YES, I'm caught up! Franky's backstory is underrated, I love the overarching themes that are set up in that flashback about the right of existence. I also love how much Carter likes Sanji, because I'm a big Sanji fan myself, even though his gag can be unbearable at times (especially later on). I just love his vibe when he's not being a complete degenerate. He always comes in clutch and I truly believe he's the kindest Straw Hat. I cannot wait for Enies Lobby and Post Enies Lobby, there is SO MUCH PEAK AHEAD. Summer thunderstorms are the BEST. So if you wonder how Iceberg got ”Franky” from ”Flam”, it’s the fact that L and R share a phoneme/is the same ”letter” in Japanese. They both start with the two kana ”fu” and ”ra”. It’s another good example of how pronunciation works in Japanese, where the ”u” is so often silent (even in the first syllable here). Like I said before, you can hear it very clearly when they say Aqua Ragna as well, and as Jack noticed with the St. Poplar sign. Yep, that’s what it can look like when you don’t put any thought into it! Let me tell you as a translator, this can cause so much confusion, lol. Tom isn’t just saying that ”the one who created them” should love their ships, he’s saying in a way that can also be read ”the parent who gave birth to them”. He’s seeing shipbuilding as akin to creating life in a way. Also, his introduction was omitted in the anime for some reason (One Pace actually added it back in, so I ws confused when it didn’t show up here!). His fishman type is translated as longhorn cowfish, but in Japanese it’s kongō fugu. Kongō is the Hindu and Buddhist concept of “vajra”, which is used for certain weapons and fighters, like the thunderbolt Indra uses, and is a symbol for indestructible truth. I don’t know if Oda was going that deep with it, but I think it suits Tom! Yeah, no, most of what those station employees are doing is filler (including this whole scene where they talk about government spies), they don’t have that kind of information. This gives the entirely wrong impression of what the general public knows. I think the Sanji stuff can gett too much in the uncut anime, because it more than doubles what’s in the manga, making the balance feel really off. Sanji never met the shipwrights, so he wouldn’t have any impression of them outside of this scene! To him they’re just more government people. Raccoon dog is really Tanuki, the animal that in folktales are able to change shape to play pranks on people. Pretty common reference in manga and anime. -kun as a suffix has several uses, but generally it’s either how you can adress male members of the same organisation (schools, workplaces, that sort of thing) who are on the same level as you or lower (and teachers might also use it for male pupils), or the way employers can address employees (of both sexes). It’s polite, but can have the slight connotation of talking to someone who knows less/has less experience and is someone you can tell what to do. Which is what I absolutely think they’re going for with Nami and Sanji, lol. (It’s also used a LOT more in manga and anime than in real life.) Nami falling is also just filler. She has very sure footing… unlike Zoro, apparently. The anime likes to have her fall a lot, don’t know why (also a lot of extra zooming in on her cleavage added in). Also the flashbacks from the recent episodes as she’s running. And lots of extra panting, lol. Ha, yeah, that’s why it’s Aqua Ragna: the watery ragnarok. In Norse myth, it actually involves the whole world being flooded! I think for Luffy getting stuck it’s more an emotional thing than anything else: as soon as he knows that Robin did what she did to save them, he can get out no problem. I also think that Oda is showing how similar Luffy and Zoro can be in their idiocy, although I agree that Zoro just slipping and falling wasn’t the best way to have him end up like that. But it’s the nature of writing a serialization like this: there’s no way to go back and edit.

They picked them all up for me” got me sobbing right away ngl, there’s so many beautiful details to unpack about robins character. and omg I’m loving the nami and sanji appreciation so much!! those 2 are always taking care of the crew in their own ways, and I adore how the love that the straw hats have for each other is always displayed through their actions, the way their bond is constructed is a masterclass in found family tropes imo lol. the franky and iceburg lore is incredible to me, both lived the same traumatic experience but the way each dealt with it is so different and interesting. Iceburg became the mayor of water 7 and created the galley-la company to take care of the city tom loved and brought back to life once, while franky led the guilt eat him alive and decided to deprive himself from doing what he loves the most, he was presented as a demolisher in the beginning of the arc, so it’s like he’s been punishing himself for “hurting” and failing to protect tom. the writing is so good, yokozuna fighting the train for so many years cause he still wants tom back, making usopp and franky bond (a man who loves his ship unconditionally and someone who can’t let himself do that), so many details, love to see you guys so invested in it too!! so excited for the next drop🕺🕺

One thing I noticed about Nami on the rewatch is that selflessness you spoke about at the end has actually always been there. A few moments that come to mind straight away for me were: The willingness she showed in her backstory to sacrifice her childhood for her whole village When Igaram's ship got blown up at Whiskey peak, she was so quick to comfort Vivi despite knowing they had to fight Crocodile When she got super ill after little garden and was adamant that she didn't want to delay getting to Alabasta for Vivi's sake. I feel like a lot of the strawhats have their "negative" character traits / tropes, but they're all good and kind people - they wouldn't be on the crew otherwise, cos that straw hat fella is such a great judge of character

