at some point. Just because the other girls had more vocal/dance talent doesn’t mean that they could realistically contribute to the groups success. May favorite example of this is Little Mix. They are 10/10 singers, dancers, and performers. But I always felt like they were missing a “center”. Destiny’s child had Beyoncé, one direction had Harry Styles, and the Jackson 5 had Michael Jackson. All these groups are amazing in their own right, and all of the group members are talented, but that one “center” person that attracted people made a big difference in their long-term success, and I think the Katseye producers felt that they found that person in Manon.

2024-10-19 05:06:18 +0000 UTCAs someone who watched dream academy in real time before this show came out, I think fans would’ve voted pretty differently if they saw this content at that time. When fan voting was happening, we really only saw the performances. I have a completely different opinion about some of the girls after watching this show. I think it was done purposely with the intent being for fans to vote based purely off of talent or star quality without being attached to certain girls because of their personality.

2024-10-19 03:55:38 +0000 UTCI do believe the voting would have turned out differently if the fans had seen this documentary before the survival show. I wasn't there last year but watched the survival show when this documentary came out (before seeing the final lineup) and without knowing any of the girl's personalities or work ethics or anything about them really (apart from their nationalities and ages ig) I get why the voting turned out this way. I remember that Adela while being really good didn't catch my eyes much more than the other contestants and Manon did sing quite well and paired with her looks and most importantly the representation that came with her being black I get why a lot of people voted for her. On another note I think it is important to see both sides of the story. while I do get the girls' frustration and I know if I was in there place I would probably also be taking shit about her out of frustration lmao but as an onlooker from the outside I understand that Manon did not do that because she's arrogant or a diva or thinks she's better than the others but more because of the anxiety that comes with the whole thing. She's was new to this whole thing and keep in mind that she did not know nothing about kpop before it so she wouldn't have known how strict and disciplined you have to be for training life. And I definitely know that feeling of procrastinating and distancing/detaching yourself from something that gives you anxiety. And it might also be a cultural difference! I'm from Germany and I know that caring for your mental health is taking very seriously and it's not uncommon for someone to call in sick if you're not feeling that great mentally.

2024-10-18 21:18:32 +0000 UTCThis is so true. I do not condone her behaviour but she was lied to. She was promised training and development but was sent in to a reality show and with people who have more experience with kpop. Even the girls that didn't know kpop, wanted to sing and dance or followed pop or other type of music genre. Manon was more of a visual, model, fashion girl. I actually give her props for learning quickly. I also watched the show as it was airing and I liked her low tone. It's expected for women to sing so high. Apparently, Swiss people are known for people taking breaks if needed, they prioritise rest, family and mental health from what I read and hear. Australia does the same too and as an African who's lived in Australia for so long, I think this mentality makes people from these countries complacent and they come across as lazy. All that being said, Manon placing 4th was not a good thing for everyone. She became the main target for all the trainees shots and they all wanted to dump their anger on her, which wasn't nice either. I also felt sad for manon when Sophia talked about their one to one conversation in a group setting, when manon wasn't there. She could have kept that to herself or spoken to the therapist about it in private. Her talking about it, did more harm than good, considering she wasn't there to defend herself. Anyway, the drama... I'm here for it.

2024-10-18 13:53:20 +0000 UTCHey now Terry, not too much on my girl Manon lol I'm biased because she is my fave so I empathize with her and how she must have felt coming in to this new environment and feeling like the odd one out. Everyone's mental capacity is different and it's unfair to expect everyone to handle stress the same way. That being said, the other girls were completely valid in feeling the way they did about her not showing up to rehearsals and still scoring high in the voting. I don't agree with Manon's actions of just missing rehearsals so often especially when it affected team projects. So yeah I do not fault anyone for how they felt under these circumstances. However, ganging up on one person I do not support. It obviously got to a point where Manon could feel that everyone had a problem with her and that only made her feel even more ostracized so I wish they would have went about expressing how they felt differently before it got to that point. Also for the record, the group members have talked about overcoming this era and are all good now so don't worry lol

2024-10-18 06:33:18 +0000 UTCIt's so interesting seeing your take on the manon situation. Although I do see the girls point of view and understand them wholeheartedly, we have to remember this documentary does a good job at not showcasing everything merely for drama. Manon did mention in this episode and the previous ones, that she's dealt with extreme insecurity and unsureness since joining due to her lack of skill since she's the only one without any singing or dancing training prior to the program. She became tardy due to fear. Not only that, but HYBE/Geffen scouted HER for this opportunity through instagram, she also had no prior knowledge to the kpop world, or kpop traditions, or the trainee life. Of course this doesn't excuse her not showing up, but it's so hard for me and everyone else who has watched this documentary to NOT sympathize with her because she was swimming in unfamiliar waters., and just like you stated it does take a LOT of mental strength to be there, and that you wouldn't be able to do that, I feel like as a trainee who's being thrown into the light that quickly, we should also apply that empathy for her too. It's not about her being a diva, or not being a girls girl, but her detached attitude of the program was a result of insecurity & anxiety that I feel like you might've brushed over. She's the definition of an unpolished rookie who was mentally giving up here. oh! and I watched this show in real time last year, and I can surely say that the first voted results came from social media voting based off of nationality & ethnicity, that's why it seemed disoriented haha. Also, this documentary does such. GREAT job at not mentioning that a LOT of people during the first voting loved manon's voice alongside the others. That's my take on it lol!
