THE GOAT MARINE HIMSELF! what i love most about one piece is all the lore dumps and character interactions there are in between every arc, it gives the show new stakes every time and adds bits and pieces that will eventually connect to the arcs to come in the future. and make every major event even more impactful. i would also say that oda is the goat at introducing characters in a way that it makes sense and its not like he just puts them in there at some point, people like aokiji, blackbeard, doflmaingo etc. theres a purpose on when and how these characters are introduced for the story to progress in the best possible way.

Aokiji’s motto, as he said is “Lazy Justice” which basically means that Aokiji takes a calm, laid-back approach to things, only acting when absolutely necessary. Or when he deems the situation serious enough. An example of this is what we just saw in this episode, when he meets the Straw Hats. At first, he tells them he’s not there to capture them, but after spending a bit of time around them, especially after watching how they protect Nico Robin—he starts to sense the kind of threat they could become. That moment when he suddenly changes his mind and decides they should die shows how quickly Aokiji can shift when he feels the balance tipping. It’s a testament to his unpredictable nature, and how he can go from lazy to serious in an instant. On the surface, he doesn’t feel very intimidating, but when you dig deeper into his character, he’s actually pretty terrifying and hard to read, which, in my opinion, is exactly what makes him so interesting. Also I get what Cannon means about the aot/one piece lore meme, and its funny, but let me say somethin real quick. And I promise you Geks, this isn't just me being a One Piece fan (since AOT in my top 3), you will understand what I mean as the show progresses. In AOT, you get these lore drops which are so concentrated and so much in one episode, which each affect a few things in the story which makes them so hype. But in One Piece, the later you go into the show, you just have such an unfathomably larger lore understanding of the world than AOT. Like I could write a PHD on the world of One Piece yknow haha, and that's the same for every person who watches it. So when you receive lore heavy episodes or shocking twists, even if they're more scarce than AOT, the level of which you understand their implications and how they affect the world is so drastically stronger it's unbelievable. And it's in that way that One Piece lore hits different to any other show. Oda will introduce a concept or world event, that as soon as he says it your brain makes like 30 connections. Like "holy shit this will affect these three groups of people, which means this might happen, and this changes how this is viewed in the world, and now that this person has this knowledge they can finally do this, and our understanding of this concept has been wrong, which explains why this happened earlier" and so on, like its wild.

whole Water 7 saga about to be a fucking BANGER. Without saying too much, also the first time I really enjoyed any fighting that was happening so I reckon you guys will as well. Also without spoiling anything or giving too much insight, it's really hard to just say which class of fruits is better than others. You might be able to say on average Logia are stronger, just because they naturally provide such good offense and defence, but there are definitely exceptions for each class of either insanely strong fruits, users, or a combination of both. Oda loves subverting expectations in ways its hard to imagine before it happens, so we'll just have to see how our fruit knowledge expands as the show goes on. 🤭

No, his idea for getting a shipwright happens in the last chapter of skypiea in the manga but the Toei decided to put it in the G8 filler arc. One pace included it in the last skypiea episode but the geks already finished skypiea before they did it.

I've been saying from the beginning. The LRL arc might of been in the manga. But in the anime, Luffy gets the idea of finding and recruiting a shipwright for the crew in the G8 arc. The whole LRLL arc isn't as important as people think; it is just that one fight with Aokiji, nothing else. They could have had a MUCH BETTER experience watching the G8 arc, where the memes are iconic, and just watched the fight. They didn't have to go through it. A simple search could have saved them the trouble😐🫠

Buggy’s fruit is insanely OP if you think about it, he is just a weak user. In theory he should be able to split his body infinitely to the level where he splits himself beyond atomic level and tampers with nuclear structure, so he could basically become a nuke. If I remember correctly Buggy was creating some bomb in the beginning so unironically that could even be a foreshadowing 😂

I get what Cannon said about lore drop in AOT and One Piece. But there are some differences: 1) One Piece is an adventure and journey, imagine we sail on the sea and explore the world, lore will just come piece by piece. 2) One Piece world is way more grand than the AOT world, the amount of nations, characters and the interconnection among all are insane. Some lore need context and layers on top of it so they cannot be presented just at once or in early chapters/episodes. I remember Moist Critical mentioned "I'm in awe by how well written the universe is". This is also my feeling when I catch up with the show and all dots started to got connected. 3) on a rewatching we already see some foreshadowing and important lore but at this point its just difficult for you guys to understand. Jack got it, it's like your rewatching AOT. 4) nonetheless I do feel Oda intentionally keep some lore to latter parts of the story but from a writing perspective, its like the Mystery Fiction, this is a common way to create tension and to make the final reaveling satisfing.

