2024-06-30 20:26:50 +0000 UTCOh my- the Paul Revere song just gets me! I live off of a large road called County Line, on a neighborhood street called Paul Revere Drive. (Our neighborhood streets are all named for American Revolutionary era "patriots" Paul Revere, Nathan Hale, Ben Franklin etc.) Bonnie was asking what the county line was-- in most US states, there are counties, which are governmental sections of a state- each county has an elected sheriff (lawman) and representatives elected to go to the state legislative body to make decisions about laws for the state. A county line is where one county meets another, sometimes there will be roads that make up the county line, so one side of the street will be County A, and the other side of the street will be County B. I think Noah is saying, once he sees the marker that says "entering county c", he knows how many mailboxes it will be to the turn for his house. Some cities/states (New York City, for example) have boroughs, which can be similar to counties in that they are a way to divide up the city or state for the purpose of taxes, representation, etc. Like the county I live in has sales taxes of 2.5%, but inside the city limits (which is also inside the county) there is another 5% sales taxes added (most of the city taxes go towards schools in our city, for example), plus we also have another 2.5% of each purchase that goes to the state, so in my city our sales tax is 10%-- the money is collected by the business we are purchasing from, then they send the correct percentage to each entity they are inside of. [Like, I can get gasoline for my car in my county just outside of my city and sales tax would be 5%, but if I purchase it inside my city the tax would be 10%- but i actually prefer to pay the higher tax so that the schools in my town get more money, so I usually get gasoline inside my city.]

I always interpreted it in a sarcastic/passive-aggressive way, but I love the positive spin your friend saw it as, it makes a lot of sense. I felt for Bonny during Call Your Mom, it's definitely one for when you need a good cry!

But it's better right? So why are you complaining? I love that y'all are seeing a more positive message in it. As someone on anti depresents I think: "forgot how to cry" is a nod to how they kinda like you feel numb but it's better than where you were before you started meds. "who am I to complain" for me is very - shit was so fucked, I was in such a dark place, I have already bothered people enough and been a burden, I am better so who am I to complain about these side effects. Very "it's what I deserve for failing and being mentally ill". Okay sorry that got a bit to real. But I think you know what I mean??? Northern Attitude, Growing Sideways, and No Complaints girlies are 10000% the same girlies

It's obviously a quote from the song, where the narrator is talking about alerting this person's family to their crisis, but I also feel like there's a meta interpretation where by choosing that specific line for the title Noah is saying "If you feel like this, please call your mom, please reach out to someone who loves you."

The one thing I will say though...on the final fathom there, re: he doesn't resolve his home town stuff, he actually does a really awesome homage to his home town on the final song, "View Between Villages Extended." To actually pull in interviews with older people from his town and why they love it does provide a sense of peace with his village. There's an extra verse for some contraction, but ultimately it seems more at peace with the town.

For anything and everything. I go months on end without a single tear. It’s good in the sense that I don’t suffer all the time, but meds do make you numb. It takes a lot for me to shed a tear now.

2023-10-11 00:53:32 +0000 UTCAlso I think No Complaints has a lot of meanings and interpretations, but Noah did confirm as well that it was about him struggling writing music for the deluxe tracks since the standard version did so well. The “ I saw the end it looked just like the middle. Got a paper, and pen and a page with no space.” Was when he was not taking the medication. He confirmed it was easier for him to write songs when he wasn’t on his medication because he could feel more. But he also was more depressed when he wasn’t taking medication. Then the “ filled the hole in my head with prescription medication, then forgot how to cry. Who am I to complain?” Would be after he started taking medication again. now he’s struggling to write but he’s doing better mentally because he’s on the medication. He talked about how he’s on the medication to help him do better but at the same time it’s harder for him to write. he doesn’t know which ones better and which ones worse.. but I still think this song has so many layers. Every time I listen to this album, I discover something new

He opened for Noah on some of his tour dates and has been among my faves for awhile because of his superior songwriting (he also happens to be Kacey Musgraves's ex-husband). His last 2 albums, Search and Destroy and The Weakness are my favorites.

