Sucker Punch-Drunk

Wil and Penelope! Been a long time since we've seen Wil. Sometimes a character will just sort of fall by the wayside and I don't pick them up for a while, and my focus shifts elsewhere and suddenly it's been 5 years and I haven't drawn a comic about them and oh my god where did the time go. Maybe we'll see Wil again in the future! Or maybe not. It's not like there are 250 different characters in the comic and more being added all the time like some kind of Fire Emblem But For Goobers. Wait shit now I actually want to play that game.

As someone who was frequently The Most Drunk Dude At The Party, I gotta say I don't miss it at all. Nor do I miss hangovers, or spending money on booze, or all the other bad parts of drinking too much. And one of the NICE parts about "where does the time go" is eventually you do the math and realize you've been sober for 11 years without even thinking about it. Sobriety is pretty cool imho.

Heading to Europe for the holidays tomorrow. Gonna spend some time there doing some actual writing and slowly easing back into making comics. I can tell this break is doing me good because I'm looking forward to getting back to work!

I was also That Dude, and feel much the same as you. I'd also append that, if you have someone in your life who likes to remind you of that time when you were That Dude, they either don't understand the difference between "cute if somewhat embarrassing story" and "story that becomes more irrelevant with every year that you're sober and have more people in your life that didn't know you then", or they absolutely do understand, and want to break up the friendship or nodding acquaintanceship or whatever it is without being the one to formally break it up. Or maybe both! People are strange.

Halloween Jack

Have fun and travel safely!

Hugh Eckert

Retiring in two and a half months. Can't wait!

Hugh Eckert

Good thinking, that. I have long suspected that the whole planet is kept from wobbling -- I mean, look at the continents, will ya? -- by a subsurface mountain of osmiridium somewhere under the far south Pacific. (The End will come when someone finds it begins large-scale mining.)

Ursus Ridens

It's nice to see the mention of Penelope not drinking without it being overly dwelt on. It would be nice if she hung out with the main cast more often so that we could see her interact more in social situations and get her take on things. I hope she and Wil are still doing well.

enchantedsleeper

Congratulations on the 11 years. "Revisit one old character" ought to be the new "Steve eats cereal" Friday cliffhanger strip.

Greg Morrow

Thanks! I've kept a couple of collections of links (to which I just added today what I presume is the appearance in the background of Dave and Helen from the old webcomic Narbonic https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=543), one being solely dedicated to the Faybles timeline from that foreshadowing strip up until "FRIGGIN FINALLY" https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3744

Mark

Wow! That is an amazing callback! BookBeard Quality, for sure! Also, go Pintsize, foreseeing the future! Wonder what else she will come to have foreseen!

legobil

Also, consider how new Jephs β€œnew” artstyle is. A few years and a few thousand comics at least.

legobil

A true low point in Hanners floof-spectra. Otherwise a brilliant strip! Especially by Tai.

legobil

I wasn't thinking of him hooking up with anyone still in the comic so much as just properly concluding his relationship with Faye, although it would be amusing if he was attached to one of the many characters who have also been dropped. Gabby perhaps? Not Padma, who he actually knew, but she got engaged to some 'tech bro'.

Mark

Awww.

Ursus Ridens

A temporary appointment as Bad Poet in Residence. Sounds like something that Cubetown would do.

Ursus Ridens

Nah, bring 'im back, for some _really_ interesting and shall we say, delicate interactions as he adjusts to the Faye + Bubbles. And then, who knows? Angus + [Anh (unlikely) | Willow (mebbe?) | Ayo (no, wait -- too young) | Brun (he should be so lucky) | Emily (??) | Roko (now, _there's_ a challenge) | ......aha -- Sara (femina ex allosauro) ] 4EVA!

Ursus Ridens

Congratulations!

Marcus Clark

In all of these I'm like "wait how are all these new characters in such an old art style?" And I realise I should probably start counting characters other than Marten Dora and Faye as "old"

Bev Rogers

It's even more fun when a bunch of people all sober decide to go sans clothes for at least half a day. It helps a lot of people get over ridiculous social values permanently IME.

Carrie

Congratulations on being sober for 11+ years! It's only 1Β½ for me. Great comic for lol memories. πŸ˜…πŸ˜πŸ™ƒ

Carrie

Happy holidays! Sounds like a great way to enjoy your vacation. Hope you have a great trip!

Dave Stebbins

Ok, but the comic really somewhat follows life in the aspect of people moving in and out of our lives. I have friends (acquaintances) who I have not spoken to, not because of any particular reason except we've fallen out of touch a bit. I am sure it would be nice to catch up.

Phil Allison

Speaking of characters that have just disappeared, a brief return of Mr Angus McPhee would be nice just to obtain some closure. Besides. he could see that his and Pintsize's wishes had been granted! https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2262

Mark

Have an amazing vacay! I’m enjoying the throwback comics - my hubby has been a fan since early on and he got me into the comic a couple of years ago. It’s nice to see the earlier ones and then he gives me more background info.

