PRO WOLFENSTEIN 3D

Well, for one, playing with a stupid self-imposed challenge helps. People don't realize that there are some tricks and traps in Wolf3D that are interesting to discuss. Some levels aren't just mazes. In fact, the more mazelike ones are in Spear of Destiny and moreso in the Spear of Destiny mission packs. And I was still very paranoid about this video being boring to the point that I hired the services of a certain well-known voice actor who is all over the retro fps community for a short bit that's probably the best joke in the video.
I ended up cutting a bunch of stuff out (which you'll all see next time there's a "cut content/behind the scenes" video). I took about four minutes out of this video and some of it just didn't work with the flow and some of it just wasn't all that funny or interesting. I'm hoping to get Postal 4 Wednesday up after this, followed by the April Fool's video, which I would like to get up publicly on April 1st, but we'll see how that goes. It might be slightly later. You'll understand why when you see it. It required some special attention.

2021-03-24 10:57:49 +0000 UTCReinstalled Wolf3D because of this video, and started up a mod called "Coming of the Storm" that's got interesting level designs and does a good job with atmosphere (might be a few scares involved, too). It's got new weapons and enemies. A tip: Keep an eye out for Snipers from the word "Go". Look up the port to LZWolf (an ECWolf fork) if you want to run it outside of DOS. Worth the effort in setting up.

It's janky and has less purposeful design than Doom and of the 60 levels, there are about a dozen that are truly unique and play with the limited tools. The hardest games to make videos on are the DOS trash, like Capstone games or The Varginha Incident are so bizarre that I find myself booting the game up again and again to reproduce the weirdness I experienced and trying to figure out if it's an issue with the game or the emulation. If I sound genuinely frustrated in a video, it's because I am.

My old job sucked and they laid me and my staff off during the pandemic, just to rehire us six months later in a bid to avoid paying furlough (yeah I know). As my revenge, I stood at the till playing Wolfenstein 3D for hours every day because fuck them. Honestly really liked playing that way too!

Two months ago I decided to replay Wolf 3D, doing it casually on Bring 'Em On, and for all of February I was stuck on 6-7. I played with ECWolf, I had the map to go from, but my own self-imposed challenge of no saves except at the start of a map made it a royal bitch. I beat it a week ago, but fuck 6-7. Still have a fondness for this game, the first shareware title I can remember little me playing.
