Evermore Zane Lowe Interview - Discussion

Comments

omg this is so much tea watching after ttpd and everything else that has happened! Major refathomings of Evermore! ! Her saying that Coney Island is about "a place that was once all thills and electricity and magic and now the lights are out and you are looking at it thinking 'what did I do'" (at 1:31:40 in video). WHATTT

Rachel Teater

Hi 😊 I just found out that Taylor did an interview with Zane Lowe during the Lover era. I had no idea! I’m mentioning it here in case you didn’t know either😊 xx

Marina

I’m watching this today in Dec 2024 and dying at Bonny saying “the midnights tour….i mean eras tour”

Brendy 🎀

Came here to say this! “Catching your death” is a common phrase here in Canada. It basically just means that it’s so cold that you’ll get sick if you’re out too long.

Breezy Bumbles

Yes! Like once she saw him she became the Mastermind.

Breezy Bumbles

Wild that you said after 2 re-recordings we will need TS11, and that happened! Speak Now and 1989!

Erin McGregor

what’s awful is she wanted to make it better and easier for artists to own their catalog, instead she kinda made it worse since record labels are starting to prevent artists to re-record their catalogs. i must be so awful for her to know that

Kamis

not you saying it’s impossible for her to record a new album in 2023 when we got ttpd a year later 😭😭😭

Kamis

Rightttttt! I have no idea how she stayed with him

Erin

there is so much to fathom rewatching this before ttpd

Izzzy Federgreen

There is a fan on the shelf to Taylor's left side-- Easter Egg for her fan she carried to the Grammys in 2024?? (Haha)

Kelly Prang

The Invisible String/Mastermind thing- I always thought the Invisible String was like drawing them together, then once they were in the same room at the same time Taylor's Mastermind schemed them into a relationship?

Kelly Prang

My heart hurts 🥲😭😆

BREANNA BELL

And we are still waiting for Rep 😂

Sherilyn

i thereby declare that we have to stop hating on ME! as a fandom. i rest my case

Georgi Varavko

GUYS! I am having a moment with Evermore lately (again), and it just occurred to me... how about you re-fathom this interview? after all the context that we got after midnights, I feel like the reason she doesn't talk about it that much is just because her and Joe were not in a good place and she was trying to get past it....

Eirini

Yall's mood and vibe on this just 🤌 Also Zane is one of the best journalists out there today!...and Emily I totally feel you on her lack of connection with Evermore which is undoubtedly in my opinion, one of the most exquisite and profound pieces of pure poetry/artistry I've witnessed come out in my lifetime. There were a lot of collaborative efforts on it though including Joe and maybe it just wasn't a great experience making it as much as Folklore was, or maybe things were already starting to dissolve with her and Joe's relationship at the time. Anyway just repatreonized and damn I got a lot to catch up on! 😂😉

Derick Mitchell Matthews

Wow what she says at 1:20:30.... that her biggest anxiety is that the artist that she loves will never like her.... because that is exactly what had happened with Kanye....... 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭

Hannah Walls-Scott

Tell me you live in warm climates and have never been scolded that you'll catch your death from cold weather. :D Bless

Jenny

Thank you for saying this. I’m glad I’m not the only one who was like, “Wait is that not a common expression everywhere?” Cuz I definitely remember hearing it a lot as a kid and using it a few times myself. So weird the expressions we use and never think about.

Christiana Somers

wait a second.... what if "Woodvale" IS THE BAND?!

Pauli

No but i reaally like selena gomez 🥹🥹

Ryan Chakra

Invisible String is fate putting them in the same room at the same time, Mastermind is planning out how to get him once she met him.

Tracy Peterson

Thank you! I only just worked that out and was coming back to say! I was so confused and thought “frightful Adam” was Owl City Adam. 😂

Annika

Yeah, Calvin Harris' real name is Adam

Isabel DaSilva

Who is frightful Adam? Did Taylor date someone named Adam?

Annika

It's funny you mentioned Bejeweled as being about ~frightful adam lol~ because I always thought it was more about Scott and feeling like he took her for granted even when she was still on his label, and then "reclaiming the land" with the rerecords

Isabel DaSilva

it’s offensive that the piano in the cardigan music video IS A FLOTATION DEVICE FOR HER

reese collins

I was there the night Selena came out on stage!! I died. And Troye Sivan came out that night too

Riley Bidwell

Your outfits are offensive! So pretty.❤️

Kim

We did get Bryan Adams as a special guest in Toronto Canada for Rep, so at least least one outside the US. Hoping she does have special guests on Eras but how with so much to cover!! And when are the international dates going to be announced?

