2024-07-19 10:33:13 +0000 UTCYou can't hate on the painted lady for not being the saving grace and wiping out humans for the sake of other humans. I know you were worked up, but if anything you should be hyped that the painted lady didn't want to seek revenge for someone pretending to be her. That's what I always thought when I saw this, that the painted lady would show up and be like "don't pretend to be me" like most spirits or deities would. But she's appreciative that someone was using her name and image to help those who couldn't be helped, and the people of her river. So I've always found her thanking her a total heartwarming and relieving moment. Spirits are powerful and can be vengeful, you don't want to mock taunt or upset them. lol

2024-07-06 01:47:03 +0000 UTCCool but dark fan theory for this episode I heard several years ago. Doc is a former soldier in the army with PTSD, who lost his brothers Shoe and Bushi in the war and formed some kind of coping mechanism which we see on display whenever he 'switches'.

It definitely is sort of a side quest for the gaang, but I also just enjoy how it puts on display who Katara is as a person, and I think it only adds onto her character, and the episode even added more to Sokka's character for me. Having seen this episode about 20 times now, I definitely appreciate it a lot more.

2024-06-28 21:41:49 +0000 UTCOther people have already explained why the Painted Lady didn’t help earlier, so I’ll just add on that the idea of animism shown in this episode-the river having a spirit, as well as its apparent duty to protect the town, is very similar to Shinto animism, and belief in Kami. In this context, the people of the town have a duty to protect the river, which will provide and protect them in return. It’s a belief system obviously meant to encourage people to live in peace with nature and focus on conservation and sustainable practices. By allowing the river to become polluted the people had lapsed in their duties to nature and the spirits. And the stagnation and metaphysical corruption of the waters prevented the Kami from manifesting.

2024-06-28 19:55:45 +0000 UTCOn the painted lady that appeared at the end, spirits are as powerful as the medium they dwell in on the mortal realm so since the river was polluted she was pretty weak, once the Gaang cleaned the river she could once again appear and will most likely protect the village.

Some think that she couldn't use her magic or take form in the physical world while the river was polluted. And another theory about this episode I heard somewhere: Shoe and Dock and Bushi were actual brothers, but two of them got killed (probably by the firenation army) and the third brother developed a split personality out of grief and trauma. Just a theory though.
