#145 - Learn To SHRED With Just 6 Patterns!

Time for a VERY special lesson straight from your wishlist :) Today we check out 6 easy but amazing shred patterns that you can use as building blocks with any scale.

On top of that, I also created an awesome practical guitar solo/shred/picking exercise for you (featured at the end of the video). This one combines the patterns and it's a great workout! Make sure to download your tabs, guitar pro files below!

Happy shredding my friends :)

#145 - Learn To SHRED With Just 6 Patterns!

Comments

hi, I'm just learning to shred. never done it before. Can you provide tabs on how to join pattern one with pattern two, as per your quick demonstration, after you say and the magic happens when joining both patterns together. Could you provide the tab for your quick demonstration?

Joe Di Geronimo

Please click the Dropbox link in the post, there are 18 backing tracks in there! Have a great day

Bernd Brodträger

I just signed up for the backing track for Alternate Picking Solo Exercise and it isn't there. =(

kciryt

Love it. I already feel some progress. Just passed pattern 6, but how come there is no backing track for the Alternate Picking Solo Exercise?

Arnold Mohamed

Hey Andy, thanks for asking! I actually do have very short nails and use the fleshy part of my fingertips for hybrid picking :) It works quite well and I personally don't need the traditional long fingernails that classical or flamenco players have! When it comes to building speed, I really recommend checking out this - hope it helps: https://www.patreon.com/posts/167-extreme-in-5-50839230

Bernd Brodträger

Two questions: when holding the pick the way that you advise I feel like my pointer nail keeps grabbing the string on the stretch parts. I assume you don't want a short nail for hybrid picking when the time comes but curious if this happens to you ever. Probably just a practice thing. Also, that fast run part with the 16th note triplets is very hard to hit cleanly with alt picking. Any other recommended exercises from past videos to help me get those chops up and cleaner? Thanks!

Andy P. Scott

All set, tyvm!

Kreegrr

Thanks so much for letting me know, I just added the backing tracks to the one Dropbox folder link listed in the post! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi, the backing tracks (6 Patterns) link is not working, files deleted. Can you re-add them?

Kreegrr

My "go-to" is to never cross fingers, and in case you know what you're playing (i.e not improvising) you can always work out what works best for that position. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

no jam track for the solo

Rudy Niter

Great video, Bernie - one question I have is how you decide what finger to use on what fret. In the individual pattern exercises you used index finger for 5th, middle for 6th, ring for 7th and pinky for 8th frets but in the solo the index finger covers 5th and 6th fret. Is this just because you need the pinky to reach the 9th and this makes that easier? Is there some general rule to follow here?

Red

Hey Berndt and everyone. This is the videon from youtobe that brought me here!

Dads

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but for Pattern #1 why do we play a upstroke when moving to string #2? Do we practice these patterns with the recommended strokes?

Michael Klym

This is awesome! Thank you so much for such a great lesson!

Christian

Nice!! this will be my workout of the week :)

Leonardo García Ramos

Thanks so much for asking about that Chris! Please read the post and you will find the link :)

Bernd Brodträger

Chris Lee

I'm happy to hear about the improvements with your pinky finger - please don't push too hard and don't hurt yourself, this is all about staying relaxed and keeping the movements small and economic :) I don't want you to end up with tendonitis or any other injuries!

Bernd Brodträger

After a few more days of getting familiar with these exercises my flying pinky is doing even better but now i have encountered a new issue... there is a muscle on the outside of my left wrist that has started burning after doing these exercises.....seems to be working on multiple levels!

Kramer M Riddick

It was so long ago that I don't recall how long it took me to keep my pinky under control, but I do remember doing a lot of exercises, riffs, and songs that made sure I used it often. That way, I was forced to keep it close to the fretboard in case I needed to use it. Making sure I used my pinky regularly in practice also really helped increase its finger strength and allowed me to use it easier and learn more difficult things.

Richard Bendall

I cant wait to do this !! lml lml we defiantly need more of these lessons

adam brungardt

Thanks I'll keep at it. Been doing the same thing xD

Ormando Gomez Jr.

It took me a while to fix that problem for myself. What help me was going through scales slowly and concentrating on my pinky and keeping it near the fret board did that for about 10 to 15 mins before I did anything else and now I don't really have that problem anymore. Hope that helps. (did this every time before I practice or just played around.)

TJ

I have the flying pinky problem. It feel so hard to fix lol. I'm about 1 week into fixing the problem and progress seems super slow so far. I'm wondering how long it's taken some of you guys to see good progress with this problem. It's pretty frustrating xD

Ormando Gomez Jr.

Thanks to one of your earlier videos I was made aware that I have the flying pinky problem. I have not actively worked on this issue but I have had it in the back of my mind when practicing . Fast forward to today I noticed that it isnt nearly as bad.

Kramer M Riddick

Now I understand why a closed fist picking hand is better for shredding. Great exercises. Thank you Bernth!

John Vasiliadis

Great lesson Bernth, I'm 53 now, and have played guitar for a long time. After working through this lesson, for the first time I started to get a sense of what it is like to shred, with my fingers doing what they are supposed to do without having to think about it. I also played them at 60 BPM with keeping my pinky on the E string until it need to move, trying to get that clean sound, combining the idea from another lesson. Would love more like these.

Vincent Johnston

This one is putting my picking hand through the ringer, getting the small movements down is the problem. Helps me understand my weakness though, my picking hand. Cant keep up with 100bpm on this one lol.

Jeffery Gowenlock

Thank you so much Bernth! This is my Favorite lesson from you. So much pleasure to play along with you. I'm a beginner shredder, and after an hour I can play along with you at 80bpm, and it is fantastic. I will "beat" 100bpm soon, i'm close! :)

Zoltán Erdős

App only, no issues through the browser, awesome lesson!!!

Jason Memory

I am getting no sound on iOS. Anyone else experiencing this?

Jason Memory

This is like a perfect lesson with such a reward at the end for putting in the work and coming out being able to play sucha cool piece of music! Love it!!!

Michael Buncher

That picking at 8:02 sounds alot like the fast run in Lamb of god-Ghost walking solo. I had to learn that solo for my LOG tribute band. Super intimidating in front of people but LOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT

Paul Fessler

I love this workout! This is exactly what I needed. Thanks Bernth 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Michael Iadevaio

The thing I’m learning is that the exercises aren’t crazy technical. Anyone can learn to do this. Obviously, you have to put the work in but the notes we play aren’t crazy or anything. It looks more complicated than it is. Which gives me hope! Lol

Justin Peeler

I had the same problem. It’s in the email that Patreon sent that’s how I downloaded it.

Justin Peeler

Any reason why the pdf won’t download on my phone? I’m poking it but it won’t do anything

Goat Surgeon

dude, your exercises are legit

David Annett

that was an incredible lesson. one of my favorites so far and really appreciate the more advanced take on the lesson at the end. Thank you Bernth.

Mitchell Hanson

I think I’ll really enjoy this one, it gives me a place to go back to for practicing something clean. I’ve got foundations to fix heehee
