Been enjoying these and I’m really looking forward to TNG

Davy Jones

Leonard Nimoy agreed to be in this movie on one condition, that they kill off his character so he doesn't have to keep doing these. He was tired of his career being known only as Spock and didn't believe the movies would be any good anyway. They left it looking hopeful because test audiences hated the ending without it. Since I know you've watched the next one (I have it cued up to play next) I can tell you that after filming this movie he enjoyed it so much that he changed his mind and that's why they bring him back.

Kevin Bartelen

The first 6 movies are TNG cast, but ALL of TNG happens after them, even though they are released congruently. the last 3 movies are TNG movies

Kevin Bartelen

This is one of my top 5 favorite movies and by far the best Star Trek movie. But even outside of being a Star Trek fan, this is a great film. A revenge story put inside what's basically a submarine war movie. AND THE LINES. Ricardo Montalban is so fucking good as Khan - so over the top and Shakespearian. Honestly I feel like this is also Peak Shatner. Between the "KHAAAAN" and the way he breaks down a little during the funeral, this really is probably his best acting work.

Lazy Boy Stays Up Late Watching Video Tapes

I would hope you've learned to trust nothing Khan says. That is all.

Loved the reaction, haven't watched this in long time, just became aware that you are only watching up to ST4 then doing TNG S1&2 which aired in 1986 & 1987, ST5 was in 1988 I believe. I would prefer & recommend you guys finish the TOS movies before starting TNG but it is your channel & your prerogative, ST2,3 & 4 are a trilogy anyway. ST5 is its own thing & the weakest of the movies even though I still enjoy it. ST6 is really good and a great send off for the OG crew, only thing is TNG S1 & 2 are not that great (I'm being kind) in my opinion, S3 is when TNG became a hit, I guess you will just have to sludge your way through it until you get to S3. Also, I cant remember if you guys said you are doing DS9 & Voyager as well, eventually? I would just be happy for TNG but damn if you guys can do DS9 & Voyager as well?!, oh boy oh boy!

As a kid, this movie was actually what got me into Star Trek. I was heavily into Star Wars first, but when I first watched this, I loved it. Since, at the time, The Original Series wasn't readily available nor easily accessible, I only really got to watch the movies after this one, and that's how I fell in love with Spock, and this crew. I guess it's funny that I mainly knew this crew as old people, but, in retrospect, it made sense because I used to only think of astronauts as old people. Anyway, when The Next Generation came out, I watched that immediately and they became my Star Trek crew, if only because they hung around the longest, running-time-wise.

sarCC

sorry what did i do? genuinely want to know, if there was a particular moment or thing i said.

George Simone

I wish George would sometimes let the moment hang...

Joanthan Skidmore

God I love Ricardo Montalban. Pecs for days!

Patrick

yes that is correct, turns out when Prime streaming lists something as Directors Cut, it doesnt always mean it is. They just mislabeled it.

George Simone

FYI. I do not believe you were watching the directors cut, because I kept having to resync when my version had scenes yours did not. Also, in the directors cut it points out that the young cadet who died was Scotty's nephew, which is why he was so upset.

Vwlss Nvwls

The OG Star Trek movies do reuse some sequences, but I do not hold it against them, because I am sure their budgets were not that great. Plus, they are just fantastic movies.

Vwlss Nvwls

yes, we are doing them in release order. so the first 4 movies, then TNG for a couple of seasons, then the remaining 2 as they were released back then. this also helps to break up the extensively long TNG run a little too.

George Simone

George, you said in your intro you were doing the first FOUR movies before starting TNG, but there are SIX. I know number five is largely considered bad, but the last one "Undiscovered Country" is great, and a great ending to a legacy. I really hope you at least watch this one, though you really should watch them all.

Vwlss Nvwls

Shatner led his own TV series from 1982–1986, “T. J. Hooker” which was a police drama and was a supporting actor in “Boston Legal” from 2004 to 2008, for which he won an 2005 Outstanding Supporting Actor in A Drama Series.

REDR58

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is modeled after Waiting for Godot. It's just Bones and Kirk talking; Spock never shows up.

SpankTheMonk

So now, when you re-watch Deadpool and Wolverine, you will understand Deadpool's reference to Kirk and Spock, which was to Spock's death in this movie!

