Oats instead of bread crumbs will help a meatloaf stick together but you'll need to grind the oats to a bread crumb-like texture. With all the fresh ingredients you used you've made a meatloaf which is actually superior to the typical American meatloaf. Great job, mom!

It's a fairly versatile dish, so add or omit any ingredients you like. I usually dice the onions smaller and add diced celery, Worcestershire sauce, and a little grated carrot. Sometimes I'll add dry onion soup mix. Have fun with it! Oh, and also, don't be afraid to squeeze the meat mixture while you're mixing! Get all the ingredients incorporated. That will be a fun project with Archie when he is around 3 or 4 years old. Kids love to get their hands into things!
