I'm not so sure we'll see a reversal on this decision under the next DoJ. The incoming administration has a public personal vendetta against Google and have stated a desire to seek criminal charges against Google. The current appointee has stated support for anti-trust. I won't be surprised either way, because my expectations are pretty low, but I wouldn't be mad if some innovation destroying behemoths were broken apart.

Chrome OS felt like a side project that got bigger than intended, and had a positioning problem. it was always meant for lower end laptops that couldn't run, or didn't need full blown Windows, but Google produced hardware that was way too expensive and high end for this, their own Chromebooks were just full blown macbooks, which defeated the purpose. No one wants a web based, limited OS for the price of a full PC. Schools seemed to enjoy ChromeOS for a while, but judging from the current market share, this didn't last, and it feels like it's just competing against itself

The Linux Experiment

Google used to have a container based solution similar to waydroid to run its apps on ChromeOS, it was called Arc++. To be honest, I'm not surprised that Google is ditching ChromeOS, they never knew what to do with it. For Android apps alone they changed the technology three times to let people run Android apps. First they had arc welder to run Android apps directly on Chrome, then they had a container approach with arc++ and then finally they went for a full blown virtual machine with Arcvm which was completely stupid because there's no way low spec devices like Chromebooks can run virtual machines.

IMO, Google can simplify this situation by developing a ChromOS linux ditro with a sort of compabilty layer to run the APKs, they have the potential to invest or colab with waydroid, corp always taking the hard path, at least the Linux market share will scall up above that 10% so we can see other companies dev care about linux.
