Databases, Indexes, Cloud Hosting, and Analytics
Added 2019-08-14 22:45:21 +0000 UTCkheina.com has moved from amazon web services to google cloud platform. This is why the website was down for a few days a couple weeks ago, but with this move come a lot of perks, the most important being the logging and analytics that are built into gcp. With these tools, I'm able to keep an eye on searches, errors, indexing status, database updates, and more and quickly determine if and when something goes wrong.
In addition to this move, while I had the opportunity to play with the database in an offline state, I was able to add some key indexes to the sql tables that decreased search times by about 90%. Where people saw 10-15 second searches, they will now see 1-2 second searches.
I plan more additions to kheina.com in the near future, including how much information will be shown about results on the results page, and trying to get integrated searches off the ground. I would also like to add some patreon perks as well, but this involves adding a user account system to verify patron status to unlock additional features.
With that having been said, the core functionality behind kheina.com, searching for the artist behind your favorite artwork, will always be free for everyone. But I am interested in providing an incentive to backing the project on patreon. If you have ideas for this, let me know.
