DUKE NUKEM SHOVELWARE SHOWDOWN

AND WE'RE BACK...

Man, I missed that Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project rendition of "Grabbag."

This is the "What's Civvie Playing" video that spiraled completely out of control into what you see now. Finding a copy of Duke!Zone II on my hard drive, seemingly out of nowhere, and then booting up god knows how many different levels to get footage, plus the Simply Silly connection, plus Plug 'N' Pray.

Ok, it wasn't "out of nowhere," it was part of the 2015 re-release of the Kill-a-Ton Collection. I just didn't realize this was part of it.

Snowballing from the original "here's three weird Duke episodes that somehow got released for money," I did really want to show what this crap was like back in the day.

I actually had Duke!Zone 1 as a kid and I'd have written something about that if I could find the damn CD. Instead, I scoured the Internet Archive to find the original. Also grabbed D!Zone, the Doom shovelware disc, for purely educational purposes, which amounts to "running footage of it with a midi version of Danny Elfman's "Breakfast Machine" from Pee Wee's Big Adventure." Some music demands multiple uses.

I remember using the DOS frontend to extract levels to my hard drive just to be annoyed and disappointed. Even by the standards of a 10-year-old, these products left me disappointed. The one map I remembered and made sure to include, BETAONE, was worse than I recall, and after playing it again I think I might be misremembering it.

And I threw in Plug 'N' Pray to. I mentioned it in the original script and decided to get it out of the way. These episodes are all fairly short anyway. I still have trouble imagining people playing that with a Playstation controller. And it was mid-to-late 1997, meaning a majority of them were still using the old PSOne controller without analog sticks. Truly terrifying.

DUKE NUKEM SHOVELWARE SHOWDOWN

Comments

Civvie, if you ever do another Duke Nukem 3D video, you NEED to make one on Duke Nukem: Alien Armageddon (DN:AA). You say that you don't do mods on the channel, and I respect that decision. Most mods for old FPS games are usually boring or bad maps, or cool, but uninteresting, weapon mods (unless we're talking about Half-Life, and standalone GZDOOM games don't count). But, although DN:AA is not as well-known as, say, Death Wish, I feel as if it's on the level of, or even better than that mod. People made videos on the mod when the first episode released five years ago, and it was described as "good, but needs improvement", which is fair, because it was unfinished. But, the mod is fully complete now, with all three episodes of the expansion completed, and all of the previously made maps tweaked to near perfection, and for some reason, no one is talking about it, which is a travesty. Please check it out and maybe make a video of it letting more people know it exists, because the lead developer DukeBoss, and all of the other talented modders who worked on this for over seven years, deserve praise for making one of the best, if not the best, expansion/partial conversion mods I have ever fucking played.

I remember buying D!Zone 2 from a car boot sale when I was a kid, hoping it would extend my enjoyment of the game. It was a total crock of shit. I haven't thought about it much since, but glad I'm not the only one to suffer this weird niche 90s kid experience.

Arron Thompson

You do good shit, keep er goin man.

Riley W. Andersen

Yes! the breakfast machine! Thank you, it's been so long since I've seen the movie and I just couldn't connect the link in my brain.

DJ Jester

It is a midi version of the track “Breakfast Machine” from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

Civvie

Ok this is driving me nuts. What is that song at 1:30. My brain is blanking so hard.

DJ Jester

Related to this, anyone interested in those D!Zone levels check out Spectere on YT. He's got a great ongoing series playing through those.

Lobstarooo

Coincidentally, my bathroom is also known as the D!Zone.

elegantzizi

First video as a new dungeoneer. Thanks, Civvie!

Tuxedobird

Caught a new Civvie video after prepping some Pizza Rolls, Hell yeah! Thanks Civvie, you're the best! Have you heard about Pokemon GO being a CIA asset! And also Epic has paid an elected official to attack Steam?

Shawn Grant

Thank you Civvie. I think I actually played some D Zone maps once upon a time. Christmas games time! Jazz Jackrabbit + Holiday Hare + Jazz Jackrabbit 2 as the 2024 Season Finale? How about it? :)

Tripp Andre

Duke Xtreme when Civvie?

