Explanation of Gojo's technique: His red reversal technique expands space, and the blue one contracts space. There is a Physical Phenomenon called Redshifts, this is when light traveling from distant galaxies are shifting to a longer wavelength, hence they turn to red (the longest wavelength in the visible spectrum). This shifting happens because the Universe is expanding and despite the expansion, light wants to travel at the same speed so it compensates by stretching its wavelength. Think of light as a spring with wheels traveling on a road. The Universe is the road and it is expanding, so in order for the spring vehicle to arrive from point A to point B at its normal pace, it would then need to stretch itself. Consequently, the shortest wavelength is blue. So going back, to the hollow purple technique, I would assume it is a simultaneous expansion and contraction of space. Since matter exists in space, it would mean that the matter caught in the technique would expand and contract simultaneously at a rapid pace. The lightning effects might just be an Anime thing for dramatic purposes. Also, if you guys remember when Gojo first showed his Domain Expansion, he actually warped space to get Yuji and bring him to the Volcano Head Curse spirit.

Remember, the only reason Yuji could afford to go into Mahito's domain is because of the way Idle Transfiguration works. On a side note, Hollow Purple erases anything it touches from existence. So I wouldn't say Gojo wasn't trying at all.
