Once upon a time, a warlord in China worked his way up from the mostly illiterate son of a village exorcist and drunk, to becoming a street thug, and eventually an officer and military governor who gambled so much he bankrupted his province while riding into battle on an armored train full of his harem, which numbered in the hundreds.

In a very ineffective attempt at assimilation, the Manchu Qing dynasty forced all adult men (targeted at the Han) to wear the Manchu queue (shaved front, braid in the back) on pain of death.

Like Zhang Xueliang, the opium-addicted failson of China's most powerful warlord at the time. After he takes over, he kicks his opium habit, (allegedly) has an affair with Benito Mussolini's married daughter, tells Japan to fuck off, and willingly joins the KMT. Later on he kidnaps Chiang Kai-Shek (AKA his own boss) to force him to stop fucking around with the Communists and focus on the invading Japanese.
