There is someone called Mr. Fart in this show? I have to watch this now.

I think the episode was definitely supposed to make you think about whether what Mr. Fart did was right or justified. I think we can all agree that kidnapping kids is bad, but I think the overall message of the episode is positive. are the kids not being "kidnapped" by the academies? what I found most interesting was that Mr. Fart wasn't even trying to send any sort of message. he just wanted the kids to have a couple of hours to be happy.

The reason Carlie has hard time sympathizing is because you have zero idea on just how cut throat and competitive the Korean academic culture is. There's nothing that even remotely compares in the U.S. or Australia for you to even fathom just how brutal it is. To elaborate, you're literally sent to academies starting as early as first grade and you're sent after school to "hakwons" to learn English and high level math. These classes are usually from 5pm until 10 or 11pm, after which they all walk home by themselves. These kids are so deprived of sleep and playtime that they're literally allowed to sleeping during their normal school hours bc parents & teachers understand these kids are more concerned about their after school academies. Suicide rate is off the roof bc kids are struggling with depression and the pressure of having to succeed in their teen years. I know in recent years, we seem to just accept that grown men playing with children is "wrong" but ponder that for a second - isn't that more of a reflection on how rotten we've allowed our society to become that we can't see kind hearted adults playing with children without assuming they're some kind of predators? This episode actually downplayed just how bad kids in Korea have it; the reality is far FAR worse. Parents spend millions on their kids so that they can attend as many "hakwons" as possible, control and monitor their lives, and NO ONE questions how wrong it is.

in korea, the education system and the academic culture is SUPER competitive, even at such a young age. students go to school, and then they go to after school tutoring/studying academies that go untill around 10pm, like they said. iirc, around the time of this episode, there were irl protests and law changes going on in korea to try and prevent this from happening any longer, and this episode got a lot of positive attention in korea