KEEP AURA FARMING MY KING SANJI!!! You know Mr. Prince is always cooking something and having such good lines. I'm happy Carter loves Sanji. I love Sanji's gags especially in pre-TS, I can still appreciate his character even now. I think Jack is going based off future gags, but even so, they could never make me hate Sanji. I love Franky's backstory with Tom and Iceberg. I did shed a tear when Tom was giving his speech to Franky about being proud of his ships no matter what. And I like how we got to see more on the world government being corrupted. Those rats To me the stuck gag wasn't that bad or long, I kinda just laughed and shook my head. It was only 2 episodes of it, so people in the comments before saying "Enjoy 20 episodes of Luffy being stuck" were just joking. I love the moment of Luffy pushing the two buildings (just raw strength by the way). Hearing Robin was gonna sacrifice herself for them, was enough to give Luffy the strength and motivation. I really appreciate the iconic memes we get pre-rike skip like Chopper standing on that guy’s shoulder with Zoros sword LOL. I'm so glad they're not using One Pace so we get to see those small moments. Also , Sanji absolutely cooked even tho he wasn't around so he didn't hear Iceberg's explain Robin's intentions he still went to the station waiting for the occasion to jump on board and is slowly making his way to Robin. He never stopped believing in her which is why he got a head start and was even able to see Usop being kidnapped and left that letter to Nami . Also Nami is sooooo under rated man she literally got knocked out by CP9, fell off a window, woke up, made it to the train station before 11 so she would’ve made it if they didn’t depart early, and then went back to knock sime self into Luffy while seeing that huge wave. She was fearless!!! Honorable mention to Chopper too he saved Nami from the rumble, saved iceberg, paulie and tyronausorus from the fire (chopper is weak in hot environments) and then saved Zoro with his jumping point before the wave hit. One peak ahead we’re boutta see one of the best rescue arc in history.

Cannon for the different titles for peoples names “San” is the most common I feel like just because it’s pretty broad and formal so you can use it for someone you just meet. “Kun” is a masculine title for a friend and “Chan” is more feminine. It all depends on your relationship to the person and the dynamic you guys have. Like you can call your brother “Onisan” or “Onichan” and both are correct it just depends on the dynamic. But “San” is the default. There’s also “sensei” for someone who teaches you, “Senpai” for like upperclassman, and “Sama” for royalty. There’s other one that I don’t here a lot like “tan” that I’m not 100% on but that’s the gist of it

I would personally recommend switching to One Pace at this point. I know Carter already mentioned that you plan to use it for Enies Lobby, which is great, but I really think starting now would make the overall experience smoother and more enjoyable. The pacing in the original anime slows down quite a bit between Water 7 and Enies Lobby, and One Pace helps keep the momentum and emotion of the arc intact. That said, as someone who usually recommends One Pace across the board, I actually agree with sticking to the original anime for the backstory in Enies Lobby. It’s only around three or four episodes, and the way it was done originally really works. Of course, it’ll be a great time no matter how you go about it. Just wanted to share my thoughts. One Piece week is cooking 🗣️🔥🥶

This is around about when I had to face the fact I liked Ussop as well Geks its okay 😭 Seeing the geks still be in denial like "Yeah I don't like Ussop at all but every time he's on screen recently it's been absolute cinema and some of the best moments have came from him recently and his characters been really good recently but AGAIN I DO NOT LIKE HIM" is actually too funny. I have to say the first time I watched the anime I didn't have much love for Sanji, but on this rewatch he's one of my favorite characters, sure its annoying sometimes but I really don't think his "simping" gets in the way of his character as much as I used to, but of course it helps that I know his whole story.

After rewatching the anime a couple times, I love him more and more each time, and you realize how much a clutch player he is. I completely agree. I love the fights in One Piece, especially in some of the later arcs. But Water7 and Ennies Lobby along with it are some of my favorite arcs just from the story, character devolopments, and worldbuilding alone.

