#135 - Sweep Picking: Finally Solving The BIGGEST Problem!

Since there is no clear final winner on the wishlist, I'd like to show you something really cool I discovered in today's video: this is an effective trick concerning the extremely challenging sweep picking directional changes!

I also made some video play-alongs for the exercise in the video for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ubqg43ltc2010yn/AABLLbCxbEmyqeyGgnAbAfHXa?dl=0

Since sweeping up and down different shapes isn't that interesting in the long run, I experimented with different patterns recently. During one of my routines, I discovered that this trick (the wrist motion on top of the shape) really helps with escaping the 'deadzone' between the strings! I really hope that you can get more creative with your arpeggio shapes and sweeping sections with this approach, it definitely helped me a lot already :)

Hey David, the third block of the recent sweep picking course shows the fingering I like to use, you also have a video play-along exercise: https://www.patreon.com/posts/178-best-5-sweep-53365055

What fingerings do you use for the Ebdim?

David

Hi Bernth, can you post the backing track here of the play along video? Thanks

Davens Michael

oo im having a bit trouble going from 80 bpm to 120. Gotta creep up to that tempo in more smaller increments. still almost have it perfectly at a first attempt ✔🐺👌

Marshall

Thank you so much, it is so aggravating not being able to work it out

There's a really helpful play-along workout with sweeping exercises coming this week, I think this will really help with solving these issues! :)

I have the same problem too. Some help?

Manuel Garcia

i'm having the same problem for note with high harmonic (12th/7th fret) did you figured it out ?

I had a similar question - by changing the F# (transition note) to a down stroke, it also gives weight to the note - which is on a beat. Ultimately, we should be able to do it either way! But it also feels more natural to me as a down stroke. Great lesson Bernth!

Would this be ok to work on if I'm not very good at sweep picking ?

Justin Wagner

This has been a massive help, I always seemed to get stuck in the transition from down to up this has helped a lot, cheers Bernth, another great lesson.

Hello Bernth, Great lesson as always!! I follow you sweep pick masterclass and in the "change direction" lesson, you procede in a different way regarding the directional change of the sweep. Indeed, you recommend to change the sweep motion at the transition note . So here, the F# on G string is usually for me a downstroke according to your masterclass. Is it an improvment of your technique? Do you recommend to work both technique and find the one which fix better to the playing? Anyway Thanks a lot, I see a big improvment since march thanks to your lessons!

Hi Bernth, great lesson! I have been working on this exact shape/pattern, but I have instead been using your "3 string sweep hack" from the 10 Steps course. During the 1st down section, I will downstroke on E, hammer-on B, then upstroke on G. Do you recommend this new technique over the hammer-on "hack"? Would you use one technique over the other depending on the situation? Maybe a little of both?! :) Any input you have is helpful! Thank you!!!

Daniel
