Some time between when it was first coined and the 1980s it became a popular term for 2SLGBTQ+ people to let other 2SLGBTQ+ people know that you're 2SLGBTQ+ as well. Due to it being popular among 2SLGBTQ+ people Taylor faced some controversy from some sections of the 2SLGBTQ+ community (especially parts that are insistent that Taylor is bi/pan if not a closeted lesbian despite Taylor saying she's straight) accusing her of queerbaiting by using this term
