I think Carlie just misunderstood what he meant by "experienced death." Someone can have an experience with the phenomenon that is death when a loved one dies, right? So, Wilhelm likely meant it that way.

"Definitely" and "canonically" are way too strong words to use for the anime. You have to remember, the anime adaptation is NOT the novel version. It's slightly different. Subaru LOVES Rem but he's not IN LOVE WITH her. There's a huge difference that anyone who's been in a relationship and had to break up with someone because they weren't in love with the other person understands. edit: Realized Carlie said this exact thing after writing this.

Subaru definitely is in love with Rem, canonically. He just has a weird obsession with Emilia that he considers to be love, similar to Betelgeuse. I think it's way too often misunderstood as Subaru not loving Rem, but(especially if you've read the novels where they rely less on implication and straight up SAY it) Subaru is in love with both Rem and Emilia, and it's pretty clear from their interactions.

About your theory in the beginning. Its funny that you imagined this "alternate timeline Subaru". Mainly because over the past few years on Subaru's, April 1st, the author releases a "What If" story that depicts what would have happened if Subaru made X decision instead. To my knowledge, the most famous and longest IF Story is the Sloth IF Story which details what would have happened if Subaru and Rem did run away together. After finishing S2 I recommend watching a video summary a few of them, in particular, Sloth, Pride, Wrath, and Greed.

Best ground dragon has arrived! Ep18 is another iconic one, so much spent with just the two characters talking, and the ever quoted "I love Emilia". There is also a whole Light Novel that covers what would happen if Rem had taken Subaru up on his offer Re:IF Ep19 we are getting into end game, the plans away. I always love the haunting ending with the ringtone.

Think it would’ve been more warranted had this episode happened and Subaru kept treating Rem the same way. Kinda not really paying attention to her or only really caring when she was in danger. From the end of episode 18 and on their relationship changes. Which is why I don’t really feel bad for Rem. Ultimately she achieves her goals here but delving any further from ep 19 would be spoilers so gonna hold back till then. People just needed to be more patient with him and allow him time to take in everything. His feelings that he’s had since EP1 can’t change in a moment. It sucked to tell Rem that right there but he deserves more benefit of the doubt of how his character would evolve going forward and not just on that one moment.

Always found it very peculiar when reactors would get angry with Subaru for not ignoring the feelings he's had since the beginning of the series. This was very refreshing. It definitely sucks for Rem, but that's life. We can't force people to feel the same way we do.

Subaru has been saying how much he loves, or, at the very least, really likes Emilia since the first episode. I don't see how it was surprising that he still felt the same even after everything Rem said. His feelings for Emilia and the stupid dying and resetting is the literal reason things are where they are in episode 18. He definitely has not made the best decisions, but do we really expect him to? Rem is an angel, and she's clearly not blind to Subaru's feelings for Emilia, so I don't see an issue. Not accusing anyone here of having an issue, just adding my two cents.

This comment will be long. I need to talk about episode 18. Because it's my favourite episode in season one and the moment that made fall completely in love with this show. Let's take aside the pacing, the dialogue, the music, the voice acting. This episode is put there because WE, like Subaru, suffered for 6-7 episodes to no end, but in the end what Re Zero is always been about is, simply, love. Love in the most simple and pure sense ever. It's easy to forget with how much this show is filled with mystery, politics and horror, but it's always been there. The lap pillow scene, Subaru risking to not come back when he jumps off the cliff to undo Rem's death, the scene with the kids ambitions, the twins holding Subaru's hand in his sleep, the whole Rem arc. If YOU, like Subaru, forgot, episode 18 reminds you what makes Re Zero great. What it does best. Conveying love, in every way possible.

I'm so glad you guys understood Subaru's perspective this interaction and didn't blame him needlessly!!! Although we should feel bad for Rem, Subaru did NOTHING WRONG. He got soooooooooooooo much hate for this when this show was airing in 2016. I remember the outrage on twitter, reddit, the comments section, etc. It was crazy. I think it was partially fueled by the weekly episode drop schedule which made people forget how much Subaru loved Emilia and how little he gave a shit about Rem. There was a lot of recency bias cause it had been over a month since we last saw Subaru and Emilia interact with each in real time. So, I'm happy you didn't shit on Subaru for being loyal to his bae, Emilia.

Agreed, don’t wanna get into spoiler places because they aren’t far enough yet. But people like to use this sole moment in episode 18 to proclaim that Subaru doesn’t love Rem and people hate on him for it or bash Emilia. You gotta have some patience with the guy. Like a lot of people have said you can’t just choose who you love but feelings can change. Subaru up until episode 18 has only seen one girl in that light when Emilia treated him so kindly when he was at his lowest point having just been catapulted into a new world. It’s not surprising that in episode 18 he isn’t fully there with Rem. But once he realizes her feelings for him and how she treats him is not reliant solely on him being the hero and she is someone he can be himself with. Gives him so much freedom that he desperately needed and starts to fall for her. We can see that happen in episode 19 when she can even push him to tears now by being the one person who understands him and believes in him with no caveats.

Yeah Subaru definitely has a crush on Rem, but the anime really didn’t focus on it that much in this season. It’s definitely there but much more in the background. Hard to really explain Subaru’s feelings well enough without his internal monologue from the LN.

A few things to note for this. The reason he doesn’t react to her confession at first is because of something Ange said a few episodes ago. “He doesn’t believe her words”. This is because Subaru truly does believe he is not a hero and everything he has been doing since he came to this new world is fake. Therefore he believes she is in love with a fake version of himself and doesn’t believe she truly knows or loves the “real him”. But when he says “you don’t mind that it’s me?” And she says “I want it to be you, I wouldn’t want it to be anyone else”. He realizes that Rem does know the real him because he has told her his “truth” of who he is. Shes always known that Subaru is someone who is heavily flawed but accepts him, loves him and believes in him because even tho he is flawed he is still the same Hero that saved her from the self hate she held for a decade. Knowing that she truly does love the real him who asked her to run away and told her to her face how weak he really is, yet still chooses to see the good with the bad and loves him anyways. Gives him the will to stand back up and allows himself to start from zero again thanks to her efforts. I don’t feel sad for rem this isn’t spoilers but when they’re under the tree he tells her in the LN “I love Emilia, but when I look at you my heart flutters, you may think of me as a bad person” Episode 18 was a full restart for everything including a new openness to the relationship he has with Rem. It really only Can build from there. But it’s true at that very moment in episode 18 he wanted to be honest with her and give her the sign he has not given up by reclaiming his vow to save Emilia. Such a great couple episodes with more to come.

My favorite part of what Rem did in Ep 18 is that when Subaru starts the conversation he proposes that they run away together, which is literally Rem's fantasy, but she still rejects him. She knows that she wouldn't be satisfied with the 'broken' Subaru that would be willing to run away with her and away from his problems. She is in love with the 'hero' Subaru, and she works the whole episode to bring that persona back to the surface, knowing full well that the 'hero' Subaru will always put Emilia above her.