Cory Garron

Life can only grow from the matter that was there according to Dr. Marcus' little PowerPoint presentation...so it would eventually stop and either maintain homeostasis or begin dying. Shatner will go on to star in a lot of stuff back in the day....I loved him in an episode of Columbo(detective show) where he was trying to get away with murder and trick Columbo.

Nate Terry

I’ve never seen this movie. I haven’t seen the show because my head canon is always watching the movies. I’m just strolling along with you guys watching the classic TOS for the first time. But I’ve seen all TNG movies and I have some favorites from that series.

FranciscoGios

I come for the movies. I stay for the cat ASMR.

* During production, it was leaked that Spock would die in the next movie. To deal with it, Nick Meyer (director and uncredited writer of the final shooting script) decided to do a fake-out at the beginning of the movie with the training scene -- everybody pretend dies so that the audience would think the rumor was wrong. * The director, Nick Meyer, has a cameo starting at 01:19:29 (theatrical) to 01:19:49. He's at the end of the torpedo conveyor belt holding on the hand rail and looking around nervously like he doesn't know what to do. * As much as possible, ST2 reuses film from the ST:TMP to save money. Box Office Mojo: ST1: about $35M ($83 WW) but ST2 was only $11M ($80M WW). Of course, existing sets were also used (though redressed) as much as possible. * The new Exec Prod was from the TV division at Paramount (Harve Bennett) and was brought in to cut costs. * ILM changed the paint job of the original Enterprise ST:TMP refit model (removed the pearlescent paint) because it reflected the blue screen and caused filming issues * Btw, this is the theatrical cut (1:53), not the director's cut (1:56).

Ron

Imagine how we felt when this came out! LOL I can't wait for you two to see Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock. I would recommend not looking up the cast for the 3rd movie. Just go in and enjoy! I really liked the uniforms in this. They do stick with them for the other movies. On but one other thing, they did keep the color coding. In the strap on the right shoulder, but it's a combination of color and the pin rank insignia.

DM DC

I'm so glad you have been able to go on this voyage without somebody spoiling the ending. Seeing your reaction to Spock's death was truly special.

Kevin Knadle

What's the Star Trek version of a Bond girl? A Mudd's Woman.

Gary Fixler

Yeah, but didn't he later write a book called "I Am Spock"?

KnittingHaven

theres ppl that laughed??? wtf lol. who did that? i gotta go see this disaster

robodong

All TOS movies take place before TNG except Generations which is an TOS/TNG crossover.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Glad you guys didn't burst out laughing during Spock's funeral, like some reacters out there...

JD Nevesytrof

I 100% agree that all TOS movies are best reacted to before TNG. There is no event significance of any kind to go by release timeline.

Techie (JSC)

Great reaction! Very emotional there near the end. 😢 This one is probably my favorite of all the TOS cast movies. Simone, your cat purring into the microphone at 33:25 and after is just… well purr-fect! Okay, sorry for that... but very ASMR. 🐱

Major Peril

Personally I would watch movies 1-6, then do TNG series from 1987 as there is almost no cross-over save maybe one minor character I don't even remember the name of, then after watching TNG, watch movie 7 which involves aspects of both TOS & TNG. I'm just thinking G&S might get into TNG and then go back to movies 5&6 and it feel disjointed. Again, just my opinion.

Odd Thomas

How very Kirk that his last words about Spock in his eulogy is an insult. 😄

Opti_Frog

Like a lot of actors, Shatner improves once he gets older. I think some of that life experience plays into it. And just acting experience, too, I guess.

Joe Concepts

yeah Nimoy only comes back because they let him direct the next movie. Nimoy had even written a book called “I Am Not Spock” in the 70s and was pretty over playing the character at the time.

djKENTO

Here's one of those times it's weird to hear all the comments and speculation in the reaction, and be able to say anything about them. Confirming you're right or wrong about anything would be spoiler!

Joe Concepts

It's great but I like Meyer's other Trek film, Undiscovered Country, more (It was the first Trek I saw on the big screen). 4 and 6 are my favourite OG movies.

Odd Thomas

And, sorry, here is the earlier scene identifying Preston as Scotty’s nephew at 1:58: https://youtu.be/D_s4ULn4yw8?si=YGVpYmIyqwNEp6yQ (There are a number of other cuts and changes in this video)

REDR58

Simone and George, here is the scene you missed out on thanks to the wrong information on the version you saw on Amazon Prime showing the death of Scott’s nephew: https://youtu.be/ym--nO05h14?si=Ecx5zwGz4DZC9iFq

REDR58

The descriptions of movies on Amazon Prime are simply wrong sometimes, identifying movies as the Director’s Cut or whatever when they are not. Prime is not reliable when it comes to things like that, unfortunately.

