FRIENDS 03X04 WATCH PARTY

Comments

SO, I'm non-binary and go by they/ them. But biologically I am male. And when I was a kid I played with dolls, watched the "girly" tv shows, and my mom would put me in a suit for church 5 minutes later I was wearing my sister's princess. Knowing who I am today looking back on that and a few other things, the closet really was made of glass.

Genuinely thought you were gonna say gin after soda water. Little disappointed it wasn't what you said 🤣 When they brought in the pink and blue for babies, originally the colours were the opposite boy babies were wrapped in pink cause it was bright and showy and brash and blue for girls cause it was considered a calmer colour or something like that, as far as I remember . I a country lad born in northern ireland in the 90s, (from a very conservative family), enjoyed just being outside with our animals and being in my imagination.I adored reading and liked mechanical building toys ( lego, meccano etc), loved science toys and books, i had a microscope, and a human anatomy doll with have removable organs. I liked chess and draughts ( checkers) , video games and loved playing scrabble with my great granny. I had an easel, that i spent a lot of time painting and sketching on. I would dance and, sing and act out scenes to my favourite movies all the time. My grandparents were never super strict about what I played with in terms of toys or activities. I even had twin baby dolls and a pram at a 3 or 4. It didn't really seem to be an issue. But I remember vividly, my cousin and i thought it a fun idea to dress up in 'girls' clothes that we found in a closet at my house. My granny caught us and got soo angry and yelled. I cant remember what she said, I just remember the feeling of tingling fear down my spine. So she was OK with me having 'girls toys and doing traditionally feminine activites. but the line was drawn at dressing in 'girls' clothing. Was very confusing. In my early 20s, I moved into my first apartment and had the freedom to start to truly discover myself ( i was positive that i was gay for a few years, then realised i was bisexual), I would have karaoke and dress up nights with my girl friends . I would put on their heels, wear a flowy swishy skirt, a bra or crop top, and attempt to dance and sing veeery drunkenly and veeerry wobbly( picture a baby deer but less graceful). Heels are bloody hard to balance in. Got good at it after a while tho 😉😁 Sorry I rambled on and on with that one. Also, I have Scots in my family and in friends families, so kilts are common at formal events and i couldnt agree more. men in kilts are definitely sexy af. Once developed a temporary crush on a friend cause of how he looked in a kilt 🤣

My brother and I grew up playing with each other's toys. Sometimes I'd play Hot Wheels with him or he'd play Barbies with me. Sometimes we would combine things and the Barbies would go on dates including traveling on a remote control car. Didn't make a difference either way, lol. I also played in the mud and ran around in the woods with the boys but would go home and put on a Disney princess movie or get my My Little Ponies out. I never understood the very strict rules on what girls or boys should play with or be allowed to enjoy. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm male, turning 22 next week and i grew up with a single mom (who by the way, LOVES friends) and i for sure played with dolls as well as hotwheels lol. I also had an Ariel doll, there was a button on her back which made her sing and tail light up, i still have her to this day. I did always like playing dolls and my little pony with my sisters but i also like playing games with my brothers. My mom called me while i was watching this and we got to talking about this exact thing for a bit.

i wish we could share pictures! I loved my Teddy Ruxpin and Grubby! I had a ton of Barbies and baby dolls but most of my childhood was spent outside in the woods around my neighborhood, reading, or at gymnastics. My little brother was/is obnoxious and i never wanted to play with his toys because I really just wanted him to leave me alone. He would also ruin my toys whenever he got his hands on them and my mom would never punish him for it.

I remember having Barbies and dolls ( well, I mostly remember cutting off their hair), but I'm not 100% sure about other toys. I just turned 27 about a week ago, so when I was growing up, technology was becoming more relevant. I want to say from around 8 + I was more focused on playing with my Nintendo DS and PlayStation and other things like that

Tiffany Torres

I played with Barbie's but also my brother's Action Man as well. And my Barbie's went missing often, my brother was playing with them. I had the full dream house and car etc, had it all. Also as a Scottish person....I concur, men in kilts are sexy AF 😜 Unless you're at a family wedding and they all do the Brave heart (flashing their arses) you really don't want to see your dad, brother, uncles etc flashing their pasty, white, hairy arses 😂 but if it's not family! Very sexy

Once again though, we have to give Friends and the creators of the show credit for all of the things that they brought to light in this series. Frankly, none of this was discussed in this manner in the early 90s, it just wasn’t. So while it might be very unclear now why these are actual issues or problems worth talking about, back then these were VERY controversial topics. Friends really shaped my childhood and I am so glad that I grew up watching this show because when these things came up in the early 2000s and beyond that, I didn’t think of them as an… “oh my God, what the hell is happening?” situation. It was a lot more normal for me because of Friends. You can’t name very many shows that had a lesbian marriage before Friends or raised topics like three parents raising a child, a little boy playing with Barbies, and all of these things that most shows would shy away from. So I understand you saying that you have no idea why there’s an issue with any of this and you don’t even think about it. However, there needs to be an acknowledgment that this was still the early 90s and what this show did was incredible. ❤️❤️

I also loved my Ariel doll that changed under water! I made an entire underwater themed grotto, with shells, glass beads and all the characters! I did have some my little pony - ( passed down from my brother) but that didn't really interest me. I loved anything I could play with other people- family or friends as my brother's both moved out while I was growing up so I was always happy to have company!

Lucy

I’m a girl, born in 2002 and when I was a little kid, I hated Barbie. I hated dolls, I played with little cars with my brother and I love it. And I played games on PC with him, like CS:GO and some other shooting games and car games, you know. And i also spent a lot of time outside, ate dirt like you and built. Today, I don’t like dress much, I prefer jeans and T-shirts. I hate heels, I love sneakers. And for me, that’s okay.

Tereza

I mainly played with Barbies, but occasionally cars or GI Joe type things. I was a very girly girl for the most part and one of my sisters as well, but my other sister was a tomboy and HATED wearing dresses. Everyone is just different and I agree, I don't see the problem or think it is a problem. But I know why everything linked to girls is viewed differently, why for instance girls can wear blue or pants but guys can't wear pink or dresses, and that's just good old-fashioned sexism, misogyny and homophobia. Anything relating to girls is considered "emasculating", "gay" or simply "bad". So when a boy wears or plays with something society has deemed is for girls, there is immediate worry about him being gay. Just a few years ago, Harry Styles wore a dress on the cover of Vogue and conservatives LOST THEIR SHIT. But he's always been someone who defies gender norms and his sexuality has been a matter of discussion since forever. And he's never wanted to explicitly say anything because he just wants it to be normalised to not give a crap about someone else's sexual orientation, or gender identity for that matter. It's so weird how the people claiming to not care are so obsessed with these things.