D Langley

The invisible string line about the green/teal sorta reminds of the "we can keep the Christmas lights up til January" line since they both seem a bit off at first but I think that's why she did it. its in the mundane things just like when you look back you find all of the coincidences when you want them to be there even if they aren't

Jennifer

She sure did!!!! 😂😂😂😂

devin dear

cannot wait for your midnights breakdown!! 💙💙

TR

NOT BONNY CALLING US AMERICANS OUT😭😭

Ethan Nguyen

Snow On The Beach is Lana's top song on Spotify too.

so MUCH to sayyyyyyy

Chats & Reacts

Interesting that you did not get "catching my death" until now. This is a very common expression in the US; my mother and grandmother must have told me this hundreds of times as a kid: "Put your coat on, you'll catch your death" when I wanted to go outside in the cold without one. It is a an old-timey middle of the country type expression.

MarkH

Exactly what I was going to say! And then the second verse demonstrates how that string was pulling them closer i.e. him eating at her favourite place for dinner - they're not together yet but their string is closer. The fact that the two things she mentions in the first verse are so different is because they were at completely different points in their lives, but the string was still tying them together they just didn't quite know it yet! Perfect metaphor for a perfect song

Anna Kiff

I started writing a response to this, but it got so long I gave up! Suffice it to say, Zane Lowe is a great interviewer, and I loved the conversations between you that the interview provoked. Evermore is a great record, and its greatness will shine over time, even if Taylor ignores it. And let me remind you that with zero promotion, Coney Island is, two years later, the National's top song on Spotify, above their own recent release Weird Goodbyes with Bon Iver, and NBNC is Haim's most popular song on Spotify.

MarkH

I saw a comment that said the phone call came at 31:13 in the video!

Isabella Murray

It's so funny that so many people have made this mistake! I did too at first.

Joe Weaver

Lol I just started watching and I totally feel called out 😂🙆🙈. The first 9 months watching you ladies I totally thought you were from England. I think it wasn't until the Red vault breakdown that I realized it was Australia. I cannot tell you why. Maybe it's the feeling I'm getting a degree in Taylor by watching you and so it gives Oxford vibes in the best way???? Haha ❤️

Rissy (Taylor's Version)

The best way to think of folklore and evermore is as allegorical. Stories that as a whole are metaphors for real life. The emotions and character dynamics are from Taylor but they are otherwise mostly fictional stories (Long Story short, NBNC, other exceptions.) Midnights is a combination of the re-recording process and the ideas of folklore and evermore, story telling with past and present reflection. Truly iconic that everything she's been through has lead to Midnights somehow :)

Alison

perhaps an easter egg for the midnight track releases??

Maps

Thank you for continuing to make this kind of content. It makes me so happy to see how much this community has grown. I’m so grateful for the both of you 🥹 Please never stop creating ❤️

Lizzie Lou

My understanding of the concept of the invisible string isn't that they grew up doing similar things or had coincidences in adolescence that linked them together. It's more that they came from these different paths but those paths eventually led them to each other. I think of the first verse as her contemplating how she was sitting at the park while he was thousands of miles away working in a yogurt shop, and they had no idea that one day they'd end up together. I think about that all the time with my partner. Like, I wonder what he was doing at the exact moment that this thing happened to me all those years ago? lol

Marissa Royer

I'm so jealous (but also happy for you!) that you got Eras tickets. The whole presales experience was a nightmare for my friend group, and, at the end of it, we still ended up ticketless. The silence on how/if they're going to move forward with general sale is pretty discouraging.

Laura R

evermore is the perfect connecting piece from folklore to midnights.

Courtney Miller

Side note, I didn't really know what Australian accent was like. I'm not native English speaker and we were thought American English at school so any other English speaking countries (or states) to me are all mixed up 🤷

Laila Duffy

OMG you've just created a new connection in my brain! I HAVE TO fathom this immediately!!!!

Laila Duffy

Midnights documentary???? We KNOW she was recording the making of that record, so maybe she’ll release it to us?

Maggie

“Catching my death” in evermore is a reference to an old-fashioned phrase the was once pretty common in the US, if not elsewhere. I believe my earliest exposure to it was probably in the Little House on the Prairie books, which were published in the 1930s, where a mother character would say to her child “come inside now, or you’ll catch your death of cold”, or something similar, back in the days when it was believed that exposure to extreme cold was a cause of illness.

