It’s true in the comics and most DC media Barbara is Jim’s primary love interest. In fact she’s usually depicted as his wife. However they get divorced in the comics and she’s more like an ex-wife. But Barbara is his main love interest. That’s why no matter what the show did with Barbara you kinda expected this to happen and you expected her to stick around. Otherwise we wouldn’t get their daughter Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl. This needed to happen. Obviously they could have gone in a different direction but you can see the show chose to stick with the typical comic route
