Usually in stories it is about the 'end relationship goal' of the main two characters fucking or maybe getting married and then having sex and then the story ends. In this story, Xerxes is raised in a cult where as adults, you're expected to have sex with pretty much every warrior you meet.
Where it could be corny that 'love is forbidden' is written here basically, I always felt it had a slight view of the sex-obsessed world from an asexual perspective, especially with Ravi's backstory. It is an erotic setting on the surface, but there are some other things to it, and Xerxes / Ravi's stories are survivor stories in a different more serious and non-voyeuristic context.
It may be a long-held secret of the gods that Strato rejected softness and embraced his tenets because someone he loved did not love him back. That was many millennia ago...
