Hello there, Adepts- this map is the Tropical Beach (30x30), a little stretch of beach with plenty of palms and rocks. And since I thought it looked awfully cheery, your alternate version is a swampy variant, with a yuckier palette, dimmer lighting, and a bit of swamp gas clogging up the air. I also imagine this looks a little jungle-y too, so maybe it could be good for a Tomb of Annihilation campaign!
1. Beach map! This initial sketch was a little light on sand for my taste so I expanded the beach itself a fair bit. I think that was the right move too, it would have looked wrong without lots of sand. Or at least it would have looked like high tide, which isn't exactly what I was imagining when making this map.
Beyond the shore, I wanted this to be a nicely basic map, so I imagined this was a pretty dense jungle island with mostly forest, so I decided to not try to expand the design past that- only trees, rocks, and patchy grass, pleasantly generic and versatile.
2. While I flirted with making new palm trees for this map I eventually decided that drawing new iterations wasn't a good use of my time, especially since they didn't look any better than the old ones I've been using. Instead I drew up some smaller leafy plants to help make the ground a little busier, and also some nice and big jagged rocks to provide some large cover. Not much more here to talk about, simple maps are simple!
3. Ok, I was feeling pretty run-down while making the last map so I had a very hard time coloring it. As I started coloring this map I was feeling much better so I looked back at the Seaside Cove and realized that everything was pretty green-tinted in a way that I didn't totally enjoy. I wanted to try to avoid that this time but I found it harder than expected- either everything gets washed out and pale or overly saturated and kinda greenish. I tried to reduce the amount of green by taking some away from the grass, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that solution. If I end up making more tropical maps I'll have to try some other options, I think.