2023-10-10 15:13:07 +0000 UTCFor me, I feel like no complaints is talking about finally addressing his depression and getting on medication… it makes things better “the weight of the world ain’t so bad… I can finally eat and sleep… etc.”, but antidepressants also dampen all your emotions… “I forgot how to cry… made the news boring and my rage distant” he now feels like he can’t complain because his crisis moment is over but the numbness of the medication has left him feeling sort of like a shell of a human. I feel like “I saw the end it looks just like the middle” is saying: I got better! I did the work and went to therapy, got medication and so on, but it sort of is just like when I was in the thick of it. The pain is still there it’s just leaving me differently. So the “who am I to complain” sort of feels like… I’m still alive aren’t I? Isn’t that “the end” goal? To be healthy and alive? But turns out I still feel pretty bad (like when I was in “the middle) just in a different way. He sort of addresses it again in you’re gonna go far. “Who the hell likes living just to die”.

It sounds like the perspective of the younger sibling: ‘and while I clean shit up in the yard, you’ll be far far from here’ understanding why the older sibling had to leave, giving them permission and forgiving them for leaving: ‘we ain’t angry at you love’.

Taylor is my blood and soul and usually even with great albums, I listen to them once through AND i love them but I never gravitate towards listening to them on a normal daily basis, like with Taylors music. For example I looooved guts but not once have I listened to it fully through again. But man this album changed me!!!! Im not able to losten to anything else, not even Taylor, its like I need it in my bloodstream to survive. Idk whats happening but my god what a masterpiece. You try everything in your power to ease the pain with things (writing, drinking, crying…) but sometimes you’re just hormonally so off that you need medications. And when you first start, you actually don’t feel anything (what he said about rain feeling different, news being boring and rage distant) so you think it’s the end. But actually you’re just numb from meds and your problems are still here. And finally you can do normal things that depression made impossible (eat, fall asleep) but it’s still depression and pain is still there. So why complain? You’re not crying anymore and can eat and fall asleep…. But the reality is that you’re just numb.

Noah actually tweeted saying that Your Needs, My Needs and You’re Gonna Go Far are the same story with different endings so I will let you fathom that. For me, No Complaints is about his personal conflicted feelings with being on antidepressants and them making him feel numb. Like, yes I can finally eat and fall asleep but I can’t cry anymore and the news is boring and I don’t feel anything but it’s FINE fine fine. Other people are feeling suicidal still and haven’t been able to get help so I guess I can’t complain. Less of a happy song and more of a processing of nuanced feelings and being grateful he’s not chronically depressed but still missing those other human feelings he doesn’t have access to anymore. Just my thoughts on it as a psychologist! :) 💕

When he said the parts about how he forgot how to cry it immediately made me think of how antidepressants can really numb you out and make you feel kind of wrapped in cotton or something. Like pain doesn’t touch you in the same way but nothing else does either. As someone who’s been on a number of antidepressants over the course of many years I instantly recognized that feeling. And the middle looking just like the end definitely brings to mind the way I feel about my depression and thinking about being on these meds for the rest of my life and wondering is this really as good as it gets? Like they work for a while then they don’t do I have to up my dose or switch to a new one and it seems like this awful never ending merry go round. But you keep trying and hanging in there hoping one day maybe it won’t be so bad.

My personal interpretation (heavily influenced by my relationship with my own depression) was that Noah did all the steps, he went to therapy, he got meds, he has some coping mechanisms, but he’s still depressed (the end looking like the middle). He knows so many people have it worse and he was able to do all the steps he did, so who is he to complain even if he doesn’t feel any different. I take Zoloft (the antidepressant medicine mentioned in Your Needs, My Needs) and it can sometimes make you feel like you have no feelings at all, like you’re kind of a shell of a person. The lines about forgetting how to cry and rage being distant and his pain being different really reminded me of that feeling. Amazing reaction, thank you for giving it to us!

So he's saying he's not so depressed anymore and he can't really complain because it's not as bad as it was, but at the same time all of his emotions and passion and rage feel distant which has it's own challenges. Love you guys so so much!
