Rain Man 1988 Patreon Watch Along When car dealer Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has an autistic older brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives. Motivated by his father's money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers' cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives.

That’s an interesting point you made at the end, questioning whether they could recommend a doctor in LA so that he could have a closer relationship with his brother. I’ve never heard anybody really suggest that, strangely, and back in my day virtually everybody saw this movie multiple times. I think the doctors felt that Raymond‘s exact specific routine was so vitally important to him? That if he wasn’t back in the facility he’s known his whole life, with the specific staff members like Vern, who he was comfortable with? Sooner or later, they were going to be some bad consequences from that, even if he was OK for a few days away from that environment. Really good question though.
