There is a bit of a political nuance behind the reason why Reinhard isn't joining this fight. Without delving into the details, Reinhard as the chief knight of the country is backing Felt to become the next Queen sovereign of said country. This raid was organized specifically by Crush who is simultaneously the matriarch to her house and a competitor to Felt for the throne. There is great political deterrence even if he himself wanted to pure-heartedly contribute to a good cause.

Ange, I feel you my dude, Rem's always been my own favorite anime waifu moreso than emilia at least based on what we know about Emilia so far. Some may insist that he loves her like a friend (I'm looking at you Carlie), but their "relationship" has been significantly more nurtured and grown than Subaru's infatuation with Emilia. Maybe it's the time loops erasing progress with her, but I always felt like Emilia's that "idolized" girl in rom com movies where the main character doesn't notice the best friend with the glasses the entire movie until the final arc. Say whatever you want, Rem is best girl, not to belittle Emilia at all, but I vibe more with Rem sometimes.

Was their specific familial connection explained in the anime (and I missed it), or is this a detail from the light novels that hasn't been revealed in the anime yet?

That was because it was a shitty, basic-ass sword that couldn't handle Reinhardt's actual power. There is no contract on him using his specific sword other than he must deem the enemy worthy of drawing it. That's all we know.

Reinhard even mentions him ruining his reputation over a fight. Julius wished for Subaru to not get killed because he still to a point understood and accepted why Subaru was behaving the way he was. But he would not let someone insult his profession. Julius needed to show him why he was wrong and showed him a mercy in the way he beat him. He may hate Julius forever and many will regard what Julius did as cruel but in his eyes he saved someone’s life and taught them a valuable lesson.

2024-01-20 19:03:17 +0000 UTCNo real reason to watch the Director’s cut for the post-credit scene, it’s literally the first scene of Season 2 and they’ll watch it after the OVAs I imagine. I think it works better to start Season 2 off with that scene, rather than see it before the OVAs

FYI, as you are gearing towards the end of Season 1, there's a special end credit scene at the very end of Season 1 (ONLY available in the director's cut version of Season 1). That end credit scene does show up again at the start of Season 2. But would be a huge point of discussion at the end of Season 1 and a lot of theories going into Season 2.

2024-01-20 16:53:27 +0000 UTCSubaru doesn’t just dislike Julius because he kissed Emilia’s hand, sure that’s part of it, but it’s deeper than that. Julius is pretty much everything Subaru wishes he was, respected, gallant, proud, and strong. Subaru’s flaws are made more apparent when held next to Julius and that’s why he’s so jealous of him in particular. He doesn’t feel worthy of Emilia, and sees Julius as a man who would be. Then of course Julius kicks his ass and breaks his limbs in their fight (even though that was an act of kindness as Julius beat him so badly that other knights no longer thought it worth killing Subaru.)

The ending of episode 21 is by far the most rewarding sequence the show has had so far in S1. Wholesome level 100 Subaru achieves a goal that extinguishes the bad mark he left in the capital. Killing the whale changes everything, he’s a hero now to many people. Plus he gets to bring Julius, Wilhelm and Felis to the next fight (Willhelm and his wife’s moment there, ugh damn onions) But Then…… Subaru and Rems moment is the most satisfying payoff at this point to me. After all the pain they went through to get a W here. Subaru when answering Rem if he will keep her by his side. In the anime he says “I should be the one begging you for that”. In the novel he says “you are mine, I won’t let anyone else have you”. DAMN Subaru… The best is seeing Rem light up when she realizes what he’s saying and why he holds her like that now. Rem wanted a piece of Subarus heart. We knew it from ep 14 on. But, she was willing to throw that desire away if it meant Subaru would lead everyone they care about to a better future, starting with Emilia. We all felt for Rem in that moment but over the last few episodes their bond grew. They were able to be so open with each other now and beating the whale solidified it. Rem realized in those final moments while talking to Subaru, she got that piece of his heart. Thats why their embrace is so intimate. Ange is correct and even in the novel Subaru says in this moment he loves her and cannot live without her. That’s how he truly feels at this moment. But anime cut the scene, would’ve been way too long to fit in with everything. Anywho, Rem got injured from the trees shockwave btw (cut from anime). Thankfully she will be heading back to the capital with Crusch now as she is not in fighting shape. Lord knows how much we’ve seen her go through in this arc, so it’s nice that she is going to head back and get a well deserved rest. Next up, we go to try to save Emilia and more time with our favorite brain trembler………
