[Early Access] We are living in an all-time great era for Pop Music

Hey everybody!

My latest YouTube video is up early for Patrons! I'm talking about an area of music that I've not talked about in a video before; modern pop.
I know it might seem odd for the Beatles guy to be talking to you about Chappell Roan and Charli XCX, but this is a subject matter that I'm quite passionate about (especially this past year), so please give this video a chance.
I've been working very hard to make sure it's one of my best, and I think it is.

And don't worry, the Beatles do cop a couple of mentions in the beginning!

Let me know your thoughts in the comments to this Patreon post!

Enjoy!

E.

I enjoy you passion for new music! Personally, I would say 1984 is waaaaaay better than 2024, but it's really an apples and oranges comparison for me. Although, I do like several modern pop artists like Dua Lipa and Lorde, there's more a sense of narcissism these days from some of the other biggest stars that I can't stand. I'm sure the 80s stars had big egos too, but maybe because there wasn't social media back then they seemed a bit more distant and mysterious. Also, I personally am not a fan of "diss songs" especially for real life break ups. However, I do agree that female pop artists are more insteresting than the male popstars these days. It sounds like you like some Kpop. Do you listen to many female Kpop acts? That's more my area of expertise.

And when I say it brings me to tears, it is specifically when you talk about Chappell Roan and honestly I’m not 100% sure why

This is like the 5th or 6th time I’ve watched this video and every time it brings me to tears. Your passion about these incredible pop songs is just so amazing! This is my favourite video from you, and judging by this comment section I am not alone in this. This is a masterpiece. I did notice the uptick in quality in pop music but this video has made me a full on 2020s pop fan

Davis H

Other artists? Well, OK Go. Having been lured in by their phenomenal videos, I started listening to the music for the sake of the music alone. And from their debut album onward, I was struck by their intelligence, originality and musical craft. Just think: four great artists who continue to turn out an endless succession of innovative masterpieces because they're a once-in-decades combination. I simply love their works. (Examples to note: The House Wins, Oh Lately It's So Quiet, Needing/getting (the video version, played on a car) and The One Moment.)

Elliot, you are an excellent analyst, an excellent writer and an excellent presenter. I don't keep current with pop music, so I appreciated being brought up to date, and since I respect your judgement, I'll concede there's still a lot of good music coming out there.

Craig Hilton

Thanks Gaby, you really have been there from the start. Love reading this :)

Your comment about Benson Boone at the Grammy’s made me laugh - during the Grammy’s, I literally turned to my husband during Benson’s performance and said “Hey, maybe if he had done some more backflips when he blew up on TikTok, it would’ve been a Boone Summer!” 😂

Finally sat down to watch this in its entirety. As an OG Elliot Roberts Patron, I have to say - and this is hard, because your Ram video holds a special place in my heart - I have to echo what other commenters said, that this may be your best video yet. Even surpassing your Beatles solo discography videos. To me, this is THE quintessential pop music retrospective that people will look back on in the future when they want to learn about the importance of 2024 in music. I’m sure this video was a lot of work, and it certainly paid off. Well done! 👏

It takes a lot for me to really love a lot of the more recent albums. Tracks are one thing, but albums are a whole other story. But Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is an album of perfectly crafted pop, and the anniversary vinyl is on high rotation nearly every night here.

Chris Buchanan

Such an amazing video Elliot, loved every second of it!

Beck Cole-Picton

Elliot !! This is the most sensational video. Very well done, I couldn’t have agreed with your points more, Chappel Roan and especially Sabrina Carpenter were my highlights of last year. Brat wasn’t my thing but I can see why it was so successful. I think this is the start of a new era of pop, hopefully that is going to stay for a while !! Honestly, I think this is one of the best videos on YouTube, you should be very proud 😊👍

Edward Rhodes

The performances were incredible!

Elliot Roberts

Could’ve just talked about how bad the Grammys were lol

Sam

Elliott...I came for The Beatles, but this is your best video to date. It's beautifully edited, put together, informative and bloody good fun! Love it!

Andrew Galvin

That one direction needle drop brought instant tears. Thank you for their mention!

Lauren Wheeler

Fantastic video, Elliot! Really enjoyed this 🤘

I will admit it, I was skeptical! As one of your gen X viewers, when I saw this pop topic , I rolled my eyes and said OK. I’ll just watch it. Well I apologize for my hesitation. I actually learned a lot about this genre that I have pretty much blown off for the past two decades . Your concise summary of the pop music scene that’s been going on in the last few years has actually found me somewhat intrigued. After writing this, I’ll be going over to Spotify to give Charli XCX a listen, considering I now understand what Brat Summer really means. I am inspired to write my own pop music about what it’s like to be a 50-year-old in these times. Keep your eyes peeled in the next few months for the drop of my epic release, Fat Summer.

Thank you!

Jon Reynoso

I’m not a real pop girlie, but this was a brilliant video Elliot! I’m going to give these albums another listen now that I’ve heard from the expert!

Rocky Road

Ohhhhh I am SO excited to watch this, we absolutely are in the middle of a pop renaissance!

Hannah Moran

another high quality video, hats off to you! i’m curious, where are you at in the process of making the ringo discography video?

noremac

Didn't realize Boston Calling was big enough to warrant a mention. When it started, it was in Government Center, where people could still hear the concert for free, even if they didn't pay to see it. It's since moved to Harvard Stadium and is enclosed in a less walkable area, so passersby can't hear it anymore. Back in the Government Center days, I went to hear Beck, Spoon, TV on the Radio, Tenacious D, and I think even the Pixies. Of course, years earlier, back in 2006, I actually saw TV on the Radio and Yeah Yeah Yeahs play a free concert on a grate a Government Center, anyway.

Eric Cheung

I'm so glad to hear that ☺️

I've been looking forward to this video ever since you tease it a few months ago, let's goo!!
