People are incredibly lucky that events in the real world allowed this film to get finalized and released. Here's the big rub, especially for fans who wanted this in theaters. It never would be. Not in this form. Snyder had been directed to make a film with a max running time of 2 1/2 hours. He knew this, and he comes up with 4 plus hours of material. When he made this DVD extended cuts had basically disappeared because people weren't spending hundreds of millions buying copies of things like The Lord of the Rings extended cuts anymore. Home sales have tanked. Warners would have been forced to cut this down. He might have got an end run time of 2 3/4 hours maybe even 3 hours, but a huge amount of what's here wouldn't make a theatrical release. So a lot of backstory, and fleshing out of characters would still have got removed. The one positive, is that at least the tone of the film would still be his and be consistent through the release. If you can't make a film for the time required, you need to have that worked out in advance and have a two film release. WB was not even going to consider that option at the time. Of course fast forward s few years, streaming is the future and everyone needs content for their new streaming services, and that hits right before a pandemic that cripples the production of films and tv. So we WB has property that is almost complete, its perfect for a streaming world (where you can stop it at anytime and watch at your convenance), and not worry about losing not just one but two screenings a day at its full run time. And its something that a group of people have been vocal about wanting to get released. Its the perfect property for a the situation Warners (HBO Max) was in. And so we get very, very lucky. Snyder seems to like long form storytelling for his films lately, he might want to consider a medium better suited for it, like high quality streaming shows. There a re a couple that will spend serious money on a longer product.

Some of the things I didn't like about it were the soundtrack, the colors, their downplaying of Darkseid and less Wonderbat moments. Most of the praises of this film are definitely valid. Cyborg and Flash are MUCH better. Stephenwolf was better, the action was better, and they expanded on the lore properly. I still have a soft spot for the first one, and I kind of wish I could cut these two together to make my ideal JL film.
