Thank you! -- Stream topics?

I'm blown away by the response so far! Can't wait to show you guys more.

As I move forward I'll be posting every Monday and Thursday. Then once a month I'll have a livestream, either on one of those days or (more likely) the weekend. I'll let you know once I figure out the time!

I'm actually doing a livestream for Streamily this month, on October 14th, where I'll be drawing a print that will later go up for sale on my streamily store (preorders available), though this one will be public. Patreon streams will likely be towards the end of each month. And on that note--

What topics would you be interested in hearing about? I've heard some good ones like "advice for beginners", "world building strategies", etc. Some topics I personally would love to discuss are "burn out & recovery", "inspiration vs plagiarism", and I think it would be fun to just geek out with other animators about artists we love. All while drawing some fun shit, of course. (Please note I won't be discussing TOH outside of referencing my experiences for other topics)

Let me know what you're interested in!

Hope it isnt too late to reply but specific horror art inspiration/worldbuilding would be cool to hear about!

angel

Portfolio building

Jackie

Worldbuilding advice definitely! More specifically making a world with magic/magical people and how to establish a power system.

zelda

I would like a basic story telling tutorial. Even if it’s only the slightest advice on protagonist’s weaknesses to overcome in the story.

Liam Gradwell

I think those topics would be awesome!

Filippo Guariento

everything i know about burnout and recovery comes from kiki's delivery service

kaylitz

So that’s what Tinella Nosa would like with arms.

TOkun92

Of the topics mentioned, I think the inspiration/plagiarism sounds the most interesting. Outside of that, I’d find it interesting to get your perspective on working/collaborating in a professional setting. We always hear (or imagine) the horror stories of how the “dumb executives won’t let creators do what they want”, and there’s certainly merit to that, but I’d be curious about the other times when the feedback actually did provide a better result.

P K

Too bad.

TOkun92

I’d love to hear you discuss burnout and recovery!

Audrey Bird

Do streams on your favorite Video Games! 😎

nerdgerm

Hey Dana, Just wanted to thank you for all zhe Beautiful Animations and storys we had the pleasure to watch thanks to you! Keep up the awesome work - I am looking forward to Everything you do :)

klaus kalmbach

so so so excited for what’s to come here! i love your art style and your ideas are incredibly inspiring

kk

Sorry I do not take commissions in general

Dana T

As an aspiring game designer, I don’t think there’s very much that could translate from your areas of expertise to mine, but I’d be interested in learning about what a good pitch looks like.

YellowPie

I’d like to know if you take commissions for those of who don’t have the necessary skills to bring a character to life on paper. Also, if you do, do you limit them to original characters, or do you do fan-made ones as well. For example, an Owl House OC someone might have. I’d also just like to say that The Owl House is my all time favorite show, and your my all time favorite creator. You know you’ll say one show is your favorite, then you’ll remember another show, then you’ll split them up into categories? Yeah, no need for that. The Owl House was my all time favorite show, hands down. Not just as a show, but as an inspiration. The writing, artwork, everything was nothing short of phenomenal.

TOkun92

Yes!

Dana T

Are the streams going to be recorded for watching later? I'm asking mainly due to the time difference.

Matthew Mawdsley

One thing I’ve always struggled with and that I’ve always admired about your work is making characters distinct from each other in terms of prospective, speech patterns and personalities whilst still being without anyone feeling out of place Idk if that made any sense but I’d love to hear more about how you create characters

DrillSharkPrince

How do you deal with writers block and lack of motivation to draw for your own enjoyment. I’ve been having trouble getting myself to write and draw with burnout, being in the right mood etc any advice or tips on that I would love to hear :)

Flix

Everyone else has these fascinatingly in-depth questions on how the business works and all I'm wondering is which TOTK temple was your favorite. 🤔

voyager-ngc5195

For starters, I wanted to say thank you for the Owl House and the inspiration that your original artworks have inspired in me. Some topics I like to learn from you or explore would be world-building advice, creating unique characters, and developing confidence as an artist. I know confidence is something a person gives to themselves, but I like to know how it can be practiced artistically from another person's standpoint.

Danny N.

How do you foster personal creativity outside of work, especially as a creative professional? In other words, how do you maintain a work/life balance with creativity when being creative is both your work and life? Personally, I struggle with having the spark to execute on a concept for personal art/design after the work-day ends (I do level design for games) and am wondering how you've approached this problem. Also, thank you for inspiring so many people with your art! <3

Hexadecimal

How to start as a storyboard revisionist? What it consists of, what type of portfolio to build?

Dafne d'Esposito

oh! and how to make coherent story lines, i can world build and character build really well, however i personally struggle with coming up with coherent story lines whether it just be a simple plot point or a complex overarching story,,

DecayInRust

Advice for getting into the animation industry and where to begin. As someone who wants to get into that industry and has no idea how to start, it would be really helpful.

