Special Patron Commission

Hello everyone!

Sorry for this post but this is something that I need your opinion about it. We already have the winner of the Patron Commission, a Huge Gunship.

I started scratching some ideas on a Paper, to plan this miniature before starting to work on the PC. While planning the first Idea that came to my mind was to split the model into smaller parts to be possible to print in a resin printer (Eleggo Mars 2 pro, my current and only way to test models). The idea is to use those dungeon tiles as a reference to build a ship (You would glue the pieces and assemble your ship), this way you could have a ship of any size you wish.

While breaking the parts to decide what to work on, more ideas came to my mind (and also with the suggestion of you guys):

Doing those things would require more time than what I can spend on a Patron commission without ruining the month's production.

What I can do: A modular Gunship, possible to assemble ships with different widths ( Width: 4in, 6in, 8in,10in, or 12in), no interior (I would use mine as a stylized box, and play map because the interior would be hollow), 1 deck option, 1 Tip option (eagle), cannons, probably no locking system (pieces would have to be aligned manually).

My idea was to make a Kickstarter if this Gunship did not pass in the voting with what I can do as basic and all those other things as stretched goals.

I don't think that releasing now and doing a KS makes much sense to you guys because, if you printed the first time and if I release a KS, you probably won't print the ship again to glue newer parts. But at the same time, you might wish for the ship in the way that I can do and you are not interested in the rest.

Since I was not clear because I did not know how big and the number of possibilities this project could have, I think that it's only fair that I do this question, What should I do?

As I have spoken before, I want to make a Gunship, this request was so cool, and probably the one that I wanted to work on the most compared to all Patron commissions. I also want a Gyrocopter and a Siege tank, but this is not the case lol.

Please give me your opinion on this topic in the poll below or leave a comment. It will end on June 28th.

I won't be voting, I will let you guys decide.

Best regards,

Ivo

Glad to hear that, I sadly have no income, so whenever I support creators, I do it to build my library for in the future, I really wish I had more to support everyone :/

I'm just excited you're doing KS in addition to Patreon, all I can say is - yay more Imagine Minis content XD <3

Mini Manatee

I'm excited for the KS. Will definitely support that. I understand that a gunship will considerably consume more hours than your normal projects so I'm ok with your decision to delay it.

I know that you guys don't have an infinite amount of money and I also know that many of you support other content creators (and I'm glad for it, I would probably not be here if that's not the case). The reason for doing the KS is that I want to make it bigger than what was on the request, I also forgot to mention that I would be doing only the outer shell as a base Ship, not the interior. When I read the comment from the requester, I thought that it was not what he was looking for, I felt the need to create this poll. Don't worry about it, the ship will also be released for patrons as a Loyalty reward, therefore supporting me on KS will be completely optional. However, the stretched goal will not, these might come to Patreons at a much longer date.

Well we also do not have infinite money... that's the thing. And we DID vote on it... if I shut my mouth, this poll would not have happened and we would have got it in patreon as planned x_x A customer has more than one creator to supply...

Doing Patreon/Tribes and then supplementing that every few months with KS projects is what many other sculptors do. Honestly you produce a great amount of content each month and some people are lucky to pay only $4 or something for that - I do think the Gunship project suits KS more and has the potential to do really well ON TOP of your monthly subscribers, which may be a nice financial boost.

I understand your point but at the same time, I cannot agree. A project like this would take me 80+ hours, even in the basic form, if I add the printing cost to it this would be too much, add that to the fact that it's not a complete Gunship (The outer shell would be complete but he interior would be lacking) and this would bother some people is enough for me to question should I really do this? If I do a Base ship structure and release it on Patreon, the probability of someone joining the "complete" Ship KS would be lower, think like this, would you print 2 or 3 Gunships, each would cost 1KG of resin, I bet that many people would not even print the first. I will tell you something about myself, I love miniatures, all kinds of them and this became a hobby for me. I was FDM printing 32mm RPG miniatures (I know they were like crap, but still, I liked that), and I started working on 3d to make gifts for friends. Right before the Pandemic start I had my kid and became unemployed, then the pandemic started and the lockdowns came, and I was unable to find a Job so I focused my efforts in improving my 3d and turning this into a profession. Time passed by it's been 2 years, the number of supporters it's almost the same as last year and I can't fully pay my bills. I'm already working nearly 200 hours monthly hoping that I can get more supporters, but it's not effective. If I could I would give every miniature for free because they are awesome but, unfortunately, I have bills to pay and I need to reinvest my time in other strategies in order to keep sculpting miniatures.

If I really want to do all those pieces yeah it would

Thanks for the info. I was planning to build a prototype to show that it's really possible before releasing the KS (this way I would avoid some problems like the project being bad and it gets delayed or I have to redo everything). Regarding Intellectual Property, I will not do exactly the same thing, it will be possible to reach in a similar ship but it won't be possible to make the same, since it's modular people will build different ways.

I haven't seen costs and everything related to KS yet but I don't plan to overprice things. I will do a prototype and will release the KS afterward, hoping to increase the chances of success.

Errr... I definitely would not want to have to pay if it was what we ended up voting for D: no Ogre please... this is not the idea I had in mind when I suggested to do the poll... I suggested to put another winner for this month so you can do a basic ship for us later Do not forget that it is what we voted for! xD I will feel guilty if because of my idea we end up not getting it... The concept of a basic ship and then having small bits every release to fit the theme would be so cool! it would be a great reason for new people and recurring patreons to sub so they can have something to build and all! the tiles and planks could even be used to make buildings. That way you won't just sell a warband every month, but also some things that would allow people to push their creativity every month for small diorama, base decorations, for their ship, etc. An Ogre or Chromie will be just one model guys we can have them any other month! think of the possibilities of having new bits to make terrain or ships with every month!

I'd definitely side with going down the KS route (not Frontiers) and giving yoruself more time to work on the project. It would he likely that the Gunship will swallow up way more time than anyone would anticipate.

Fraser

A Kickstarter might be the best option for the Gunship. As an avid KS supporter my advice would be to pre-produce the basic Gunship kit and maybe the first few extras and print them out. That way you'll have not only the renders but also the physical thing to showcase. One thing to think about is the wider reach of KS as well as the topic of Intellectual Property. I've seen many promising KS projects confronted with cease & desist orders and shut down afterwards.

thats pretty unlikely, all depends on how Ivo structures it, most KS's for 3D models have extremely low goals, and something like a gunship has great options for stretch goals for different equipment/weapons

Mini Manatee

The problem with KS is that there is no guarantee that it will succeed. It is unfortunate that the gunship might not even be made at all.