Harry_Sach

OMG this unlocked a memory of DZone! I thought that was a dream!! Why Civvie?! Why have you done this to me?!

Midnight Fox

Thanks for putting yourself through that, Civvie! Brings back a lot of horrible memories and ennui. BETAONE was an early map by Robert Travis, eventual mapper at Sunstorm, and designer of the (IMHO slightly unfairly) maligned but similarly sprawling Smithsonian level. I think parts of BETAONE may even appear in Smithsonian. I believe his decent early map AZTEC may have also been on that disc, which ended up as part of the time travel secret level of DukeDC? You’re correct, the underwater instagib happens when the size or shape of the space above and below the water weren’t exactly identical, and you could end up getting teleported into the void outside of the map when you transition between them. Rookie error, even for these terrible levels.

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown

Civvie why would you set yourself up for a Blood: Red Hot review like that?

Erik Olsson (TerrorBlades)

I considered asking for a video on these huge map collections but told myself that the answer would probably be 'they are crap so the video would be boring'. Im glad we still got a video regardless

Oh god… how much shovel is too much shovel? I spent way too many hours fumbling with the Build engine back when I was 13 and had no internet. Never could get those damn rectangles to hinge, or to function as a door… 🥲 Just seeing the dark green base brick texture of the build engine in some of that shovel drivel is enough to remind me of the soul-crushing teen anxiety of the pre-high-school me. 😬 And yeah, true story - those damn mega-level pack CD’s were truly horrible. Learned my lesson with Doom II shovel. Never again. 😬 Oh, by the way - in case shout-outs are permitted and someone’s interested: the Voxel Duke 3D project is apparently around 50%-ish complete. Have some ’tiddies - https://youtu.be/7HXPkfdDw6Q

Crawler_00 it seems my name is missing!

Crawler00

Man, I remember finding as copy of DUKE XTREME with the t-shirt at CompUSA bundled with both DUKE!ZONE releases for pretty cheap, but, being 9-10, I didn't have enough money so I had to ask my parents for the difference. Had to haggle my ass off on what chores I was gonna do to pay it back, though, I did get away with only having to mix mud for a small patch job my dad did for our neighbors. Not fucking worth it in the end, turns out of shit PC we had didn't have enough 'oomph' to play with any of the adjustments you could do. Just toggling the extra gore caused the game to chug to the point of a full on seize.... and in typing this out I just figured out kid me paid for what was essentially a 'proto-brutal' type mod with map packs...

Duke is ALWAYS welcome!

Walt_Man

It's just what the doctor ordered—a new Civvie video. I have to work on Saturday for the week. I got my pipe lit up and glancing from video to clock, so I don't end up late to work again. While I am glad we have better ideas of what we can buy with community feedback, I miss that mystique of going to the computer game section in Walmart and staring at boxes of games I never heard of- wondering if I should buy them and try. It had that same thrill as when you're driving your car down a dark highway and you're not sure if some trash rolled into the darkness ahead or you're about to turn a possum into asphalt salsa. Thanks for the video, Civvie, and stay smoky.

Jaeger Elijah

Done!

Civvie

Oh yeah also can I make it as "Silverwootz" if it's in as anything else

Silverwootz

This is hilarious. These last 2 weeks I've been playing Duke fan made levels 😆

Steve Downes

lol, it's all right, once you've uploaded more than 100 videos it's all a blur

Civvie

You hate to look it up and see that it’s a multi part series making it even worse that I missed it. The horrors of being blind and dumb lol. I don’t know how I missed that. Will definitely check it out. Thanks for the quick response.

Cody Thacker

Can I get my name in like a Hot pink?

Silverwootz

I did do a series on the first one a while back but haven’t gotten back to it.

Civvie

Yes, it -is- educational, because I remember a long while back when Derek Stopskeletonsfromfighting did his console Duke 3D comparison video, he made some throwaway comments about the difficulty of Plug'n'Pray. At the time, though, I thought "ah, come on, how bad could it be?" but now I understand. 'Play Duke 3D like Blood' is a hell of a descriptor.

