#210 - 6 Guitar Exercises Most People Are Doing Wrong

Before it's time for the much-requested daily  25-Minute Technique Workout Video later this week, I wanted to go over 6 VERY popular exercises and practice topics and talk about some actual practice mistakes that stand in the way of making progress :)

As always, I made some helpful practice files for you right here (video play-alongs, tabs, guitar pro files, backing tracks,...): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iOBP7oMT30oShedFiSrwhQ0gj8V2Zxnn?usp=sharing

I hope that this video clears up a couple of misconceptions I have seen in different Facebook groups or with student videos - I also made a lot of mistakes with structuring my practice routine and also with the execution of different exercises over the years, so I thought this would be a great video topic :)

Can't wait to share the awesome 25-Minute Technique Workout later this week, here's a Dropbox folder for today's video in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hqp6p9ujpgvqju6/AADdzF99Sab8kHOopppAi1Aba?dl=0

#210 - 6 Guitar Exercises Most People Are Doing Wrong

Comments

This is an “old” lesson but man it is really what I needed! I’m working on all 6 exercises, all very helpful indeed. Quick question though, how much time should I spend on each exercise daily? Does the 5 minutes (more less) that both play-along videos last is enough for the day?

Alan Fernandez

This speed exercise is great! Also such solid advice as always. Its crazy how just relaxed with my eyes closed I ran those lines faster than the hardest chugging could ever get me. Sometimes it is just flail and fumble a few run throughs and it will come.

Anthony Fardone

Awesome thank you Bernth I’m loving the 25 minute workout especially the 2nps

jaz

You can definitely alternate pick it, the playback tempos I recorded were just so slow :)

Bernd Brodträger

is there a reason you dont alternate pick the interval exercise B?

jaz

You're an awesome teacher Bernth! Many thanks!

Menker

Welcome Joe and thanks so much for sharing this! :)

Bernd Brodträger

I am still fairly new to the group so Hello everyone. Thanks Bernth this is exactly the constructive practice routine I needed. Of course I've been doing spider exercise for about a week now and some sweeping and some legato and I'm going to start the 15-minute warm-up practice. So I know the legato I have no problems doing a hammer on even with the endurance pull-offs are different story do you have practice that isolates pull-off where you can build endurance I found one of my weaknesses.

Joe Gordon Snr

Thanks for asking! Yes, making the notes overlap is the main goal - that means your finger arch is perfect and you get the most out of the exercise :)

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks for sharing this Ricardo! This piece has also helped me so much with improving, happy that you like it as well :)

Bernd Brodträger

Awesome post, thank-you! Question : For the spider exercise should I be worried about trying to mute the higher strings with the index finger to keep them from ringing out, or just focus on keeping a good finger arch?

Helicoder

Thanks so much for the caprice exercise! It's really challenging and rewarding to be able to play such pieces on guitar, plus I think it helps a lot with trying to learn theory (I'm trying to focus and learn what notes I'm actually playing so that I'm able to learn to read sheet music, which is something that might not be totally necessary, but I've always wanted to do). Again, thanks a lot for this and keep up the great work!

Ricardo Aguirre

Thank you Bernth, again a superb and helpful way to push myself getting better. This is much apppreciated

Michael Frischauf

And YAY music theory! I'm not kidding; all the small lessons diving into is an asset that keeps on giving.

Lauri Laurila

Yes! More mixed pattern exercises!! I do 5-10 impro daily but so that I either "rub in" a certain scale or mode to familiarize myself with it or I explore a certain pattern or lick that I have come across from a book, lesson, etc. Doing things around it. Most recently a lick from Randy Rhoads solo and the triad lesson from #94.

Lauri Laurila

This is a great course. I am always looking for new ways and *what* to practice to help me improve. These types of lessons are especially valuable to me. Thank you very much!

Mocha

Best online course until the next one.

Evan

You're awesome! Thanks a lot as always! I'm truly making progress and feeling that I'm in the correct path thanks to all of this! Keep them coming!

Nazaret García

I've just returned from band practice and now I want to pick up the guitar again, haha. But it'll have to wait a few more hours, because apparently there's some strange need for the human species to sleep as well. Bummer...

Robert Bjärmyr

Thanks for the tabs to the spider exercise ;-)

Jacob Aagaard

Good afternoon my friend! Thank you as always for one of the best starts to the day! 💪🏻

Eric Bailey

Thanks so much for sharing this Rob, awesome to hear about the fast progress 👏👏🤘

Bernd Brodträger

Good morning Eric 🙂🤘

Bernd Brodträger

Bernth content is the best morning show with coffee. 🤟🏻☕️

Eric Bailey

Thanks as always for the great content, fun videos, and awesome techniques! I’ve been working a weekly/monthly routine with your exercises Bernth and they seriously work so well. I’m 18 months into playing, started at the age of 35 and was inspired by bands like Iron Maiden. Thought it would be a lifetime before I could play along with them. Last night I could play “Hallowed Be Thy Name” up to the point where the song gets into the double time speed and the solo. But 4-6 months ago I couldn’t play ANYTHING from that song. It’s just a matter of time and practice 🙂 THANK YOU for all your help!

Rob Lee

As always, many thanks to Bernth!!!
