#143 - THIS Is Why You Struggle With Alternate Picking! (Game Changer Exercise)
Added 2021-01-08 14:00:03 +0000 UTCBefore we tackle your awesome wishlist topics for this month, I'd like to share the first game-changer exercise of 2021 for me - it's about picking technique once again!
Last year, we worked on a lot of 3 note per string material and cool patterns. This year, it's time to up the challenge and to work on more difficult patterns! This exercise forces you to switch between both angles and that really loosens up your picking hand.

Make sure to practice the exercise with the guitar pro files or to a metronome first before you tackle the more challenging tempos of the play-alongs - you don't have to go to 120BPM right away, take your time :)

Bernth - can you also share how properly mute strings? Sometimes I hear that unmuted strings resonate.

2021-01-15 18:53:38 +0000 UTCJust got a new PRS and the action and neck are so much different than I’m used to. I even had to switch picks from Jazz 3’s to Flow’s. Anyways, this exercise is in my new practice routine to help get used to it.

The video play throughs are cool to watch, with regards to finger positions etc, but the attached .wav "backing tracks" are not split into lead and backing :( The feeling of playing along to one of your great backing tracks can only really be done when there isn't the lead guitar already playing with it.

I'm trying to do it on my own but the learning curve to figure out how to do it is a bit challenging at the moment. After using Guitar Pro for a bunch of years now, I'm just now tapping into composing. Cheers!

For example, it looks like you have practiced #104 for months and months, and you said in this video you'll be practicing this exercise for months. Is that typical? Do you recommend we work on the same set of exercises for weeks and weeks until they're mastered? My initial guess is that progress will eventually "peak" and slow down, and that it would be worthwhile to work on something else. But, maybe that's not the case...
