seems to me like you've come to a complete impasse in language. so, you can add whatever adjective you want to the noun 'film', right, but the actual currency of the noun itself isn't really altered at all--nor is it any closer/farther away to the "truth" of what the noun itself attempts to contain as a material, worldly thing--it's just being added to or, uh, turned into a modified noun. i'm a total donkey, ok, but take the adj. "philosophical" and then "philosophical film". what does that mean? if philosophy is to be defined as "the investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct" then...what film ISN'T philosophical? it's more like, what does philosophical filmmaking "feel" like...which i can't describe whatsoever...but I "feel" Bergman fits nicely into whatever "philosophical" is as a loose genre-definition for film. same goes for Surreal. the word means (apart from the actual philosophy itself which is a minefield intellectually) "marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream". the artificiality of all film, of any film made, is always closer to a dream than reality just by the very fact that its a simulation, right? of reality. "surreal film" just like "philosophical film" feels grammatically redundant to me yet I 'get' it nonetheless. ok. sorry. forgive me.

Honestly, this was my introduction to Bergman and I agree with you guys I was a little disappointed. There were definitely some interesting parts, but overall I didn't understand the hype around this movie. I am interested in checking out more Bergman at some point though.