Wow, really good point from Cannon about Aokiji being provoking! It did seem deliberate, didn’t it? I never thought about it that way before, but I think you’re totally right. Agreed, Luffy does tend to be lucky. I think he even says it himself at some point, but I might be misremembering. But he also is really good at analyzing fights. With Crocodile it was all about first realising that water neutralizes his powers, finding a method to use that, and then moving on to the ”blood also hardens sand” line, which I personally think goes so hard. I sort of agree with Carter about the fights, but I’d put it more like the fights serves the story and the plot theme rather than being the end point of them. And some of them are definitely very hype, don’t worry about that! Foxy is pretty strong, though definitely not enough to seriously threaten Luffy IMO. He’ll get hurt, but for fights like this I also have the suspicion that Luffy likes to go with the theme because he thinks it’s funny. Although he’s definitely serious about not letting anything happen to his crew! Not that it’s that important, but the end of LRLL 5 and beginning of 6 are STILL FILLER, because get this, Toei didn’t even animate the canon parts in the first place! Canonically there is no mole guy, instead Aokiji froze the sea for Tonjit to get to the next island to start looking for his people (there were no refugees either, and they met Aokiji on Long Ring Long Land). Literal hours of filler, and then not adapting actual canon content, lol. By which I mean that LRLL in the anime is a mess even with one pace. There was only so much they could do, and this is not a remarkable arc to begin with. For this arc Oda did a really good colour spread: some of the crew in kimono and samurai attire. be fair though, the statement of one piece in terms of battle shonens being one of the weakest when it comes to fights was true until the late 800s of episodes. So something similar carter said earlier on was pretty true. It's so crazy hearing the Geks talk about how the fights so far isn't as memorable, because it reminds me of how far One Piece has come along with their fights. I have One Piece as one of the top animes with the best fight scenes I have seen as of today. I have a few scenes I've seen that tops with Demon Slayer. Obviously Demon Slayers fighting scenes are one of the best in anime, but I just wanted to compare how far One Piece has come with fights because it's up at a certain level now. I CAN'T WAIT until the Geks witness the great fight scenes in the future as we continue watching.

Carter: “how did he(aokiji) find them so fast?” Well actually the first snippet of Aokiji you see was part of the last chapter of the skypiea manga, along with that Doflamingo/Bellamy scene you saw but the one piece anime rearranged its order to be closer to Aokiji’s main debut I guess. We told Jack to watch it at the start of the arc but it didn’t turn out that way, so you would have waited the whole LRLL arc to see him if it was ordered correctly, so the timing would have seemed more ‘realistic’.

Indeed, for me, the best moments of One Piece aren't necessarily fights, but the motivations and stakes behind the fights, as well as the pasts of characters, and the lore tied to the Void Century thingy, Poneglyphs, the one piece,.. I was listening to your talk on lore at the end & wanted to say that the series contains far more depth than it might initially seem. The length is due to its multiple layers & depth of plotlines. The anime adaptation's pacing defs contributes to this length tho. Modern anime typically adapts 3-4 manga chapters per episode, but Toei adapts on average 1 one piece chapter per episode (later in the show less than 1 chapter even), leading to stretched scenes & slower progression - hence use one pace for more accurate pacing. For example, Wit Studio plans to remake the East Blue Saga in approximately 25 episodes, whereas the original adaptation spanned over 60 episodes . But despite the slower pacing, each arc is still rich with story & lore. Recontextulisation is insane in this show - rewatching or rereading One Piece after reaching a certain point, it's insane to see how much was foreshadowed from the beginning. It’s not like there’s a huge empty plotless gap between now & the major mysteries yet to be revealed, there’s other layers & lore within them that you will get answers to as u continue the story. - (remember moist criticals review 😂 - that will be u guys too! If it weren’t for the insane depth of the plot, the story would have not survived such a long paced adaptation.

Admiral Aokiji is actually based on the late Japanese actor Yūsaku Matsuda—one of Eiichiro Oda’s favorite actors. Oda used Matsuda as the inspiration for Aokiji’s appearance, personality, and laid-back way of speaking. Matsuda was known for his cool, effortless charisma, especially in his role in the 1981 film Detective Story, and Oda admired that a lot.