Leijette Riopel

Emily complete side note your fringe looks SPECTACULAR in this video

Shannon Gilhooly

Speaking of Marjorie, actually the first thing that came to mind when I first listened to it was the picture of her that Taylor posted on Instagram a long time ago, where you could really appreciate the resemblance between them. So that leads me to think that She has thought and wondered many times of her grandmother, and I can imagine how hard it has been not having her around, even though she lost her when she was a teenager. Being the creation of this song the perfect time to express her feelings.

Andrea

over two hours of greatness !! <333

Nele

I’ve said this before but for me as a fan like Emily who has stanned since 2006, it’s just so refreshing to hear such long in depth discussions about Taylor Swift. I always feel like I’m taking the most wonderful elective lecture when I watch these 😝😍

Jenn Hamel

Happy New Year, Em & Bon 💎✨💫🌻 Loved the fathoming of the first 20 minutes (perfect breakfast companions!!) and it's so interesting to hear what the process of putting out Folklore and Evermore was for Taylor. We shouldn't forget these are two pandemic albums, where we were all confined at home with ourselves. I think at that point we all got sick of our own autobiographical stories and started wandering with our mind... Except, most of us didn't create Grammy-worthy albums in the process! haha But in the end, what I love about Taylor is the tension, the paradox between how much she loves sharing the deepest joys and pains of her life, and her privacy and extreme care of her personal life. It's often the contradictions that make stunning art!

Maria Carmen

Loved re watching this two years on with you guys - Happy New Year!!!! I love all of your patreon videos so much and I'm so excited for your forever growing success in the new year and what that will bring <3

Emma

Love ya work, lovelies. Happy New Year! Wishing that all your successes continue to multiply. Love listening and fathoming alongside you both. Evermore forever 🧡💛🤎

Cara M

It's so interesting to me that people don't consider loyalty or consider it to be a top quality to look for. I have always been a ride or die friend, and have always craved that kind of friend back (which I do have, just haven't always). So loyalty is something I always am thinking about. Even just the other day there was a situation at work, and I distinctly remember thinking to myself, 'wow, okay I know I can't count on you if my back is against the wall' when my coworkers and boss let me down and laughed over my trying to prevent something dangerous from happening at work (I have a crazy job). I think Taylor's focus on loyalty is why I connect to her music so much, because it is something that is present even in her early work. Best Day comes to mind where she says 'you were on my side, even when I was wrong'. I honestly think that the absence of her longing, surprise at finding and hurt in not having loyalty is the thing that has kept me loving her music for so long. It's why reputation means so much to me because it felt like she was expressing the exact feeling of betrayal that is both my worst experience and nightmare. I also am dying over you not knowing the meaning of the phrase catching death. It's a very old phrase that just means getting a cold or other illness because you have been exposed to the elements. I think it dates back to the 1800s or 1700s. It is very commonly used in the Midwest and South US when someone goes outside in the winter with wet hair, or without a coat. People (usually older people) will say where is your coat? you'll catch your death if you don't wear one- or whatever. But really they just mean if you are outside you are going to get sick because what you are wearing isn't warm enough etc. I'm not sure if the phrase is American in origin though, because I feel like I've heard it used when I lived in England.

CK

My thoughts on the invisible string lyric is that the use of “green” is to show their respective beginnings when they were innocent dreamers wanting to be a singer/actor. Then she ties it back in with “gold was the color of the grass when I showed you around Centennial Park” to show the passage of the time with the seasons but also how far they both came. I love her use of color as symbolism in this song because it ties into her past uses of color to describe relationships but it definitely has multiple meanings

Jacqueline Johnson

if you look at the time spam, Taylor's home phone rang at the 31:13 mark…

Brandon Yip

after listening to you for a solid 6 months i dont really hear/notice your accents anymore, like my brain just kinda reprogrammed to your voices now lol

Jaimie C

🙈🙈 I'm laughing so hard at Em with the invisible string lyric cause I get where you're coming from but also I don't think it's meant to be coincidental in that part 🙈 it's kinda like a "you were there and i was here, and isn't it pretty to think that even tho you were there and i was here and we didn't know anything about each other then, somehow someway we ended up where we are now, together and in love". But also mastermind exists soo 😬🙈🙈 maybe mastermind is her seizing the opportunity that fate presented in invisible string lol

Ileana Isabel

HAPPY NEW YEAR GIRLS! I can't believe we get to see TAYLOR this year! The conversation about Tolerate It made me fathom a lot. Now I'm relating Champagne Problems to Midnight Rain!
