I don't think there's an inherent problem with having a code of conduct. I think there are often problems with how they're enforced (nearly always punitive instead of conciliatory) and even how they're written (sometimes throwing in necessary affirmation of certain beliefs which good people may consider to be incorrect). I think the GNU Project's Kind Communication Guidelines and even SQLite's Code of Ethics are a decent model for a code of conduct. It essentially boils down to "don't be an asshole, and if you do these other nice things people will generally like you more". I think Β§3 clause eight of the SQLite Code of Ethics (as a trivial example) is a pretty good starting point: "Honor all people". Β§2.1 (Scope of Application) makes explicitly clear that "No one is required to follow The Rule, to know The Rule, or even to think that The Rule is a good idea. The Founder of SQLite believes that anyone who follows The Rule will live a happier and more productive life, but individuals are free to dispute or ignore that advice if they wish." ("The Rule" is referring to Β§3) As a matter of fact, the only things I can disagree in The Rule are clauses fifty-four and fifty-five (because they were poorly translated from the original; that part of The Rule was written against the epicureans and hedonists who ultimately pursued pleasure above all else--even at the ultimate detriment of others. The way it's typically translated is "laughter", which is... somewhat understated.)

Yep, people seem to attach to certain words and attribute really bad meanings to them, without even looking things up

Yeah, having a broken voice really sucks when your entire job is standing in front of a mic :D

Sorry you're still fighting that bug. Hope you can scare it off soon. We're better off without the ultimate filesystem if the developer can't work as a team member. Who knows what would happen if he loses interest? Odds are that he wouldn't have an apprentice ready to take over. CoCs are like any other rules or laws. Life is better if people did the right (human) thing without rules and laws being "etched in stone". Fewer rules/laws is always better than more, but people being people, sometimes you need them.

LOL, that first line had me rolling.

Get well, my friend. I know it is tough when your main business is talking.

Code of Conduct gets a bad rep because it's easy to screw them up. Some people argue that personal characteristics like gender identity should be essential part of it, while others insists of keeping it as simple as "don't be an ass". Because of that, for many the term is associated with politics that have nothing to do with software, even when that's not the case. That story got blown way out of proportion simply for containing "CoC" in it. It was simple "developer acting like an arse", nothing more.

Looks like even Linux users aren't immune to viruses πŸ˜”. Jokes aside, I hope that you'll feel better quickly. As for code of conducts, I don't see why asking someone to behave and stay civil would be problematic. People who can't follow basic rules of politeness and civil human interactions need to go back to the stone age. Not to mention that slipping rejected code into a pull request is pretty much a backdoor, screw people who are okay to jeopardize the security of other people's computer because of their inflated ego, such people need to get the boot.

Agree completely with your rant and hope you feel better soon!

Shucks! I hope you have a speedy recovery!
