Did a little 'get in there son' and a jump in the air when Photek sent me this message yesterday. 🤜
That video was a real turning point for me in so many ways and really kickstarted the feeling that I could make something out of this whole YouTube thing.
Photek DnB - Production Breakdown - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdbdMZqUyx8
He is without doubt one of the true great pinoneers of the genre and was so creative with his techniques back then like:
Break layering, hit variations, gating FX, reverse whip and snare FX, phasing and flanging, rolls and rattles, percussion layering and grooves, mono reverb snares & delay fx.
His 'tri-set' break chopping clip is also a classic - https://youtu.be/XdbdMZqUyx8?t=3170
Sometimes you get the feeling that your inventing some creative new trick or technique only to soon realise that someone 30 years ago was doing it even better on an old hardware sampler!
His work ethic is also something I find particularily inspiring and goes completely against the advice a lot of producers give out these days of making 3 tracks a day. It can take a lot of time and effort to make great art and music is no different.
From Keyboard (US) , nov 1997:
"Rupert's tracks are a lesson in intricacy, and he takes his sweet time realizing them. 'I work at home most of the time', he says, 'and it's best 'cause I spend such a long time on my tunes. Since the past year and a half, the pace that I work at has slowed down 'cause I spend a lot of time away from the studio just thinking about what I'm going to do next. The way I'm working at the moment...I'd say five weeks, minimum, to complete a track. And that's the reason my music sounds like it does, because I don't care how much time I'm putting into what I'm doing. That's the way I've always treated it.'
The artist breakdown series which have now covered Photek, Paradox, LTJ Bukem, Source Direct, Lemon D & Dillinja and have been so fun to make and have taught me a huge amount.
I'm definitly looking fowards to getting stuck back into more artist breakdowns this year. Maybe even a more modern DnB producer like Calibre, Marcus Intalex or Alex Perez would be dope.
As of now, I'm about to film my next video on filtering showing off how important they are as a tool and also exploring filterverse a pretty crazy and deep filter plugin thats just come out.
Big ups everyone,
George
