My movie reaction to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Also, that monster Wong was fighting is Abomination from Incredible Hulk. Trevor was the fake Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Say what you will about that movie but he was like my favorite part.

I really like this movie, but it's one of those movies where the side characters are more memorable than the main hero which you can argue is a problem in an origin story. He's not wooden and dull like Captain Marvel, but there's not much about him that makes him special. He just happens to have a villain for a dad who drilled him to fight, survived a few surprise attacks, and mended his relationship with his sister. That's pretty much it. Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Thor, Black Panther, Spider-Man, even Black Widow were all different people at the end of their movies than they were at the start. They all went through arcs and learned the meaning of doing what they do. They do it because they WANT to. Shaun didn't want to do any of this, and still doesn't, he just wants to be normal but was forced into it. That doesn't seem very heroic to me. Even Captain America, whose personality, beliefs and values remained unchanged throughout SEVEN films, was still growing as a character and learning about things like responsibility, leadership, and adjusting to a new world. They started to SET UP a character arc here with him talking about killing the guy who killed his mom but they didn't explore that or fully flesh it out like the original Spider-Man. It was just kind of mentioned in passing. I still like the movie, Trevor absolutely made it for me, just Shang-Chi himself is kind of weak. He's just likable and knows how to fight.
