Daily Linux & Open Source News - S01E246 - Mozilla focuses on AI ands private ads

AI is a very helpful tool, although what is called AI today is not really AI. That said, the main thing with "AI" is I must be in control. I use local LLMs that I control, not something sending data back. It must be my choice for it to even be installed, let alone enabled. If that is how it is setup, it can be quite helpful. It is obviously not all what marketers try to make it, but it is a solid tool and we use it in my business for security logs and other summarizations.

There's no better AI integration than an opt-in plugin, it's probably good that Mozilla is going to explore more ethical ways to handle ad and AI tech, but good grief I can't help but coil and hiss at those 2 letters. Who's approval is everyone seeking by following the crowd? "AI is the future", "embrace new technologies", "AI is here to stay", and stuff an OpenAI API into every nook and cranny that has any kind of text processing. Quality, privacy, understanding, keeping human skills up, who needs that when you have hype and ✨✨✨ SPARKLES ✨✨✨. I regularly find myself wishing for weaker hardware, so we'd have to be efficient with what we have, but Moore's Law is alive and well; it doesn't matter how crappy our work is (AI expanding that scope of work from code to any info), because you can just buy a faster computer or use the new AI service next year and it'll be *easier* than knowing how to do a good job yourself. Gah... End rant.

I think a lot of AI tools are quite useful. Although not nearly as much as the over-the-top marketing suggests. And of course if those tool would be sold at cost nobody would ever use them. I still think they are here to stay. They just need to get a lot more energy efficient and people who use them need to be aware of their limitations (which is difficult when there are 100 rich, popular AI podcast bros for every well-informed tech journalist 🙈)

I'm disappointed in Mozilla, they could have gone other ways to monetize and get revenue. They could have followed what protonmail does and offer similar services, we need privacy respecting alternatives to Google workspace. And yet here we are and Mozilla thinks it's a good idea to start an ad business... Disappointing...

UsernamesAreHard

I totally agree on your rant against AI for summaries. I once watched an interview of a member of my parliament who praised himself for using AI for summaries of legal documents or planned laws. At that moment I asked myself for what I'm paying this obviously unqualified person through my taxes. It's insane! If you are interested in the documents: read them. If not, search for another job!