Spazzzen

Have fun in Europe! I'm going to Canada with my family, so the continental weights should stay balanced, at least.

Totem Pole

Millefeuille sits politely at the end of the bar, watching Brun and yearning :)

Stephen Wells

If you happen to come to San Sebastian, Spain, look me up! I know all the good eating spots! I've been a reader/fan since almost the beginning (I can't remember exactly when)...enjoy your vacation!

Liam Barksdale

Ooooh, where in Europe are you holidaying? That's lovely πŸ₯°

enchantedsleeper

The way I would play the crap out of Fire Emblem but for Goobers. I am so here for a QC x FE crossover

Amanda Smith

Sober is great. It’s like, eye-opening. You say, β€œI don’t want to be like that anymore,” and the world looks just a little different. The sucker rule viols stand out, you’re happy to not be hungover ever, and all the other stuff you just said. I’ll add in my experience that it outs the enablers as well. I work with a couple enthusiasts who equate buying rounds to being popular. Like, a lot of rounds. One new sober coworker came in, hints at some horror stories, but enabler is still like, β€œYeah, but I bet if we got one in you, you’d be so fun!” πŸ™„

will davison

Have fun storming the castle!

MarRose

Eh, you'll get over the feeling.

ValdVin

...when the site actually works that is.

Shannon Woodbury

Yeah, ditto. It does exactly the same for me. (On the plus side now we know where Yay may be hiding out πŸ™‚)

Shannon Woodbury

@DaleNielsen: you are correct. I replied too fast.

Carl Fink

The ads come up immediately with both of the First/Previous/Next... lines. Then a place marker icon for the comic graphic between the lines. If I refresh, I get the Cloudflare "It's not our fault" screen. If I refresh again, I get the complete page -- at varying speeds. However - it seems to be OK today - touch wood! [Pats top of head]

Charles Hirst

...or is it just the best surprise fourth-wall break ever? πŸ˜‚ Moral here being, never write an all-powerful AI hacker character out of your storyline.... You just might piss off their real-life big brother πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Shannon Woodbury

Now I’m seeing Wil as a contractor they bring to Cubetown for special occasions. He came heavily recommended by a friendly local Spider bot.

Cory Thorp

I'll be honest, I had a lot of fun times (and more than a couple really bad times) when I used to drink regularly, but they are very firmly in my past now. I don't regret those days, but I don't really miss them either.

William Cole

It responds very slowly for me lately. Usually the comic will appear eventually, but it takes a long time.

jonesnori

Huh! JJ writes Yay out of QU, and the whole site has been having recurrent 522 and 404 errors ever since... Coincidence?? πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

Shannon Woodbury

Holy cuuute Marigold hair!

Graydon Armstrong

I spent the weekend hitting the Random Button, trying to see if one I got would be the one Jeph chose for today. I lost. Not even close.

Doc Gumby

I don't think it's just Australia. I just checked and the site does seem quite unhappy. πŸ€”

Drazi

Congratulations, Jeph: ten years for me, last September. It's weird being sober amongst our national bullshit.

James Roy

Damn, this makes me miss college...

Yelling Bird

Siiigghhh... 60 days straight now the QC site has been down now for my ISP, and only intermittently available on other services. Spoken to my ISP ad-nauseum and they keep saying it's the site's problem, not theirs. Maybe JJ could do a storyline about Yay coping with her anxiety by relocating to Australia and f****ing with it's Cloudflare servers 😭😭😭

Shannon Woodbury

I drink, but only "the good stuff". The moment it becomes "only alcohol", my inner cheap-assed bastard shouts, "I can't afford to waste this stuff!". Yes, I love yanking my own leash. And I'm VERY glad I can easily resist buying "the cheap stuff".

BobC

I do drink sometimes, but I've never been drunk. Stuff like this just reinforces that decision. Same reason I've never gotten high. I say enough ill-conceived shit when sober that I'm paranoid about losing what little brain/mouth filter I do have.

Ian Dunbar

Hanners is NOT a librarian!

Dale Nielsen

The only times I have been the most drunk or high person in the room was always unpleasant. A couple years ago I went to a friend's home and she was offering weed gummies. She asked, I accepted. She asked if I "wanted to get a buzz or get fucked up" and for some reason I selected the second option. When she asked if I was sure, I doubled down with the "Sometimes I just want to go to space" line from Tai. Everyone thought that was quite funny, but a hour later I was uncomfortably high and having a hard time with people's names. I did not enjoy space.

SilverbackRon

She's a librarian. You expect a variegated vocabulary.

Carl Fink

This seems like a worthy 2025 New Year's resolution!

SilverbackRon

You know, in my head I still think of Marigold and Tai as "newer" characters, and then you hit me with a comic featuring them from *14 years ago.*

Rob Vary

Just do a party scene at the Horrible Revelation, and you get Eliot, Wil, and Brun in all at once. (Brun was only a bar back, but I assume she got promoted to bartender after one of the others suffered a freak harpoon accident.)

