I'm posting this as a reply since it's the same topic, take all of this with a grain of salt since this is from my memory back when the show came out. I remember reading that they brought promising young Japanese classical musicians to play for each respective character i.e. Tomoki Sakata (who won the Franz Liszt International competition around that time at 19, I think the youngest winner ever if I'm not mistaken) playing for Kousei and Yuna Shinohara playing for Kaori and a few others who I can't seem to find any more, so this could also just apply to the main characters Like I said, most of this from memory from my superfan days, so if anyone has anything to add, please do. And yes I have a clear bias, Tomoki Sakata was a real inspiration for me as a teen playing piano at the time, who had stopped enjoying playing, so this anime has special place in my heart.
