hand-drawn patterns depicting scales, leaves, feathers, fire, and Arabic-inspired designs for the non-comic inside pages of Ace of Beasts #1 <3
Took me a long time to do this!
Men+Monsters Vol.1 was very minimalist, true to it's tarot-like design motif, and here I wanted something different, more evocative of the design motifs in this story. Probably M+M Vol.2 (or the re-print of Vol.1 when we get there) will have more of a rococo + ancient Egyptian mix (trees representing both family and nature being very important in M+M's current chapters). I'd say 'a mix of art nouveau or art deco', seeing as they are among the most popular 'western' remix of worldly art, but webcomics have remixed poor Mucha to death and I'd rather do some different cultural representations.
I'd say that this was also Indian-inspired, but it lacks that very distinct paisley shape and the methodical circles and dots to be only from that. There are subtle yet distinct differences between various cultural patterns even where there are motifs derived from the same elements.
tl;dr art talk with aero
Anyway, expect A LOT of in-progress pages very soon, I'm inking about 12 at once, and some of it is extras that only you guys will get to see ;>
