Lazy modeling is frustrating.
Added 2019-05-14 23:17:52 +0000 UTCHey guys, just a special post I wanna talk about. Sometimes when I work on models, there are things that I cannot help thinking. This one was a situation that it’s mostly frustration vent, but I would also like to make a point about it. Sometimes I think “I should stop and let Patrons know about this” and just keep going, but I’ve reached my point, and it needs to be said. If you really don't want to read this thing, feel free to either skip to the last elements after the pics or skip this post whole thing.
I’ve been working on Ashe and I’ve got some progress on her. The issues began with her face rig. I don’t know why, but from modern games, I think she has one of the worst face rigs I’ve ever seen in a modern game. Is honestly up there with Angel.
I dedicated my free weekend to analyze Ashe, and I noticed an issue right away that it would be the bane of this model. She has a wrap around tattoo, but that’s not the issue I’m even remotely worried about. I was worried (and rightfully so) about her outfit.
I cannot wrap my head around the idea that a game that has been racking so much money (thanks to lootboxes and not because the game is good) it’s this goddamn lazy when it comes to modeling.
There’s a huge difference between Efficiency and Laziness.
The reason for bringing that difference is because her outfit is just one goddamn welded piece. The belt is not separated. The boots are not separated. Not even the goddamn tie is separated. Everything is a one textured mess.
Normally, I would argue that the player don’t need to see those many details in a “fast paced” FPS, but that argument is out of the fucking window when Dead Or Alive 5, a FIGHTING game mind you, that has shit moving ALL THE GODDAMN TIME, have way more details in their outfits that many, MANY games would like.
Dead Or Alive modeling is really efficient:
- Do you have shoes? Don’t model feet.
- Are the breasts not visible at all? Do not model breasts.
- Do you have a bikini?
- Remove the exact places of your body mesh to avoid clipping.
- Are the breasts actually visible? Model ONLY what the player needs to see.
- Do you have a skirt? Add panties and remove places.
On top of that, almost each outfit piece have its own set of Albedo, Normal and Specular maps. That is model efficiency: Put details, but don’t do more than what the player needs to see.
With Ashe, I get everything one texture that only lacks her hair and her hat, oh and the tattoo? It’s a fucking Transparent mesh. With how many lootboxes you have sold (and keep selling,) that’s being either fucking cheap or fucking lazy, and I vote for the lazy, because it doesn’t make sense how a model with such lack of detail still have an *overly rigged hat*. THE FUCKING HAT.
Progress so far before stopping to make this post.

This is what I have fitted so far before the I gave up to the need of telling you guys what’s going on.
As you can see, her pants are missing the boots (I more or less regret separating them, but it’s for the better), and you can see that her shirt and pants are not even close to be together. I might leave it like that, because this lack of detail is frustrating and it wouldn't matter in the end. I might modify the shirt though and remove some parts of the bottom so it looks more like a shirt and not like a round shirt with weird flaps.
At the end of the day, this might be more like I’m bitching than anything, but I honestly believe I do have a point when it comes to model efficiency, specially when the final product suffers from this aswell.
This basically means the only thing left to fit is the boots and the “gloves”. Let me just say the chances of getting the cap on her pants is incredibly low. Serves no purpose other than add another difficulty layer of posing honestly...
Also, I just wish I could remove the whole brown areas of the pants and turn the boots into "thigh high boots." Those fucking hard painted flaps however...