Valora Inverse

Sorry if you have been asked this a lot but have you considered playing the stalker series ? Especially with the new one coming out. I’ve always been kinda interested in the series from a distance and with the sequel coming out, I’m trying to decide if I want to play through the previous ones or just play the second one. Honestly if you were considering playing through them and making a video I would probably just wait to watch your videos on it to see if it’s something I am interested in.

Cody Thacker

As somebody who is into gaming preservation, learning about bizarre trends of gaming in the 90s/early 2000s that I was unaware of continues to fascinate me; especially when it comes to the world of hacks, bootlegs, and fan games! Here we are playing games from the "official" gaming industry, meanwhile there are endless amounts of unofficial gaming industries making games (that may feature great talent creating them) that most people will never play. Just out of curiosity, are there other companies outside of WizardWorks known for these types of "mod value packs" out there that any of you know about? I would be curious to look into these companies (as someone who likes to support game preservation organizations) as I'm sure these are mostly mom and pop operations not affiliated with regular game publishers that just dump roms onto a CD

Gaming Genres

I have bet money on duke.

Ben Landry

Done!

Civvie

I love your Duke episodes 💕

Raul Campos

Can I get my name as Bazztoner, in red please?

Bazztoner

the undeniable charm that build engine brings to the screen is good for the serotonins in the brain.

Tore Schweer

oh my god im having PTSD flashbacks... one of my friends growing up had D Zone Gold... funny story his dad was a massive nerd, a computer engineer since the 70s, had introduced us to LAN networked computers and subsequently doom/quake matches. he worked for defense contractors in the DC area, where we grew up, and went insane listening to alex jones. he lost his job and security clearance after trying to force his way into a high security area at work... he got institutionalized and while i fell of regular contact with them even before that point he's apparently doing much better now. i know this cause his wife, my friend's mom, divorced him and married a former senator from colorado where i live now and i sat next to them on a plane maybe 10 years ago funny how the brain works

gill

Magnificent day for me and a wish for the same to you Civvie and all.

G-nome

STUFF.

Civvie

Sir, another Duke video has dropped. Place your bets now - how many Randy digs can Civvie get into a Duke video?! My money is on at least two. <3

Matt 'Tycow' Wilson

Wow. I have a physical copy of Duke!ZONE 2 and I've always wondered what was on it...

Natasha

I LOVE YOU MOTHERFUCKING TREEFELNER

Civvie

Fuck yes

JOE MOTHERFUCKING TREEFELNER

Done! You'll see it in yellow in the next vid!

Civvie

Heading towards a 24 hour shift, new Civvie vid just dropped. Mighty fine, Cv. Not to be a dickhead, but if you could color "Dick Kickem" in the credits to yellow or a color of your choosing that'd be great. A bigger hassle finding my name in the credits than crankin me own hog. Cheers

Dick Kickem

Gotta love Duke episodes!

Nathaniel Dolynchuk

Oh thank God, I was going through withdrawals, also, and I know you aren't the type, but could you make merch? You got me through my last semester of college 5, going on 6 years ago, and have been faithfully watching ever since, and more than just giving back, I would like to rep your channel when I play live shows.

MacCauley Crawford

I'm getting ready for a pretty annoying day at work. I just had my morning rage shower and about to anger brush my remaining tooth stumps but now I've got something to look forward to on my break! Thanks Civ!

Suckerpunch5000

OH HELL YEAH BABY, TIME TO WATCH CIVVIE AND CHEW BUBBLEGUM

Mateusz Bartoszek

Just yesterday I was thinking about how much I enjoyed Civvie's Duke content, and wished there was more. So excited for this!

Korcks

The King has returned! Also, the Alien Armageddon mod is finally fully released! Would love to see a special episode on that now that it's fully finished (albeit being supported to flesh out any remaining bugs or map design mishaps). The final episode is INSANELY well made.

Chozo Ghost

Blood Civvie...MORE BLOOD.

fRiEnD

Oh boy, the King is back!
