#193 - 5 BEST Beginner Shred Exercises! (Picking Technique 101)

Before we move to the next exciting and brand new topics next week, you guys and girls voted for a beginner shred lesson - I know that I've been neglecting our beginner members for a while now, so I really hope you enjoy this one :)

The most important part of this lesson: get all your exclusive practice files (in 3 different difficulty levels) right here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mPAimGhRL6SSvXjn6KGkpvykOHG188A0?usp=sharing

I thought the best way of talking about beginner exercises and technique mistakes was bringing an actual beginner to the office for a lesson :) Next week, we will finally tackle a brand new topic and I'm beyond excited to share this with you - hope you all have an awesome weekend!!

#193 - 5 BEST Beginner Shred Exercises! (Picking Technique 101)

Comments

Been playing many years, tried the last exercise, had to play more lightly, played a few times, then played an ascending run I rarely play well and played it better than ever! Realised my stroke is too heavy through excess tension and that the secret is relaxed wrist and lighter touch! Well I never! Always worth going back to basics I guess!! Vielen Dank Bernth!

I know the a minor pentatonic scale and some chords. I only started your lessons yesterday. I’m struggling to figure out the fingering.

That was Prodigy on 3:30?

I can't believe! My wife calling Nata, and try to convince her to learn playing guitar with me. Great video :)

Elkhan

Really enjoyed watching how you interact with a student and how you held back from information overload! I have the same issue when teaching guitar.

Darkboar

Great tutorial !! I have been playing for many years, not making the progress I should have and I found this really good and would be interested in seeing more in this series. I am self taught and have picked up a lot of bad habits, this is helping to fix them. Thanks

Hey there, as I mentioned in the video, I really don't recommend the floating hand approach - it results in issues with control and especially muting/string noise with most players :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi BERNTH, I'm am confused about one part of the video - were you suggesting to leave your picking hand on the bridge or should it be floating? I normally let the outside of my palm rest on the bridge and it's easier to pick accurately and quickly.

MG

That's so great to hear, thanks for sharing Jale! :)

Bernd Brodträger

I absolutely love this! I normally find guitar exercises boring and I lose interest fast but this is actually really fun and it's kinda like a game because it has levels.. i think I unknowingly spent more than an hour practising because I started feeling like I was having fun and progressing.. I can't wait to make it through all the levels!! thanks, Bernth!!

I've been playing self taught for 16 years, and the small beginner tip to rotate the wrist of the picking hands so fingers are out of the way and "you'll feel it, it will feel better", created a huge difference in my hand synchronization. In the months I've subbed, I am already playing leads that I gave up on years ago, resigned to the assumption that "I'm just not meant to be a lead guitar player". Thank you for your quality content and helpful exercises! Very well worth it!

Hey Sandro, welcome to our community! :) Did you check out this recent video yet? Those are the exercises that helped me the most over the last couple of years/months: https://www.patreon.com/posts/192-7-guitar-56590043

Hi guys, I'm new here. And i'm currently working with spider exercise at 200bpm. What other excercise can I add to my routine?

Sandro Luneta

Thanks for sharing this Tim, happy I could help!! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks for asking, Fabian! Around 5-6 months until it came naturally I think :)

Bernd Brodträger

I revisited this lesson again today to actually play through the material with more focus. I was blown away by how off my thumb placement was causing limited reach and my slight lack of hand synchronization. This is now something I need to focus on quite a bit as I have been overlooking this little things for a while. Thank you Bernth for posting a lesson that seems so simple yet is so incredibly important to reach my goals.

Hey BERNTH sensei! How much time took you to change from your open hand grip to the close hand grip?

What happens when you click the link?

Sina

I don't believe Nata has never played she is better than me hahha

jaz

i just improved. thank you bernth

There's no reason not to dial back to fundamentals, no matter how good one is on any instrument - or martial arts, for example. With martial arts, constantly working on the basics all the time is probably clearer than working on basics in music all the time; but the payoff is the same. I do appreciate how Bernth can dial back to basics in different ways and make shredding available to all.

Carl L. Blackwell

Hey Bernth! Thank you so much for this! I'm really looking forward to more like this! :D

Hanna Highmark

Hi ! cant download the files , please help ! Thanks !

So cool! My girl friend and I have been talking about her learning guitar or bass so we can jam together, but I am horrible at teaching and have no patience. Now I will point her to these! yes!!!

bryscorpio

If when I started these videos had existed, today I would not be stuck at 135BPM in my solos! LOL

I agree with Castulo. I am far from a shredder but am working hard daily to get there. Lessons like this are amazing and make reaching my goals feel much more achievable!!!

Tim Hoffman

I think it is a very good idea to focus on guitar players of all skills, I think most of the content is more helpful for intermediate-advanced levels. I consider myself an intermediate level and yet lots of the times I feel like the techniques I'm looking at in the videos are too advanced for me.

Castulo

😂😂😂 This video was great! You two are absolutely adorable! This video kicked off my Friday and my October, thanks for the smiles you two! Have a great weekend!
