2023-12-09 15:04:24 +0000 UTCsantini u should! and while not completely robbing away from the story, but it does bring up some "concepts" earlier than season does like - mana storm - one of the great mabeasts like the whale and the other thing - what actually happened from emilia's perspective which is then heavily used in a certain "test" later in s2 that keeps someone crying. - the idea that "ice magic" isnt really a thing, ice magic is just the lack of heat/fire and fits into puk's s1 definition of 4 "common" magic types and then there's shadow and light on top as more rare options

2023-12-08 12:48:02 +0000 UTCi personally think that its also the connotation. She's the witch of envy yes, and envying something isnt necessarily a negative thing. You can envy those that are successful and ASPIRE from them to work hard and be successful yourself. But "jealousy" has a negative connotation to it, and it's almost used like a derogatory term when talking about the witch of envy by the population.

Also, and idk if the author thought about this when writing the story, but the number 4 is seen as an "evil" or "unlucky" number in Japan/other East Asian countries. Sorta like the number 13 in the US.

2023-12-04 11:53:54 +0000 UTCWell "The Jealous Witch" has been mentioned as an actual thing in this world (where Emilia got the name "Satella" from, right?) and we have had multiple characters comment on the "scent of the Witch" as well as the first scene in this episode where Rem accuses Subaru of being from "the Witch's cult" so I don't see why you should think of it as a metaphor. Seems to me that it's an actual, somewhat "magical," marker that has been left on Subaru.

They probably said witch dragon at some point or misunderstood the story of the dragon and satella during the ram story time, and they are just kinda making fun of it. That's what I thought at least, I could be wrong

He only has knowledge so far that he's been able to revive 3 times and doesn't know if there's a limit, or if it's going to be the 4th one that kills him indefinitely. And considering many video games (which Subaru is clearly familiar with) have 3 lives as a video game lifeline genre, it stands to reason that Subaru is worried that he only has 3 lives per checkpoint, and that's what has him so freaked out in this loop and asks Beatrice to keep him alive in hopes that he gets to the next checkpoint in his mind so he can at least have better chances at getting 3 lives back. That's why this episode ended on the cliff hanger without Subaru waking up, at that point in time we don't know if he will or if he will wake up in limbo or purgatory or back in his world or waking up or something. Him deciding to take the plunge and jump is a literal leap of faith, and his faith is powered by his pure willpower and reason to live, and thereby, his reason to die. And that motive is stated verbatim: "I swear I'm going to save you" which is immediately following the flashbacks of "I swear I'm going to kill you" which is him taking his life into his own hands to save Rem and everyone... Even when he's not sure if he'll be able to loop back, he just hopes for it and knows that his life in that world is either going to end anyway (ram killing him) but also that he doesn't want to live in a world where his friends are dead and he couldn't do anything about it. And so while many reactors were like "bruh just jump and reset come on.", I like that Carlie and Ange pay attention to what Subaru at least thinks, right or wrong, and it's not just that Subaru doesn't enjoy dying, it takes a toll on him and he can't even share that burden with others due to rules of his renewal by death ability but also because he still doesn't know if there's a limit or not, like a cat and 9 lives or an event based trigger that cements that reality when doesn't know what triggers a checkpoint or doesn't

2023-12-04 05:55:40 +0000 UTCNo that is completely wrong. Betty references the scent later on in the episode. It is a very real thing and one of the reasons Rem detests Subaru so much. Ram is not able to sense it so she doesn’t treat him as cruelly.

Also the director’s cut version doesn’t add more important infos. Just some new scenes, updated animations, sound, and soundtrack.

You can watch frozen bond after season 1, there is some information you’ll need before watching season 2.

2023-12-03 19:17:01 +0000 UTCBy far my favourite of the early episodes as it's got everything you ever want in it, the music stings (Straight Bet) and all the scattered hints going on. The one thing I will point out because very few anime only fans get is that Subaru restarted technically 2 times in this episode. First was after he died in the forest with Rem. Second was in bed while trying to tell Emilia about his Return by Death. But unlike the usual variations, this one happens totally at the Witch of Envy's choice and it involves Subaru telling someone about his power. She crushes his heart there and then, killing him straight off and then immediately resetting him back to the moment before he says he can Return by Death. That's why he's so horrified by it, that ghost hand actually crushed his heart and killed him, Subaru felt that and remembers it, it's why he's so scared now about telling someone as he doesn't want to feel that pain again. Oh and pulling on Beako's pigtails and both of their noises is absolutely adorable, I love it!

If you don't understand something it's because it hasn't been explained yet. A couple things you didn't talk about in the discussion is that, apparently, Subaru has this witch's scent on him that some people seem to notice (Beatrice and Rem that we've seen) and that apparently the smell was a big part of why Rem trusted him so little. Try to think about it about Rem's POV. A stranger comes out of thin air, saves Emilia, asks to be a guest at your house, spends the next four days asking questions to everyone, then leaves saying that he's going to the capital (on foot) and you find him spying on the mansion from a cliff. AND he smells like the witch whose name you can't even say in this world. Also, that night Subaru was having nightmares (understandably) and was making a lot of noise, Rem and Ram noticed and decided to hold his hands during the night to calm him. Not gonna go in details about how and why but that was the realization for Subaru. These two don't even know who I am, but saw me suffering and wanted to help. I'm not gonna take the easy route that's going to kill them to save myself.

Ram mercy kills him with her wind magic. Rem can smell the Witch’s scent on Subaru, Ram cannot. After Subaru tells Emilia “Have nothing to do with me.” She visits him two days later because he hasn’t eaten any food and actually feeds him. Emilia mentions that Rem made his food that day more mild so it wouldn’t upset his stomach since he hadn’t been eating.
