Yeah, burying Simon was part of the process. Raphael just meant that there is a chance that Simon would fail the process and be stuck underground, and starving forever, which honestly is a terrifying possibility. I always forget just how flirty Magnus is, like him just blatantly staring at shirtless Alec, I love him. By the way, I assume you meant we are finishing season 1, not going into season 2, right? Because we are "only" finishing up the first season.
