Just to clarify one thing - schools can’t mandate that a student sees a therapist- in or outside of school. In fact it’s kind of the other way around- students can only receive therapy in school with parent consent. BUT everyone who works with kids within a school is a “mandated reporter” which means that if a teacher or anyone were to ever suspect abuse or neglect, they are required to report that to be investigated by the department of child and family services (or whatever it’s called in that state). At this point there isn’t anything anyone at school has seen to warrant that suspicion so all they can really do is voice their concerns to the parent and hope they will follow through. You can understand why Norma is hesitant to get Norman psychologically assessed as she thinks she’s protecting him (and certainly herself) by not, but she’s also trying somewhat to appease the school which is wise, as it wouldn’t look great if she completely ignored them and that could bring trouble on her too. Norma’s got a lot on her plate that’s one thing for sure!