Captain Button

I've only been really drunk once, and really hung over once. Drinking is borrowing fun like borrowing money on a credit card, and the interest rate is much too high.

Captain Button

Basically, removing clothes is Tai's go-to reaction to almost any social situation. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1247 https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1611 https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1792 https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1915

BookBeard

I learned a new to me word. β€œInured”.

Howard J.

We need more half-naked characters. Or fully naked, I'm not picky.

Anthony Gaglianese

i dont dislike alcohol, but my body likes to burn things off fast, so the amount i would have to spend to maintain a good buzz from anything that didnt taste like rocket fuel would simply be a bad trade. getting drunk just isn't THAT fun

Logan Nix

I'm gay for this entire couch situation in the last panel

Fart Captor

I've been what I guess would qualify as drunk exactly two times in my life and I did not enjoy it. I don't like feeling like I don't have control. A beer or a small glass of wine is plenty for me, just a slightly pleasant warm buzz (although not really worth it these days because my allergies all flare up in protest)

djellafine

It would probably be among my more mortifying experiences if I reliably remembered what happened. On one occasion, I got an entire hotel full of people mad at me, and woke up to a hotel bathtub full of broken glass and a sore jaw. To this day I have never gotten the full story (nor ever gotten that drunk since). The hotel it happened in (Philadelphia "Adam's Mark") no longer exists. I'm pretty sure that's not because of me, but, just *pretty* sure.

Doug DeJulio

This is also me, my brain is always trying to do the whole analysis mode thing about everything always (thanks autism, it's great a lot of the time, but always?), and weed tends to leave the analysis mode active, but make it not work correctly. Ethanol switches off the analysis mode for the most part, and I tend to get a buzz in that first hour, and then simply maintain that buzz for the evening. If I could just disconnect the analysis mode part of my brain any other way, that'd be great, but it seems like it's the only way I can, and yeah, it's self medicating, but it's in moderation, a couple times a week at most, and overall keeps me sane in... you know... *gestures vaguely at everything* this.

Ohh Crap Guy

Being the drunkest person in the room has always ranked among the most mortifying experiences of my life. I'm very glad to be at a point in my life where I don't feel the need to do that anymore. Nowadays I maybe have one or two drinks with friends over dinner, on the rare occasions when I don't then have to drive home. I don't remember the last time I was genuinely drunk, and you know what? I love that for me!

Cas Wanden

Have fun storming some castles! And congrats on 11 years.

Sean Kinlin

Just don’t add crossover characters from any of David Willis comics in your FE game. The voice overs would only be in Korean.

Miyaa

Congrats!

Bill Rockenbeck

You could always draw from Europe. I've heard Switzerland is nice.

Ben R

I'll be retired in 7 months and work is conspiring to really make me look forward to it.

Mer W

I've always thought being drunk was overrated. I only drink when I'm out with friends, and even then I prefer to maintain a light buzz, just enough to make the overanalyzing parts of my brain shut the hell up without making me stupid.

BookBeard

Yay! Have fun in Europe Jeph!

Lyman Green

Congratulations on 11 years!

Mer W

I'm just amazed how long this comic has gone on. I've been reading since maybe 06 or 07, my junior year of college, and some of these panels I feel like I read a few months ago

DonnieRamesJio

I get the " I can tell this break is doing me good because I'm looking forward to getting back to work!" I'm a teacher. My favorite times of the year are when the students leave and when they come back.

Mark Brehob

Lucky. I got another 20 more years.

Nikki

I retired and now I never have to read work emails again.

Rich Holmes

Fire emblem with QC characters would be extremely something I would buy and play

Samuel Fout

As someone who had been sober for coming up to six years, I can concur with not missing all those parts of drinking you mentioned and also time flying by. Like WTF. Also, I do miss Penelope and Will! I hope they show up again soon.

Matthew Rose

Whew, I've been reading this comic a long time. Jeph, your sobriety was one of the inspirations for my own. Just passed 7 year.

Gene

dudes literally been doing it for as long as I've been alive lmao, it's good to see him take a break

Dave, Duke of Fridges

It seems like every time I've been away from work long enough to think "huh, it might be nice to get back to work," I'm instantly proven wrong when I read my emails.

Nikki

Here's to another 11 years - you're doing great!

Jon K

I'm glad you're break is doing you good, I was honestly worried that you've been doing this almost as long as I've been alive without any major break that wasn't health related. Enjoy the trip dude!

John Pojar

@Brian Truth

Not that Patrick Foltz

I feel you. I spent far too much time being the drunkest person in the room. Fuck ever doing that again.

Dave, Duke of Fridges

Have a blast in Europe!

Shawn K. Younkin

@Jeph Jacques So are we!

Not that Patrick Foltz

Fire Emblem for Goobers is also known as Fire Emblem
