Yeah, definitely the comment was complimentary, it's just a horrific translation. It has nothing to do with being "fanatical like" as you said it's an inversion of a common Japanese term to feel incredible. That's why I prefer the other translation which is "demonically inspired" as it's a far closer translation to what the term means than "fanatical like a demon". The Oni thing, it just - to be frank, non-anime fans and newcomers aren't going to know the difference between what an Oni is and what a Yokai is or what an Akuma is or Enma or Kijo. The translators transpose "Oni" with "Demon" for simplicity but it's not simple, a demon is more associated with an Akuma, Enma or Mao. While the mythology around the Oni is that they were either red or blue, had horns and lived in the mountains. That's very close to the Ogre in Western accounts as they were monsters with horns that lived in the mountains. But "Demon" is simpler and easier to understand, it's lazy in my view and it takes away from the viewer and gives false narratives to newcomers.

First of all it's "Onigakaru" (鬼がかる) which is just a play on the expression "Kamigakaru" (神がかる), meaning "to be possesed by a god", or more colloquially, "to be awesome/incredible". "Oni" is also often used colloquially in Japanese to put emphasis on something. Ex. "Oniripu" (鬼リプ), meaning to have a song or video being played on replay/repeat. With that said, I'm fairly certain that Subaru used "Onigakaru" as a compliment. We who have seen this show before knows that it has a double meaning though ;)

2023-11-29 05:49:03 +0000 UTCAnge is right about the Beatrice thing. Subaru woke up the first time in the mansion, wandered around, found Beatrice and passed out because she absorbed his mana. THEN the checkpoint kicked in. You can see this because the first time Subaru wakes up there's noone in his room, but at the checkpoint there are always Rem and Ram. Also love that you're perking up your ears and eyes at a LOT of important details that could go unnoticed. Everything has a purpose and everything gets revisited eventually, don't worry!

For instance this loop shows that Subaru was hidden for a good while in the library with Beako and it's "very" understated, so much so that it is only explained in one line by one character. "Onigakuru" doesn't mean "fanatical like a demon" it's a horrific mistranslation of a lot of things, first "Oni" doesn't mean "Demon" it's more akin to "Ogre" in the West, but "Onigakuru" translates better as "Oni Inspired" it's got to do with Japanese traditions and mythology that will be explained later on (in brief) but the Crunchy subs for this part suck, I sort of know why as they've chosen to attribute Demon with Oni and saying "demonically inspired" sounds more satanic in the censors mind. Oh and currently 17 days Subaru has been in this world (I'll stop soon.)