REDR58

Great reaction. Spock’s death scene is one of the greatest of all time and is so impactful. On another note, please please please watch “Sinners” asap. now that it is out on streaming it will be such a good reaction for yall. It is incredible and one of the best movies of 2025 by far. I think you both will love it, and TBH I am looking forward to your reaction the most of any reactors.

Emptysea93

Been waiting for this one since you started TOS, lessse go!

Tomas

Not the director's cut. Director's cut only adds three minutes. It doesn't add much to the story, but it would have explained why Scotty was so emotional over that ensign's death. (He was Scotty's nephew). Lukily I have access to both versions of this one and the runtime you list told me it was the theatrical cut. While cast members like William Shatner kept acting (Miss Congeniality, TJ Hooker, Boston Legal, etc), Leonard Nimoy made a transition to directing. He directed Star Trek 3 and 4. He still took on some acting jobs. Mostly he was doing voice work and documentary narration, but there were some live action roles on TV and film (including joining the cast of the 2000s sci fi show, Fringe)

D. T. Nelson

Yeah, this is why I was kind of hoping they would do all 6 ToS movies before TNG. Star Trek VI is a great ending to the original series and the characters.

Brandon

I'm glad neither of you knew the ending to this one going in. It's one of those pop culture things that's hard to avoid. At the time even casual viewers who only watched occasional reruns were hit hard by Spock's death. My Dad being one of them. While being a direct sequel to Space Seed, it also calls back to Balance of Terror, which is another of ToS best episodes. Kirk goes head to head with a Romulan Commander and much like in that episode, Kirk and Khan never meet face to face. I love how hard the movie leans into Kirk and Khan being the same, but opposite. We don't get much of it, but the reflection of Khan's relationship with his second in command Joachim with that of Kirk and Spock is one of my favourite parts of the movie. Khan stubbornly never listens to any of the advice that would have saved his life. Kirk can be stubborn too, but he listens to his advisors. To what George was asking at the start: TNG takes place around 75-80 years after the last of the ToS films. The first Trek film didn't make the cash they were hoping for, so Paramount sidelined Gene Roddenberry. They blamed it on the headier sci-fi concept and slower pace that he pushed for. All Trek films have been more action focused ever since. Roddenberry went on to create TNG in 87 where he had a lot more creative control. You could say that the ToS movies and TNG operated like two separate departments within the same company.

Brandon

Star Trek Vi would come after season 4 and around 100 episodes of TNG.

Companion to my other post for George and Simone with NO SPOLIERS: in TOS the Earth has dictators who are genetically engineered and divide up the Earth in the 1990s. Khan is one of them. There is a nuclear war in the 2030s and Earth rebuilds. Zephram Cochrane who you saw in the TOS episode with the female cloud creature who merges with the dying female diplomat invents Warp Drive in the 2060s and the Vulcans seeing Earth can travel faster than light opens relations. The Federation is formed in 2161. TOS takes place a hundred years later in 2266-2269. This movie and other TOS movies take place in 2280s or so. TNG takes place in the EARLY 2370s. DS9 and Voyager are in the LATE 2370s. Enterprise is a PREQUEL set in the 2150s showing early space adventures. All the OTHER spinoffs have varying dates some Just BEFORE TOS and others AFTER TNG/DS9/Voyager

George and Simone: TOS aired in 1966-1969 and was set 300 years in the future 2266-2269. TNG is set 100 years after TOS in the 2370s, Deep Space 9 and Voyager respect the airing chronology by taking place a few years later in the LATE 2370s. The TNG moviezs respect the real chronology in that they were filmed in the late 1980s so they were supposed to take place in the 2280s

Actuarial Lurker

Are you sure this is director's cut? My versions show theatrical runtime at 113 minutes (01:53), whereas director's cut is 116 minutes.

Ricardo Montalban. Lost to Captain Kirk and Enrico Pallazzo. What a legend. Fantastic movie, even for a non-hardcore Trekkie, who only enjoys (most of) the movies. Looking forward to the next two!

Saw these posts pop up just now, and said "Wrath of Khan, yay!" and then realized it sounded like I said "Wrath of Kanye."
