BTW, in my home environment Debian has always worked much more reliably than Ubuntu. Also for the NextCloud snap.

For starting out you could keep the monthly members vote and do a special monthly patreoncast based on the voted topic. I regularly listen to the Linux Cast podcast where Matt discusses topics with other YouTubers and Linux users, maybe you could find some inspiration from his podcasts.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Don't know why I didn' tthink about it mysefl!

The Linux Experiment

I need to set that up!

The Linux Experiment

Thanks, i'll check to see, what kind of options I have!

The Linux Experiment

Ah nice to know! When I started using it, i'm fairly sure these packages didn't exist, so I'll switch to that instead, thanks!

The Linux Experiment

Unattnded updates is probable the right solution, yeah!

The Linux Experiment

That's a pretty good idea! I'll see how I can implement that. I'm currently planning out some ideas to "revamp" the patreon a bit (not removing anything, but reorganizing, so people can subscribe just for what they actually want, and not get bombarded with tons of stuff they don't care about), maybe this will be part of it!

what about just installing Debian's "unattended upgrades"? it worked perfectly fine for me

Talya

I have 3 self-hosted server instances (NextCloud, Plex and Immich) and they all run on a Debian stable system. When you install it in "the expert mode", you are offered an option to configure unattended upgrades in the Debian installer.

For regular updates: On my Debian instance on Hetzner, there is a script in the `/etc/cron.weekly`directory, which just runs `apt-get`. On my NixOS system, I just use the `system.autoUpgrade` config option. On the topic of inodes: As most of my systems nowadays run BTRFS instead of ext4. I do not run into such problems anymore. Screen Duplication: I am not sure I understood the problem in it's completeness, but in my university there a some display which are broken under windows too, because they report garbage in their EDID information. Just too be sure check, whether you set manually "Replica of:" in the Display Configuration of KDE. In earlier versions of Plasma you could even arrange the display so that they overlap.

For the dead Internet theory video, I think I was shown it once but definitely not recommended your video as much as I would expect.

Brian Grohe

I just watched the dead internet video. And I think the conspiracy angle is a too far detour. The topic, the phenomenon of slop and bots is interesting. The conspiracy IMHO is a funny side-note. The topic itself is really interesting as it changes the way we should talk about socialnet-works. If they all switch to a fortified, they aren't social networks anymore because personal connections are only one minor factor in the algorithm that is designed to keep you entertained - not connected. Moreover the downrank all external links. Until recently these platforms were regarded as intermediaries that connect publishers to audience. But that also gets reduced. If you are dependent on Facebook and Google or LinkedIn sending readers to your websites, you are fucked.

Regarding Anytype: Interesting software, I need to look into it :) I see there are DEB and RPM packages available. And there is an unverified flatpak available on Flathub (last update 17 days ago, so seems to be kept up-to-date). Regarding server updates: System updates are down automatically using unattended-upgrades, system upgrades I do manually if I have time and motivation. For software updates I'm subscribed to the release RSS feeds of the software I use and create tasks for myself if a new version comes out. For most software I've written an upgrade Ansible playbook which automates the update steps but I run the playbook manually.

Updates is a good topic. I just set up a laptop for my mother-in-law with ZorinOS. And I do understand, why updates require the admin password, but that makes it more complicated than needed. It is a very technical thing that suddenly pops up and what else can I do? I can't look into the update. I can only trust my distro and install them. Thus I installed "unattended-updates" hoping, that automatically installs all the important updates without being noticed... Maybe that is also a solution for your servers? I only run a Pihole. That points out updates in the footer of the UI. Sometime I log in, see the notice and then login via SSH to update the software. The only AppImages that I use is Steam and Nextcloud client. Steam has it's own update mechanism that seems to work. Nextcloud sadly has to be redownloaded and replaced manually. Very annoying!

Hey Nick, unfortunate that you won't have the time to make a video based on members votes. But I wonder, why not use member votes to pick a topic for patreoncasts instead of a YouTube video? That way you could have the schedule you want with YouTube videos and still deliver something to members, plus you could probably do more votes per month and you could include more "controversial" or less Youtube keyword friendly topics on Patreon than on YouTube videos, not to mention that a podcast is less work than a video. While I enjoyed watching the dead internet , it probably was too controversial and too out of your niche for the YouTube algorithm.
