Chapter 6 Reboot, Page 4

This took so long! Yes, there's some actual background work, but mostly I'm juggling a bunch of projects right now. The good news is, most everything else becomes a non-issue after next weekend when the comic arts festival I'm helping run will be over with. I also will be done flatting my friend's comic at about the same time! I will probably still be a little slow because this chapter has a lot more backgrounds than anything I've worked on so far, but I'll do my best. I am kind of getting the hang of things now and more and more enjoying working in color.

Patreon now allows me to let non-members see part of the post, but not the whole thing (not the finished image) so we'll see how that goes.

The new school uniforms... why did I do this!? I ended up adding some gold accents that kind of make them look like flight attendants, so I may modify them again in the future. I added a plaid pattern to Lamia's skirt (and Arma's pants, but you can't see them on this page) and I even designed the school emblem. I will go back and rework the title page featuring them in their school uniforms to reflect these changes.

Art Process

The original black and white manga page! I definitely had to flesh this out a bit more with backgrounds and I had to leave out some of the extra dialogue and sound effects due to clutter.

The digital lineart! As you can see I added an extra building in that middle panel.

Silhouettes!

Flat colors!

Shadows! This used to be my least favorite step but I'm starting to kind of enjoy it now. It doesn't take me as long as it used to, maybe that's why.

Gradations and highlights! Uh oh, what have I done!? I started changing their school uniform's design... Why am I giving myself more work?

Textures and patterns and blush, etc.

The final image! I added an effect I forgot and I even took an hour and a half out of my time to design and make an emblem for their uniforms. Again, why am I doing this?

WHY AM I DOING THIS!? I actually did this so I could copy and paste this into future pages. The symbolism is thought out, I promise! The cross is because this is a catholic school, the hourglass is because St. Expeditus (the saint the school is named after) is a saint representing time, the wings are supposed to be crow wings, and the "hodie" and "cras" are latin words often associated with St. Expeditus. Here's a wikipedia excerpt:

A Roman centurion... gee, who looks like lady centurions in this comic!? (Answer: everyone!)

The next page features grocery store interiors. OH BOY.

(Side note, Patreon is hitting it out of the park with these new features! Makes updating a lot easier!)