Thank you for a great reaction. I will have to disagree on the Luffy being stuck and only getting out on the last min being pointless tho. I think that scene is one of the many scenes in OP where Oda uses situations to portray the mental states of some characters and it is easy to miss them and think nothing more unless maybe you watch it a couple of times and really sit with it and think about it. Like it is easy to think "why didn't he do that at first" but when you think about Luffy as a character, from everything you've seen so far you realize that luffy is someone who has always solved everything with strength. There has never really been a moment so far where the crew has gone through this much emotional turmoil and this arc is where Luffy's captain skills are really put to the test. First ussop leaving the crew, someone who has been his best friend, then Robin disappearing without a word and then when they found her, she rejects them and on top of that he's realized the people that's taking her are people he can't currently beat with strength. After getting thrown out and stuck, Luffy wasn't motivated at all, we have seen what motivation to save the people he loves has made Luffy do, We have seen him get angry and so emotional over his crew, but after everything that happened I think Luffy was struggling with emotions he did not know how to regulate. He felt stuck, he didn't see what he could to change their situation or Robin's, reason wasn't helping him, strength wasn't help him, how does one stay motivated when everything he's known so far is not helping him?. Ofc he's not tapped in. But hearing Robin sacrificed herself for them, she's in danger, that is where his motivation kicks in. That's why they kept showing the flashbacks to Robin saying goodbye when he was locking in to push the buildings apart. Luffy is always motivated by the simplest things, he gets strength from knowing it's okey to help a loved one. That is why he did not help Nami in arlong park until she asked for it, but he knew something was wrong enough to stick around and when she asked for help he did just that. But Robin did not even do that, she kept rejecting them and even though he knew something was wrong he felt stuck in doing anything because Robin was not giving him any reason on top of his defeat against Lucci. Idk if you guys will read this but I just had to get it out, I love Oda using these types of situations to showcase a characters emotional state, its one of the things he loves doing and one of the things I love about OP and why they storytelling is IMMACULATE.

Really enjoying One Piece week Geks and can't wait for what's to come, but I think to truly enhance your experience and understanding of Oda's GOATED writing, I'm gonna explain in detail the deeper meanings to the "Luffy stuck" scenario and why it has way more depth than just a basic scene of "Oh Luffy is stuck again, how annoying, lazy writing". Really hope you guys take the time to read this. At this point in the story Luffy has been shown to have an unbreakable will/mindset and never doubt himself. But over 2 days in Water 7, Luffy has had to bitterly fight his friend Usopp over his "dying" ship Merry and watch him leave the crew, and has had Robin go missing without reason and then appear to betray the crew and bail on them in a horrible way. For the first time Luffy is really feeling the crushing weight of leadership and his role as Captain is being questioned and tested. The scenario of Luffy physically stuck between the two buildings is mirroring just how emotionally and mentally stuck he is. Luffy is always free-spirited and agile but now he finds himself unable to move, reflecting his emotional and mental paralysis. He's unsure of what to do next, the weight of responsibility is constraining his usually unshakable will and mindset. Luffy rarely shows signs of hesitation or internal conflict. It’s a simple scene but it is actually a quiet moment of crisis where the burdens of being a captain literally immobilize him, and he realizes that not all problems can be solved with strength alone (ex. he can't fight his way out of Usopp's grief or pride). Nami reassuring him that his belief and trust in Robin as a person was correct all along is what he needed to lock in and free himself from the chains within his mind, and in turn regain his willpower and physical strength to break through the building so that he can save his friend. Nami being the one to help him also shows that he won't be able to become King of the Pirates on his own. Something else extremely important to point out is that Ep 254 is the first time in 20 episodes that Luffy has smiled or laughed (the longest span in the series), which is insanely important to showing his state of mind. THIS is Eiichiro Oda's writing. He is telling us that Luffy is human, and that he is growing, even if it seems like just a basic scene. One Piece is full of moments like this that might be simple or annoying or boring at surface level, but if you really think about it, actually has great depth and layers to it. The layers and depth to nearly every scene is a huge reason why One Piece is like no other and has been able to continually grow and be peak fiction for 25+ years. If you Geks have read this I hope it has given you a glimpse of the depth and brilliance of Oda's writing, and to just think a little deeper throughout the journey of One Piece.

The suffix "-kun" in Japanese is typically used when addressing a male whom the speaker is close to, often younger or of equal standing, and can also convey a sense of endearment or playfulness. I think Nami calling him "Sanji-kun" while he calls her "Nami-san" (swan) emphasizes their unique relationship, where she is more casual and playful with him. I'm glad that you brought some attention to it cause it may be beneficial in the future

Also idk who but someone asked about the suffix “kun”. It’s normally used towards younger boys or men of lower hierarchical status. It can be used in other contexts to (like romantic attachment, a close but not overly familiar relationship etc…), but in Nami’s case, seeing as she doesn’t address anyone else in the crew with honorifics, it kinda comes down to a number of things mainly relating to their their dynamic. Sanji feeds off of this attention, he’s always chivalrous to the women in the crew, and he himself uses honorifics towards them only. The same can be said about Robin as she also addresses only Sanji with honorifics.

Also to clarify neither '-kun' nor '-chan' are children specific. You're right in that '-san' denotes a certain level of respect/politeness! But the others are more so just to indicate a certain level of familiarity/closeness when used between friends/family. There's a lot of different contexts though, like '-kun' is more often used for boys whereas '-chan' is more often used for girls, but those aren't really rules and not always true - for example '-chan' kind of carries a more cutesy feel to it, so generally male superiors in work/school may refer to any female colleagues below them or students as '-kun' (ex: All Might, when referring to the students) to avoid the impression of them hitting on them, whereas it's not typical that an older guy would be referred to with '-chan', but it's not unusual for little boys and stuff.
