2024-05-15 08:08:21 +0000 UTCEpisode 12 clarifications: MaoMao doesn't become a courtesan now that Jinshi is buying out her debt. It's actually the opposite. MaoMao STOPS being a courtesan due to her debt to the old hag being paid off. Now, MaoMao would just be considered a "worker" of Jinshi's or whatever title he prefers to give her. Remember... a courtesan in those times is basically what we refer to as an "escort" in modern times. A slight difference might be that courtesans of old would typically have skills beside the flirting and bedroom stuff. Hope that helps!

They said she would live in the "detached southern palace" or something like that so... still a palace and much better than living on the streets or what have you. Remember, she's a lifelong friend and the ORIGINAL LOVER of the current Emperor... I doubt he'd treat her badly just because she's not a concubine anymore. Ange: The tears you saw fall on the stone floor were actually from Ah-Duo. It was a clever transition from her pouring some sake out for the girl who committed suicide to her tears hitting the ground at her feet. It was a way to show how much she cares without actually showing her crying directly. Though I don't know for sure, I agree with you Ange about Jinshi being sad about Ah-Duo's leaving the rear palace. It could just be that he grew close to her due to her motherly desires (we can assume she summoned him to drink with her often/hang with her since he is her son) or it could be that he DID have some idea that she was his mother. Carlie: Lady Lishu (the young concubine) is not taking Ah-Duo's spot as you said during the discussion. She simply ran to Ah-Duo during her exit ceremony because she thinks of Ah-Duo as a surrogate mother and cares for her deeply. Lady Lishu is already a concubine of the same rank as Ah-Duo, so there's no reason SHE would be the one taking the position. Ah-Duo's slot will be given to a NEW concubine at some point in the future. Bonus: So the baby that died was the legitimate younger brother of the Emperor. He would have been a MUCH younger brother but, as he was the Empress Dowager's child, that would make him the current emperor's younger brother indeed.

That's why he brightened up when she said it wouldn't be a bad idea and then deflated when she made it seem as it would still mean that she would work for him and not a romantic thing.

How on Earth would Ah-Duo be a foster sibling of the Emperor if she was the Dowager's daughter? That would make her the LITERAL BLOOD SIBLING of the Emperor which is not the case lol as the show made clear by the word "foster." Empress Dowager means "current Emporer's mother." There was no true incest between the current Emporer and Ah-Duo. Also, does Jinshi look older than 17? It's anime. We've seen plenty of High School anime where the main characters look old AF lol. Keep in mind we were getting some of Mao Mao's internal monologue while she was reading the records about her "father." Stuff like "man who drags his leg like an old woman" and "a doctor who is too overqualified for the pleasure district" were thoughts Mao Mao was having as she was processing this new information.

I think she correlated being "kicked out" as "from being a eunuch" vs "kicked out" from being a "doctor" LOL. But it was still hilarious to watch.

We speculate that he is part of the imperial family because some implications have been shown to the viewers. She speculated that there might have been a swapping of the babies between Ah-Duo and the Empress Dowager, but it's not specifically about Jinshi.

2024-05-12 19:26:07 +0000 UTCidk if this answers your question in ep 11 but what maomao is implying with her theory is that jinshi could be the emperor's son, but was raised as his brother. the other baby was born from the current emperor's dad and mother, so it makes sense that the babies looked similar, that means they were uncle and nephew with the same age, crazy. that's how i understand it, ngl it was hard for me to get it in the first watch so take your time to discuss and figure things out too😭 maomao's brain is everywhere all at once lmao i'm glad you're enjoying the series so much, so excited for the second half too, they're equally good imo, this show is S tier for me, thanks for the reactions🕺

(Which I think we can infer is almost certainly the case, Maomao is just in denial given how much trouble that would cause for her if she had correctly deduced that.)

Mao Mao also said in these episodes that she doesn’t let herself get too attached to anyone, so that also plays a role.

2024-05-12 18:47:09 +0000 UTCYup so since technically it's not a spoiler, we can infer from Maomao's "speculation" that biologically, Jinshi is the current emperor's and Lady Ah Duo's son, but legally, since the babies were allegedly swapped, Jinshi is recognized as the empress dowager's son, that is, the current emperor's younger brother. Either way, he's definitely a noble, not just a eunuch.

2024-05-12 18:39:36 +0000 UTCmaomao,s father luomen was punished and expelled becuase they DID eventually find out that the babies were swapped and he didnt catch it. so jinshi, ah -duo, and the emperor all know that jinshi is ah-duo and the emperors son, but they keep it under wraps publicly... ah-duo stayed a concubine even though she could no longer bare children for so long to stay close to the emperor and her son jinshi. shes no longer in the rear palace as a concubine, but the emperor has set her up in the outer palace to keep her close by.