RandyBeans

tbh i would be fine with just listening to you talk about whatever while drawing some cool monsters, but if you do want some topic ideas i always find world building and concept building fun, also would love to hear more about how you personally built your art style because its one of my all time favorite kinds of styles :)

DecayInRust

Any advice on storyboarding or booking a job as a storyboarder would be cool!

Austin Roe

Honestly just starting out would be great! I love the writing side of making cartoons and would like worldbuilding advice in general or figuring out where to begin!

Jackie

Doing figure drawing/gesture streams would be so much fun, I always love seeing your figure drawings (Olympic athlete/dancer studies 💪) and working alongside your streams would be fun for practice in improving my own figure work. I also agree with streams about the topics you mentioned too, it could really be anything and I’d listen haha.

Emily (@strawberryoolong)

Would beating art block be up for discussion?

Xellos

Maybe as a side topic discussing how best to round out your portfolio when job searching.

Angel Hutchins

I would be super intersted in all of these tbh but the burnout and the advice for begginers seems really interesting :]

MoZomz

Would be v interested to hear you discuss more of your thoughts on inspiration vs. plagiarism!

Chika P

This maybe a little less on the visual art side, but how to write your visualizations? Or basically how you get your sketched/drawn ideas into a written screenplay or translated onto a conceptual story for those that have a hard time structuring or preparing.

smidg3n

Oh ok, hope u can draw my Amphibia OC Anthony Boonchuy soon.

Miy Eterp

Woah cool, hope u can draw my Amphibia OC Anthony Boonchuy in the stream soon. Also today is what happened during the Battle of Mogadishu AKA Black Hawk Down.

Miy Eterp

It's just a personal patreon, not my full time job haha. It shouldn't be "news worthy" in any sense. But I appreciate you being here!

Dana T

I would personally love some kind of horror art stream! Why drawings made with color, especially contrasting color & compelling poses have the potential to creep out the viewer. The first episode of TOH Season 3 is one of my favorites for this reason and it could make for a really compelling seasonal character design teaching tool!

Andrew

Hi Dana! I would love to hear advice on how to improve as an artist in the animation industry when you know you have so far to grow still. How do you get over the whole "I know the art I am producing is not on par with industry standard?"

Dee Wang

Probably just tired of answering the same questions over the last… what? 5 years?

Jurnee Jakes

But there are a lot of unanswered questions regarding TOH. These include things like who the Bat Queen's original owner was and how the Archivists managed to kill the Titans. Are you saying that you haven't figured out answers for those things?

yyySamyyy

I haven't seen any major outlets report on your Patreon, even though it will likely form the basis for your next show. Do you know why this is? It seems weird considering that you are relatively well known.

yyySamyyy

I think it would be very interesting to hear about what it's actually like working with the suits. ESPECIALLY working with the mouse and their laundry lists of do-dos and do-not-dos. This could pair nicely with "here's the good/bad of working with corporate" contrasted with "here's the good/bad of working indie". But mostly I want to hear the horror stories of Burbank. I'd also be interested in, as a showrunner who came up with the whole concept, how did you decide what to champion and what to offload/delegate. How did you balance overseeing everything and everybody while still making sure it is still the story you wanted to tell.

Ian Washburne

I’d be super interested to hear how you approach starting a new project once you have the inspiration to take an idea to the next level!

Layne Caldwell

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Elizabeth Berumen

Personally, I can have a hard time with criticism (whether deserved or not), and I’d love to know how you dealt with it in your projects.

Jurnee Jakes

I feel like strong theming is so important in stories, but I don't see much discussion how writers creators actively work to keep the themes solid and present in their work. I'd love to see some more insight in that process!

Nabil Samandari

I would love to know more about working as a showrunner or how to gain confidence in the industry since there is a lot of competition. I really like to hear more abour burn out & recovery I think is a great topic!

Adriana Luna

Heya Dana! I'd love to hear you talk a bit about themes in storytelling! Like, how much do you focus on a show's overall theme in each episode, what work do you do to maintain it, and how can a story's theme evolve throughout its run?

Nabil Samandari

Would also be really cool to see the creative process of creating a show in general c:

Nazura

I would love to hear about strategies for keeping motivation working on a story when you're faced with doubts and criticisms. How do you keep at it? Supportive collaborators? Workshops? Unbreakable willpower? I've been trying to work on a story that I think could be really special, but it's incredibly difficult to keep momentum.

Shawn Tabai

Advice for beginners would be great. I need guidance.

Michael G

Burnout and recovery hits close to home, and I'm curious as to your thoughts on worldbuilding.

Sepublic

OOO that's a good one!!

Dana T

I don’t mind what you stream tbh, the streams gonna be awesome either way, I’ll be there 💖

Nolan

id love any kinda stuff you make tbh, you can talk abiut anything on stream and id love to watch!

Milly Moon

I'd love a stream about how to rough out character designs for a pitch.

