You are correct about the underhand serve! The overhand serve is definitely superior. It has more speed, power, and precision than the underhand serve, and you have the option to either go for a powerful serve or a float serve. However, the underhand serve does have its uses, and is in fact more commonly used in beach volleyball than indoor volleyball. This is because in beach volleyball, you're not using ceiling lights but the literal sun to blind receivers. Also, beach is 2v2 (indoor is 6v6) so if you mess up the receive, it's much harder to recover. As shown here, it does have its use in amateur-level indoor play since it can catch an unprepared team off-guard. However, it's still not really "good" compared to the overhand serve which is harder but much better. The underhand is virtually extinct in professional play in both indoor and beach. Still, it's a fun way to showcase a different volleyball technique that still feels appropriate since they are all still high school students playing at the school level!

The underhand serve was the trademark of one of the greatest Brazilian players Bernard, in Brazil we call it “Jornada nas estrelas” serve which translates to “Star Trek” serve, in English I’ve seen it called “Sky Ball”. Bernad was an absolute menace with this serve and it had a cool factor unmatched, I used to wait for the moment he would serve.