Rhees and Monique

I love the burn out and recovery topic! Also would be interesting for beginners on how to write/create characters (especially villains/antagonists) and their personalities and relationships/interactions as well as character arcs and development. Oh maybe advice for writers just starting out or trying to keep on track for writing. There's so much to talk about it'd be too much in the comments!

Psychtaku

i'd be interested in learning about how you think about balancing collaboration verses sticking to your guns. always something i feel like i never get right!

afb

Too interested to know your point of view on "inspiration vs plagiarism" :000!

NuggetBuster!

Advice for beginners would be lovely to hear about, being able to translate thought and visuals into actual drawings, when progress isn't showing and how to push through those mental walls

Nazura

YAY, so exited for those live streams. That plagiarism vs inspiration topic sounds very interesting 😤👏

Rancid

Yeah definitely. Had to work on top of school so no time for personal/fun art. And started working immediately after college so it was just non-stop grind.

Julisse Tinoco

I will be archiving the streams for the 1$ tier to be posted at a later date. Eventually I would love to open the stream to every tier (and add more rewards to higher tiers as a replacement) but I'm not so confident yet and need to get used to the routine. Thank you for your patience while I figure this out!

Dana T

Both the burnout and inspiration vs plagiarism topics sound good. I'm also interested on what inspires your horror art, it feels very unique to me

passionpeachy

As someone who has an active blog and likes to write fanfiction, I want to hear your ways of dealing with burnout. I've seen it make people who started out loving their creation begin to hate it. That and world building.

Jungoguy

Would be grateful if u recorded and posted the streams after its done, i am not punctual for these things but i love listening to podcasts and recorded livestreams while grinding in video games, the audio would not go to waste thats for certain

Amber S.R.

That’s fair. Your art outside of TOH is often beautifully gruesome all the same.

Jurnee Jakes

It was that bad?

Jungoguy

I personally am very interested in anything about drawing inspiration from history, mythology, protoscience, etc. I see a lot of it in your works, from the Titan referencing various creation myths wherein the world was made from someone/thing's body, and now your idea based on the Four Humors! I've just barely started cracking open an idea centered around alchemy (both literal and symbolic), and most of my ideas are drawn from tropes in folklore/mythology and even nursery rhymes! I'd love to hear how you (and anyone else chatting in the stream!) draw from such sources.

Ajax Noë

this, i agree (especially as a very burnt out individual)

Amber S.R.

The burn out topic would be great. Similar to that I’d love to hear about your sketchbook habits! Art school ruined my relationship with art and I’m working on repairing it, I haven’t filled a sketchbook in years 😓

Julisse Tinoco

While there is some legal stickiness attached to TOH I also don't have much more to say about the story. Talking about "what could have been" becomes quite depressing, if I'm honest. I'd rather look towards future projects with optimism!

Dana T

cryptids

Nemrex

I feel like talking about burn out is an incredibly important conversation, I know more than a few artists who constantly go through these loops of overworking themselves to the point of burning out, then getting stressed they aren’t working, and then overworking themselves again to make up for lost time. I think hearing tips from a professional would be very insightful!

meepsalot

Yes! That's the plan for now. Eventually I would love to open the stream to every tier (and adding more rewards to higher tiers as a replacement) but I'm not so confident yet and need to get used to the routine. Thank you for your patience!

Dana T

Inspiration vs plagiarism may be a good topic

Isaac Netero

Insight to your world building proses would be rad. Creative burnout, too.

Justin Ackley

I'd love to hear your takes on projects that inspire your aesthetic. Especially lesser known or short animation projects, but also other art and books.

Grason Cheydleur

Both Burn Out and Inspirations sound like great topics that I’d like to hear about. While many supporters (myself included) would probably like to hear about Owl House stuff, it’s understandable that it’s both in the past for you maybe, as well as probably a licensing thing. Hearing about the development or alternative ideas that came up would be interesting all the same. Those beta designs became wildly popular.

Jurnee Jakes

Burn out and recovery strategies would be awesome! It applies to multiple professions and life situations so everyone can use the advice. I produce and DJ and have experienced burnout after hyperfocusing. Also, you deserve all the happiness!

Anthony Melnyk

Would love to hear your thoughts about your process of storytelling and concept ideation. As in, what does the journey look like for you from that inspiration to something fully formed. And also the subjects you've highlighted already would be super interesting!

Vic Iddstar

I'm actually specially interested in the burnout and recovery, along with the inspiration vs plagiarism

Ashe_Hole

The inspiration vs plagiarism sounds interesting!

Kelly32305

Inspiration vs plagiarism would be a great topic to hear about!

Rhysie-Cup

I'd personally love to hear you discussing favorite places to draw inspiration from or what the challenges are for writing compared to drawing and how to mesh them into visual storytelling.

dogexmachina

Will the older streams be archived and available to watch for those on the $1 tier? I assume that it’s only for the $5 tier. Thank you.

Ravenpotter

What do you think about when you write and what you think makes a good story?

Grant

I would love a stream of old designs for characters we already know!
